that's pretty good ... not too sure how many states can boast a surplus these days ... did he do it through tax cuts? ...
Many factors need to be ... factored in.
He raised sales tax by 1%, but counteracted it with property tax relief. Mine went from $1,500 to $100 ... I'm not kidding. My sister's were around $20. Since I do a majority of my shopping on Amazon, it was win/win for me.
He slashed the state payroll by like 15% when he entered (he busted the unions to achieve this ... for whatever reason it didn't cause the national stir that Walker achieved). But even with a 15% reduction, there has not been a noticeable difference in the services the state supplies.
Sadly enough, he is not running again ... which is good and bad because he has been in for two terms and that's what the limit should be. One of our state's congressman, Mike Pence will win in a landslide and he is a social conservative so the state will soon be in the hole again once focus is switched to focusing on dumb social issues. All of you liberals should learn of Mike Pence, because he could be a huge thorn in your side in six years.

OK... so then... this only would help people who own their homes... people with more money...
And since you spend all of your money on out-of state retailers... it hasn't really helped the state much. Maybe that's why the debt in the state has doubled? Seems business is making money but the people aren't any better off for the most part.
He slashed the state payroll by like 15% when he entered
Yeah. We know. By gutting unions and firing teachers and lowering educational standards in Texas. As if we needed any more uneducated Texans voting.

Prince of Dorkness ... Jason P is talking about indiana ...
Yeah, I pretty much derailed the thread
Sorry, I got involved in a sub issue and used a different state as reference since I'm not familiar with Texas.

Being from Indiana originally, it's no surprise at all that there wasn't hell raised when he busted up the unions. Indiana has historically been anti-union and any unionized private industry is minimal. There is also a heavy layer of apathy as well as being a very conservative population on top of this. Daniels cut the crap out of school budgets, and the only ones to scrape by are the ones in communities that give a crap and passed local tax measures to compensate.
Pence wont be a thorn in anyone's side on a national level because he's too conservative and rarely do trends in Indiana carry over to anywhere else.
When general revenue spending is examined by itself, you get a better idea of Perry's fiscal consevative record. General revenue spending (revenue from taxes and fees) has grown since Perry took office in 2000. It has however fallen over the last decade an average of .6% every two years once those numbers are adjusted for inflation and population growth (booming). Much of the rest of the budget is tied to federal law and the Texas Constitution. Federal funding has made up about 1/3 of the budget. Here he has less "control". He could just deny those funds i suppose as federal spending is out of hand. But there is still a balancing act because his taxpayers sent that money to Washington and they deserve to get it back and not go to other states. A conundrum for a fiscal conservative I'm sure. This federal spending can impede private sector growth for one and often prompts more state spending.
Perry is the only governor of Texas that has cut general revenue spending since WW2.
Perry has advocated for the Legislature to cap spending at the rate of population growth plus inflation.
Sure Texas is running at a deficit now. I get it. Perry has also been the gov during two recessions btw. Economic conditions often make ones record foggy until you look at the details. There is still a "rainy day fund" of an estimated $6 billion but that is questionable do to some obligations coming up in the new budget. BUT, it's still some extra cashish that has been "preserved". Apparently at the expense of education...
I think I like him. And his hair is awesome. Anyone remember the story about when he was jogging and a coyote was about to make lunch of his puppy? He pulled out his laser sighted pitsol and turned the coyote "into mulch". Perry said he will carry his .380 Ruger – loaded with hollow-point bullets – when jogging on trails because he is afraid of snakes. He'd also seen coyotes in the undeveloped area.
When one came out of the brush toward his daughter's Labrador retriever, Perry charged.
"Don't attack my dog or you might get shot ... if you're a coyote"
Ok, before you tell us any cutesy/unverifiable stories about what a bad-ass he is when there are no cameras to see it or fawn about his hair (seriously, girl... his hair?)...
Let's maybe address some of the things people have said about him?
I mean, you really got your butt handed to you in this thread a bunch of times and you're just ignoring it and pretending that so far all of your reasons to vote for him have been shot to pieces..
Let's talk about those first and then you can go on about how cool he is and how hot he is in a speedo?
I never had MY butt handed to me here. This isn't a fight and I am not ignoring anything.
for the record, I am a man.
Yeah, you kinda did.
And OK.. you're a man. Which makes the whole "he's got awesome hair" thing a bit... I mean... I'm gay, no judgements from me... forget I brought that up.

Perry also has one of the best jackets I have ever witnessed. Has those patches on the sleeves and everything. from a surfrider event I went to a few years back....

Love it.
Like I said, he's known as Governor Goodhair. And it's not a term of affection.
Oh yes, we all remember his story about shooting a coyote. Maybe you didn't know how widely he was ridiculed for it.
Like many Texans, I'm familiar with coyotes. As humans encroach on their habitats, they are seen more and more in urban areas. It's true that they are known to carry off small pets, usually cats. But they are stealthy hunters. They don't "charge," as Perry claimed. Yelling and waving will scare one off. Since there were no witnesses and he told the story some time after it supposedly took place few people believed it. Since he jogs in his neighborhood, if he actually killed the critter you'd hope he'd called animal control to pick up the body.
He also wouldn't have had much to worry about with snakes either, as long as he stayed on his jogging path. Like most wild animals, if you don't mess with them they won't bother you. I was taught this as a very small child when my family moved to a new subdivision in an undeveloped area. I've seen my share of copperheads, rattlers, and water moccasins without incident. Packing heat to protect yourself while jogging in a gated community is ludicrous. I'd find it more believable if he'd shot himself in the balls.
Calling animal control to retrieve a dead coyote in the woods is not reasonable.
I believe Perry called it mulch.
You want a body for proof huh?
Reread what I posted.
He wasn't in the woods. He jogs in his neighborhood. A rather pricey gated community in Austin. Yes, you are expected to call animal control to pick up dead animals. They don't turn into "mulch" in a park or residential area. I don't recall him using that expression about it anyway. He said he "sent it where coyotes go."
I don't need a body or lack of one for proof. The whole story just reeks of bullshit.

Amazing how killing something makes someone cool in some eyes. Makes him even a bigger douche in mine.
Talking to reporters about the prospect of a race, Perry mentioned the role played in his decision by his wife, Anita. Citing her background as a nurse whose father was "an old country doctor," Perry said she's particularly concerned about the consequences of federal health care reform. He also referred to their children, saying federal debt is "on their backs."
"My wife was talking to me and saying, 'Listen, get out of your comfort zone. Yeah, being governor of Texas is a great job, but sometimes you're called to step into the fray.' "
As most of you know, since I wont' shut up about it, I work in porn.
But I don't talk about which studio I work for since most of you won't have heard of it and the few who have will be more vocal about how "I have no idea... I don't watch porn... nope.. not me..."
But the studio I work for is located on a rather large ranch about half an hour's drive north east of the city.
Not too long ago I was leaving the office late. I was in my MX5 with the top down, driving down the rather long drive way that leads away from the gates.
As I rounded the corner, I slowed to a crawl since the road is very loose gravel and I didn't wanna spin out. I came along side not one... not two... not three but FIVE coyotes. They're about the size of a larger German Shepherd. But a bit meaner-looking. Just a bit.
They looked at me, stayed still for a bit and stared. I was about 5 feet from them... in a convertible with the top down... They got a bit spooked and trotted away.
The idea of a coyote charging a dog near a human is absurd.
I don't just call "bullshit..." I say "he's lying. Because he's a liar. He made that up. It didn't happen."
And that is the kind of leadership we can expect from the kind of guy who's so scared of snakes (that can also be scared away with stomping of feet and yelling) that he needs a laser-aimed hand gun to go jogging.
I don't like to use the word "wussy." But if the shoe fits....

Which consequences is she worried about, by the way?
That she'll have to treat people even if they're not rich?
That she'll have to like... touch people with below-averge incomes?
That people will live longer?
Or wait... no... children won't have to wait until their conditions are untreatable to get any care?
Wow, what a humanitarian she is. And I love that protective head gear she's wearing.
