I think they did and I think there was a lot of vote splitting. I agree we can also partially thank Dalton Mcguinty for making Ontario go so conservative.

I'm guessing that's why there weren't too many campaign promises. I really hope he doesn't go through with buying those planes.

Look at the bright side...the bloc has been almost wiped out of Quebec. That's what I'll find interesting...will they rebuild? fold the party? what will they do?

I am so surprised that the Liberals got creamed so bad...wow and wow. I thought it would be bad...not this bad.

The greens got themselves a seat.

Harper got his majority...no surprise...he was polling in and out of majority territory throughout the campaign.

One election down...onto the Ontario campaigning that will start soon enough.

  • Well, thanks for being such good sports about this. Reasonable folks like you are why I try to ignore politics as much as I can. Hope we can revisit this thread in 4 years. You can start preparing apology posts now to all of us that you offended with your ill-informed & inflammatory comments. Take your time. Enlightenment can be a long process…

You are right, my comments were out of line. I will take responsibly for that. I should have said nothing about any party. To be fair though, I am sure you wouldn't have been happy if the Tories didn't win, and probably would not have posted your comment. Just a thought.

However, now that the Tories are majority, I hope you are right, and Harper proves us wrong, and makes Canada the stellar country it used to be. I will keep an open mind.

Terrible example. There's no political context. No political party is asking you to go it alone. If anything, the Conservatives are the ones working together. We would be happy if everyone would work with us, it would make the island so much stronger, but we're not going to force you to participate, and we're also not going to give you what we gather, just because you're on the island with us. So stop crying, cut that thing into a halter-top and start shammying down my coconut-tree yacht!

uhhh ... that's what an analogy is about ... :?

do you work for the conservative party?? ... it would appear so as you stick to talking points that sound like the conservative script ... no foundation ... just the same old points that have no foundation ...

in any case ... sadly - a congratulations is in order i fear as the vote-split and the undemocratic voting system will give your party the majority it so wants ...

So how is the system undemocratic? It's the same system we've been using for as long as I can remember.

For those that are unhappy with the election...

remember this...the liberals have governed the country for 69 years in the 20th century alone.

how were the NDP to ever advance their policies if they remained 3rd party.

traditionally in Canada the official opposition is suppose to be a government in waiting.

Jack Layton is happy...and very happy with our democracy.

I think it was unreasonable to expect him to win and form government, now the spotlight is on Layton and the NDP...especially in Quebec.

well apart from my comment about his eyes (completely factual! ) I said we'll see what he does.
What do you want us to say, anyways? "Yehaw!"
Even though he has a majority, most of the voters did not vote Conservative.

And besides, this is a political debate.. how did we really offend you?

it's undemocratic because it continues to give disproportional representation ... 54% of the seats on 40% of the vote ...

not many other countries use this

unless the conservatives reform the voting process (which they clearly will not because it favours them), i suspect that will be the only way a change of course will happen ... it's pretty obvious that scandal, corruption and values of democracy are not relevant to their base supporters ...

I doubt you'll ever see proportional representation...in Ontario if was referendum question which went down to defeat...

If I recall it was the reverse during JC 3 majorities...after I posted that an Analyst on the news didn't see a merger happening...he figure the liberals would rebuild with a new younger party leader, Justin Trudeau's name has come up as a leadership candidate.

If they merge then we'll have a 2 party system which so many people hate...

I was laughing my ass off when I saw Dion won his seat...I'm thinking dude you were the party...you were dumped...I don't think I've ever seen a party leader stick around after being dumped by his party...
