This is a comment I heard directed at me at a recent Social Distortion show. The irony of this is that I am 8 years older than Mike Ness; the kid making the comment was at least 30 years younger than Mike. The older I get, the more I run into this sort of “ageism” at shows. Getting older does not diminish my love of music, it actually makes it grow as there are more and more bands to hear and appreciate. So, when you see a little “old” lady at PJ20, remember that I love PJ as much as you do. By the way, 9/4 will be the 47th anniversary of my first concert, the Beatles. I’ve also had the pleasure of seeing Jimi Hendrix, Cream, The Who, The Doors, and Led Zeppelin, to name a few. Age does have its rewards. So, if I live through another Lollapalooza, I hope I am able to meet some of you and to celebrate my all-time favorite band with you all.

I really wish I could have seen Cream live like you have. The guitar work and Ginger Baker on drums....ooomphh! :D

Had just turned 12 when I bought Cream's Disraeli Gears album for a friends birthday present in 1968, would've loved to have seen them live - guess their farewell concert'll do though. Great music.

Age shall not weary true music lovers. 55 going on 23

Saw a guy who looked about 70 at the last Sydney PJ concert, he was rockingly healthy looking too!!!

I'm the 'average aged PJ fan'...but I look 'about' 10 years younger then my real age...so at concerts, I don't get lip from the 'whippersnappers'...but I do get looked 'down upon' at some concerts the 'you're too young to even know/appreciate this band' from some people my age. I just can't win!

Wow.. pretty damn good line up. September happens to be my 22nd anniversary since seeing my first concert. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers with the Replacements on the Full Moon Fever Tour (Bristol Lake Compounce). Not as good as a first show as you, but still pretty good. The Replacements rocked it that night and then to me Tom Petty was awesome too.

We went to a concert on Saturday night that was about half and half. It was interesting not to feel outnumbered by very young people! :D

There were a lot of people like us who came with their teenage kids too. ;)

Born in 59  ! I'm on a + ten year bonus plan & counting ;) . My father use to work security (he called it "bouncing" then  ) for Cream, Hendrix, Sly, & a few others when they were in NY 8-) . Got into great music early on ! Would have been f**kn incredible to see Cream, Hendrix & The Doors, I'm soooooo f**kn jealous. Wish I could remember more of the MSG Zeppelin show in 77 but I was with some of my HS graduating class & was " overserved " ........................

I'll stop going to concerts when I'm deaf !

It took PJ in 91 to remind me of the great rock bands of the 60s & 70s. They've been my favorite band ever since  .

See you in Alpine Valley 8-) !
So, What you Giving ?........ (Thanks Speedy, Alesek, & Arq+friends)

These are my top 5: PJ 2003 at Alpine Valley, Led Zeppelin (Chicago) 1969, The Who (Chicago) 1970, Tool (Summerfest) 2007, PJ Alpine Valley 2000. There were a lot of really great shows but these are my most memorable. I still have my ticket stub from the Who show...$4.50!!!

Maybe 2 yrs ago, when we were walking back to our car in a crowd after a huge concert, a guy about 21 got near my husband and tried to be friendly to him. After he spoke to my husband, he made an age related cut :( It was dumb b/c it was not a new band, they've been around a while. He practically called my husband old to his face from 5 ft away! Maybe since the whippersnapper was so ignorant, he did not know that STP are not new?
I'm 51, btw. And Bad Company was one of my favorite bands in the 70's when I had feathered hair ;)
And I believe the beginning of my hearing loss is Peter Frampton's fault. I was in the sixth row (not orchestra pit) at Merriweather in 1982. What a way to lose your hearing :)

I love hearing oldster's stories of shows before my time. I bet you are the only one here who will know of this singer I met in 1991 -- Gary Puckett. Although you may not since he sang mush, but I still like him, lol.

My first pj show was on the lawn at Merriweather in columbia in 1998. I saw a white haired lady knitting, sitting on the lawn alone! She had to be 70 and I thought that she went to some good shows in her life.

Us "oldsters" must be somewhat cool, otherwise the second generation of Pearl Jam in my household wouldn't be equally as excited as me to join me at PJ20...which will be my 15th anniversary of my first Pearl Jam show (Toledo-Savage Hall) Too embarrassed to tell you my first-ever concert, but it'll be the 20th anniv of that show.

Hey SD - PLEASE let's make it a point to meet during PJ20! My 9 year-old son's favorite band is The Who, and Uncle Pete is his Rock God. He'll die to hear you talk about seeing The Who in '70 for $4.50...he'll try offering you $5 for your ticket stub I'll bet! He and my 11 year-old saw their first concert last summer...Pearl Jam in Columbus.

I'm guessing late teens. I was torn between pointing out the age of the member of SD and telling him to f/off instead I just walked away.

Or you could say, 'too bad you'll never get to see Led Zeppelin, The Doors, or Hendrix, like I have'. If he really loves music, his jaw will drop and he will bow down to you.

That's one of my favorite things about PJ shows, the age range. At my first show in 2003 I sat next to a couple whose teenagers were also in the audience (much worse seats!).

at my first pj show in 1998, I was around alot of people that looked 18-25.
since this is the oldsters' thread, are you guys on blood pressure meds? My cardiologist (only had 1 visit to her) tried to put me on them and I refused. My bp must be high as I don't listen to pj like I used to...or I may have sleep apnea.

Is the OP going to tell us her age?

    Love this post....

Great thing about growing old with PJ is seeing the new generations attending and enjoying a band we have appreciated for so many years. I love the diversity in PJ fans.

See you at PJ20!!! Can't wait!!!

Makes me smile when people comment about the shows seen by folks our age. I too am an inveterate music lover who saw the original Allman Bros, the Who, Led Zeppelin, Stones, and did a DEAD tour summer of 78. First saw PJ In Oct 91 and pj20 would be my 55th show. Got shut out but am hoping to hook up a 10c ticket before Sept. Nice to see so many fans my age here. My son began attending shows with me several yes ago and has already seen them 12 times at some great shows; final Spectrum shows, MSG 10, Cleveland, DC 08. He loves them as much as I do so it is twice as much fun :D
