Pendulum opens, sounding really good here. Jeff's bass is sublime. Wash is fantastic, a really good performance. Ed's vocals shine again on Low Light but I really don't like the sound coming from Stone's guitar here. The guys fire through Why Go before busting out All Night for the only time on the tour. Ed's vocals are a tad squeaky on Mind Your Manners. Even Flow completes a blistering opening 7 songs. If this sets the tone of the show, this will be some boot!! After Even Flow, Ed plays and sings an improv before they go into Lightning Bolt. 1/2 Full is immense, absolutely full of energy. Mike just absolutely owns it. I'd say one of my favourite 1/2 Full's in recent years. The next 2 songs are played for the first time on the tour - Garden and Alone; the latter for the first time in 2014. Both are impressive performances. Ed doesn't do the talking bit at the end of Alone; instead he launches into Wishlist, which surprisingly is played for the first time on this tour. Ed fumbles some lyrics but it doesn't affect the performance. Let The Records Play (Ed briefly sings in an Elvis-style) and Spin The Black Circle are dedicated to a couple of record stores. Black is perfect to follow in the late part of the main set. Rearviewmirror closes out an epic main set.

An excellent Nothing As It Seems opens the first encore backed by an emotional Come Back dedicated to Ikey Owens. Breath makes a welcome return to a set for the first time since Seattle '13 and is in good form. Another super Porch closes the encore.

The second encore starts with Once. Boom is crazy good on Crazy Mary. The rest of the encore is standard stuff - Betterman, Alive, Rockin' In The Free World and Yellow Ledbetter - and no surprises but nonetheless still full of quality.

Great boot, I think it might just nudge past Lincoln as my favourite boot of the US 2014 so far.

It's so nice to hear Release open a show. It's just right. Some things are meant to be and one of those things is Release opening. Here it sounds fantastic - maybe because it doesn't happen all that often in the last 2 years. Though it does seem to end slightly early. Oceans follows but I have to be honest and say this song doesn't grab me too much. Nothingman is the last of low tempo opening trilogy. Go starts the high tempo section off. As Ed's vocals come into Mind Your Manners, it's played way too fast for him to keep him. Overall, they play this too fast - as if they are in a rush to finish it. There's a few mistakes, making it the worst play of the song so far this tour. They then tease 20 seconds of "I Wanna Be Your Dog" before going into Corduroy. It's not the smoothest transition or flow but I'd really like them to cover that song in full. What they did play sounded cool. Following Even Flow, Ed talks about "the great Jack White" and his band lost a member in Ikey Owens in the last few days; Light Years is played in dedication. It's a really energetic version of Light Years. Got Some, Dissident and Black Red Yellow isn't the greatest set flow you'll ever see but BRY is without doubt the highlight here. Really groovy and an extended instrumental section too for it's first appearance in 4 years. The classic combo of Lukin/Not For You is back. I always love those songs together. After Once, Ed sees a sign saying how many days it's been since they played Get Right. He talks about it a little but says they can't remember it so that's why they don't play it! They close the main set with Rearviewmirror.

Man Of The Hour opens the first encore with Imagine to follow. Comatose and State Of Love And Trust provide some energy to the encore, though I didn't feel SOLAT felt as strong as usual. It's left to Betterman (surprisingly not Porch) to close the encore.

Evolution kicks off the second encore. Following the Wasted Reprise/Life Wasted segment, the guys toy with the intro to Kiss' "Detroit Rock City" ahead of Spin The Black Circle. After Alive, it's 2 covers in the form of Kick Out The Jams and then Baba O'Riley. For the first time in 4 shows, Yellow Ledbetter doesn't close; it's the turn of Indifference. Unfortunately Ed forgets lyrics in the first 2 verses.

A boot that opens with Release and closes with Indifference has to be awesome, right? I don't know what happened but somewhere in the main set this didn't connect with me and continued through the encores. It wasn't bad by any means I must stress that, I just enjoyed other boots from this tour more. Highlights though were Release, that I Wanna Be Your Dog tease, Light Years and Black Red Yellow.

Just started a chronological listen-through of all the shows I've got (24 at the moment). Started with Toronto 10-30-1991 (I was there, BIG thanks to whoever recorded it!), just finished Munich 03-13-1992 (complete performance of Ten), Toronto 04-04-1992 is up next.

Moline '14 (The 'No Code' Show)

When Pearl Jam took to the stage and opened with Small Town, I wonder how many people were a little disappointed?! It's probably my least favourite opener but it's nice here. Sometimes sounds fantastic; I prefer it to the one played in Lincoln. Ed mistimes the start of the "Sometimes realize, I could be only as good you'll let me" verse but that's the only real negative on Hail Hail. Then it's Who You Are and I wonder if people then started thinking "are they playing No Code in full"! Ed starts talking during the intro for WYA. 5 times this was played in 2014 and I was lucky enough to see it 3 times; it's not my favourite version out of the 5 and feels a little lacklustre. I think this is because of the intro being extended due to Ed talking over the intro. I have so much love for In My Tree, it's just awesome. After In My Tree, Ed tells the crowd "we're gonna do something a little different tonight". Smile sounds good and also nice to hear it early on rather than late in a set. Stone's guitar sounds wonderful early in Off He Goes. Ed fumbles a couple of lyrics. Afterwards, Ed announces "end of side 1" and they fly into Habit, which gets only it's second performance of 2014. It sounds very raw. Red Mosquito is fantastic. "Slow Lukin" is teased with the intro but then they launch into 'normal' Lukin, Ed at one point near the end catching breath. Present Tense is just wow. Mankind is aborted after Mike's guitar is waaayyyy out of tune. Ed reintroduces Stone to a huge pop from the crowd and then they start Mankind over. Stone's vocals are a little on the quiet side it must be said. Around The Bend starts off sounding good but then Matt seems to be off-time. Overall, it's an average play of the rarity.

With No Code complete, normal service resumes and Given To Fly is up. Ed addresses the crowd but is kind of rambling I felt. They start back up with Interstellar Overdrive and Corduroy. Ed sings parts of 'Norwegian Wood' before Brain of J starts but it's all abit messy in truth. It seems Mike just ignores what Ed is doing and starts up and Ed tries to continue singing it regardless. Brain Of J itself is fantastic though. Before Infallible, there's some more messing going on. It just sounds clumsy before they start Infallible and is a bit tiresome to be honest. There really has been little flow since the No Code section finished. Ed's story about Around The Bend is cool. Gone is unearthed for the first time in 5 years as a request. Gone and Garden sound brilliant together, both very good performances. A crazy main set is brought to an end by another insane Porch - I absolutely love how they've developed the instrumental section even more over the last year.

In Hiding starts a good sequence right through to the end of the first encore - Lightning Bolt, Do The Evolution Jeremy and Why Go.

The second encore kicks off with Mike playing Eruption before the band go into Alive. The show is brought to an end with Fuckin' Up and Yellow Ledbetter. At the end, Ed remembers some dedications he forgot to mention so lists them all out.

This is one of those boots were performance and flow go out the window. Is there better performances of No Code songs out there? For sure. Some here are average at best. Would it make it into my favourite boots? Probably not. But it's still a must-listen boot because this band play an album in it's entirety and that rarely happens.

I thought it also thought the entire boot sounded "weird" but that was probably just the acoustics of the venue.
I will have to give it another listen to be sure.

Forgot about MTV Unplugged before moving on to April 4 1992 (Toronto). Funny thing about those 2 shows is MTV was recorded on my dad's birthday, then they played here on mine.

Something funny I noticed about the April 4 show: it was at the same venue I'd seen them open for the Chilis a few months earlier. At one point of the Chilis set I'd felt the need to step outside to escape the heat inside. Then, early in the April show, Eddie makes a comment about if you're too hot you can always step outside. Did I unknowingly have a run-in with one of the band members when I stepped outside at the October show, lol? I do maybe vaguely remember a brief conversation to that effect with someone, lol.

Now on to Toronto August 18 1993.

Just got through San Francisco June 24 1995 when Neil Young fills in for seriously ill Ed.

Next up is Soldier Field Chicago, July 11 1995. Apparently I'm in for a treat, never having heard this show before.

A solid Pendulum opens the show, it feels really laid-back. My favourite from the tour definitely. Release and Nothingman are out of this world. As it has been for most of it's appearances this tour, Go is back in the #4 spot. Ed's vocals are very strained throughout it must be said. Life Wasted is back without Wasted Reprise and that's something I like. Corduroy and Lightning Bolt are par for the course. Mind Your Manners sounds great and Save You off the back of it is nice. Even Flow rounds off a good sequence. Love Boat Captain is outstanding. They've totally revitalised the song, it's just a shame it was only played 3 times on the tour. After Daughter, I Got Shit makes it's only appearance of the tour. After The Fixer, Ed talks about a visit to the University Of Minnesota with Dr Tolar who is doing stem cell research on EB. They bring him onstage and give him a tour of the stage & band members. Dr Tolar also gives a short speech. Overall it's a long segment but totally worthwhile. The show resumes with Unthought Known. Rearviewmirror closes the main set.

Small Town starts off the first encore. Thin Air is lovely and to have Footsteps follow is just great. The covers of Imagine and Last Kiss are respectable enough. Why Go fires the tempo for the first time in the encore. Porch closes the encore. I thought after the first 3 songs of that encore it was going to be really good but it kinda fizzled out.

The second encore begins with Black. Stone starts up with Alive but then realises they aren't supposed to play it yet! Ed jests with Stone and says he wanted to go Into The Wild which brings out Setting Forth. Ed's vocals aren't that strong on this one. Surprisingly Ed takes the first verse on Betterman but then does give the crowd the second verse. Then it's the turn of Alive! Indifference is always a wonderful closer.

A good show, would make it in my middle bracket of boots this tour.
