    ACL I '14

No Pendulum to open, which is kinda nice. It's a very laid back Long Road that opens the first of two ACL shows for the band. It's a decent version with Boom's keys prominent early on. Following Long Road, the guys don't hold back ripping through Go, Why Go and Evolution. Ed addresses the crowd after Save You. Corduroy and Lightning Bolt combine to good effect, the former particularly strong. The reworked Love Boat Captain is given another play, the extended intro really is cool. My Father's Son is superb, probably the best I've heard it on a boot yet. Got Some sounds very good. Danny Clinch joins the band on harmonica for Red Mosquito. It makes for a good version. There's an extended outro to Daughter but not really any kind of tag though Ed briefly does Atomic Dog. Instead he talks to the crowd about "shitty fathers & breaking the cycle". Rearviewmirror closes the main set.

After a lengthy chat by Ed, the encore begins with Small Town. Imagine & Come Back make for a low-key, subdued start to the encore but Mike's solo in Come Back is tremendous. It just totally lifts the song. It's high tempo now with State Of Love And Trust and Lukin. Porch, Alive and Rockin' In The Free World close out the show.

The first 12/13 songs I thought was magnificent, great flow and sounded excellent. But after that I just felt it was too choppy and no real flow for the remainder of the main set and then following through the encore.

    Tulsa '14

After skipping ACL, Pendulum returns as show opener. Hard To Imagine is played for the only time on the tour and just grows and grows. Superb performance of the rarity. Stone's guitar and Ed sound out of tune/time early on in Small Town. It leads to the intro being really stripped back and quite a pleasant change in a way. After Small Town, Ed asks the crowd "is everybody good? Let's do this" and they launch into Breakerfall (for also the only time on this tour). Last Exit and Animal follow but they seem to lack a bit of punch on the boot to me. Jeff's bass sounds great on In My Tree. A few songs later, Marker In The Sand appears for only the second time since 2011 (both appearances in 2014 no less). It's a bit of a rusty performance I think but not surprising given how little it is played. Sirens here is one of the better performances of the song I've heard on a boot. Matt's cymbals are way too high in the mix I feel on Jeremy. All I can hear is his cymbals. Ed talks to the crowd and teases that they will play Dirty Frank. He goes on to talk about an event in Tulsa called Vinyl Fest and it's no surprise the next two songs Let The Records Play and Spin The Black Circle. Rearviewmirror predictably closes the main set.

Just Breathe opens the first encore. Black is next; perfection as always. Ed's vocals towards the end just make the hairs on your neck stand up. Goosebump moments. The covers of Crazy Mary and I Believe In Miracles follow (both making their first appearances since Berlin). On Crazy Mary, Mike's and Boom's soloing duel is excellent. Blood transitions into Porch seamlessly, the instrumental superb again with Mike absolutely letting loose and Stone grooving with that riff.

Evolution kicks off the second encore. Ed gives the crowd the first verse on Betterman. Ed brings up a kid onstage for Baba O'Riley. It's his birthday. A lovely Indifference closes the show.

Enjoyed the encores here more, the main set just didn't connect too much with me.

Pendulum opens again; this is my favourite of the tour so far. Sometimes appears for the first time on the tour and sounds good. It feels a bit more laid-back on the guitars. You know the third song will be another slow one - that's the formula now - and Nothingman duly steps up. The double header and Go and Why Go blast away any cobwebs. Getaway makes it's only appearance of the tour; unfortunately it doesn't have that bite live that it does in the studio, which is a shame because it's a cracking song. Light Years sounds great, a very solid performance. On paper, you wouldn't think Light Years/Mind Your Manners/Sirens would work too much but it kinda does. The latter is a song I don't rate but it's a decent performance (for once!). The next 3 songs are all about Mike - Present Tense, Eruption and Even Flow. Unfortunately Eruption (as it often does) ruins the set flow that had been building. I'd rather do without it. I do love that Mike has been starting his Even Flow a little different this tour. Infallible is superb; it's a mystery why it's played so little. Evolution also starts great, a real good performance. Ed comes in too early at the start of God's Dice. It's another Binaural number to follow in the form of Insignificance. 1/2 Full makes a welcome addition to the set; first appearance since Phoenix nearly a year earlier. It's the heavyweights of Betterman and Porch to close an excellent main set. The Porch instrumental is outstanding again but listen from at the 4 minute mark - oh my, it goes to another level!!!

Ed starts the encore with The Beatles' "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away", played for the first time since Rotterdam '09. His story before starting the song is quite amusing. Imagine follows, with it being John Lennon's birthday (and mine ha ha). Small Town keeps the flow at a low tempo. Lightning Bolt is pushed back to a later slot and works well here, really lifting the vibe. It's quickly become an anthem. Jeremy is fantastic, better than in Tulsa I felt. Jeff's outro of Jeremy into Stone's intro of Black is superb. Ed actually tags Rearviewmirror in Black! Repeating "Saw things much clearer/Once you were in my Rearviewmirror". We then get a full performance Rearviewmirror - absolutely killing it during the instrumental - closing the first encore.

Ed introduces the band at the start of the second encore and kick off with Smile. The cover of Springsteen's "Open All Night" is excellent. My only complaint here is I'd have had it open the second encore and have Smile second. Alive and Rockin' In The Free World get the crowd going wild. Ed's mic breaks so he misses the first few lines of Yellow Ledbetter. The crowd try to help out and Ed apparently sings into his beer bottle. When he does get his mic back, there seems to be a renewed energy into the vocals and playing of the song. Needless to say, it's the last song of the show.

The main set was absolutely breathtaking. The encores were solid. Easily my favourite boot of the US 2014 tour so far.

    ACL II '14

Small Town starts off Pearl Jam's second ACL show. I wouldn't normally favour this as an opener but it works here. Interstellar Overdrive leads into Corduroy. It's an old-skool feel to the opening songs. Mind Your Manners is absolutely on fire! After good performances of Given To Fly and Lightning Bolt, Immortality makes it's only appearance on the tour. It's outstanding. Severed Hand follows and it's also the only time it appears on a US 2014 setlist. It's a solid performance. During the Daughter outro (and it's a short one), Ed tags in Pink Floyd's Mother ever so briefly. Evolution sounds great til Ed loses his way singing the wrong part, he's still singing a verse as Jeff & Mike start the "Hallejuah" part. Fortunately, they just about keep it together. They've fucked this song up a lot worse in recent years. Ed then talks about ALS and introduces Steve Gleason. He then tells the crowd the next song is a request from Steve to his wife; You Are. It's a reasonable performance of the Riot Act rarity. It's always good to hear Down, though it is the final time it's played on this tour. Jeremy is superb again. Yellow Moon is next and it's a huge surprise to see this is the only time they played it on the tour. It sounds fantastic and with Black off the back of it, it's a good fit. The instrumental on Porch is insane again - Stone's mega riff starts it all off and then they go through the jam they played in Lincoln. Check it out round the 3.30 minute mark. Then at the 5 minute mark, Stone brings his mega riff back. Mind. Is. Blown. Porch closes the main set.

Betterman opens the encore and Alive is straight after, signalling this is going to be a short encore. That's pretty much confirmed as Alive has barely finished and the opening riffs of Baba O'Riley fire up. Ed introduces Yellow Ledbetter as " 'Love The Neighbours'. It's a lullaby". Mike throws in Star-Spangled Banner. It's the set closer.

I thought from Small Town to Immortality, it was a fantastic start but then kinda lost it's way mid-set. Yellow Moon and Black together was pretty awesome.

Denver 1 2006, a shorter set since they're opening for Petty but still a strong show. Good versions of Present Tense, Given To Fly and Bee Girl even makes an appearance. By far the highlight of the show is when Benmont Tench joins them for a great version of Corduroy, and one of the best performances of Black from the 2006 tour.
