Rumors have Daniel Bryan vs Dolph Ziggler at Wrestlemania XXI. That would be an aweesome match like Steamboat/Savage or Bret Hart/HBK. I think those examples are much more organic than what happens now. That's something that's not possible any more. People want what they want right now. No time to have an interesting build any more.
When Austin had his big face turn he was facing Bret Hart, who was trending strongly towards heel. People liked his attitude and and then he started doing face stuff. Maybe doing heelish stuff, but doing it for a face-y type result. Nobody blurred the edges of heel/face better than the Rock and Austin, but you could still break their careers down to the different heel/face periods.
The DX and NWO examples....there were big moments where the writing put the face turns in for some of the members and I remember them still getting mostly heel heat when they were doing heel stunts.
