I saw a photo earlier; it had not been verified as authentic, but photos already are on-line. Disclaimer, as I am not someone who goes around looking for such evidence: Andrew Sullivan posted a link to the photo early this morning as part of his coverage, without warning/explanation of what the link contained.

I saw this one out there, I don't think it was photoshopped at all

I agree with you about his iconic status.

The only difference between those guys and bin Laden is, bin Laden had the unique ability to rally people around his cause and create a global following. When people join al Qaeda they pledge personal oaths of loyalty to bin Laden. He was charismatic. He had skins on the wall. The image he built for himself as defender of Islam against Soviet aggression in the 80s and against the US in the 2000s was a point of inspiration amongst his followers and that will not be easy to replicate.

Terrorism existed long before bin Laden and will exist long after, but this man put a face on it. He changed "normal" for everyone around the world. Those guys you listed are dangerous men to be sure. And there are many more just like them. But they are small potatoes compared to bin Laden. I think it will be very difficult for someone else to just step in and take his place.

All that said, congrats and thanks to the US troops and intelligence community that made this happen. And a prayer for the victims of 9/11 and all who have suffered as a result over the years.

I like when people speak for Ed who don't know a fucking thing about him. It's refreshing to know so much about a man I admire through the thoughts of what others perception of him to be. It's more important to me. It's great that they caught Bin Laden....but it's not like I was doing cartwheels over it like I would over a PJ20 announcement.

Not really, he was concerned with flying to the U.S.

It's understandable. I had a trip to the U.S booked for late November, then 9/11 happened, so I postponed my trip til the following year, not knowing what this would bring and mean for the following months. And this was one of the 1st things I discussed with my wife/then girlfriend who was going to the U.S with me. There was a lot of uncertainty.

Maybe not so much now, but this still raises conserns and the Australian government has issued travel warnings here in the hours following the news, as there is a now increased chance of terrorist attacks.

and so many people i talk and see,they feel the same feeling..and you know what..how many of us,didnt feel fear,or weird,or strange,or unsafe when u saw an dark guy look muslim at the same flight with yours???
