I've never heard about any members of Pearl Jam going out and shooting innocent, defenseless animals for fun. James Hetfield on the other hand.......apparently will shoot anything that fucking moves.

Didn't PJ just sell their music (DTE) to a nature show where what you just described happens every episode?

Not to my knowledge. Also, I think if men are shooting at things, I would definitely not call that a nature show.

I would just like to know where you work that you are able to debate PJ vs Metallica in the company newsletter.

But yeah, you can't compare bands really. Especially these two. It's amazing how wrong some PJ fans are in their assessment of Metallica, as I'm sure some of their fans would be of PJ as well.

I work in the lab for a Biomedical company. Pretty much anything goes in our company newsletter : )

PJ is better overall, but, regarding the Napster issue? Wasn't it just Lars who instigated that whole thing with going to court and trial? I'm not complaining and trashing anyone band wise just curious. I thought their was some sort of heavy backlash towards Lars because of it, and he changed his story on the whole reason for why he took them to court. Just asking.

I like Pearl jam alot more, and I Just connect with their music more. That being said, Metallica is a Great band as well, and do put on a great live show.

They have started doing what PJ does and sell mp3's of their shows online. Yes, PJ has always done it freely, But Metallica Fans can enjoy the mp3's of their shows now.

I do think that is cool though that Metallica does Meet and greets. That is cool . Just curious what's the price/ process of getting those?

regarding the napster thing- this is hilarious:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=miIIgxXiyU8

Lars decided to be the face of the Napster fight and he paid dearly for it. He came across as a pretentious prick and as a result, the band suffered a lot of backlash and lost fans. I completely agree he went about it the wrong way but to those who think they are assholes for fighting Napster, do you think it's cool for me to download LOXL for free or any other album tracks? They stood up for what they believed in....how does that differ from fighting Ticketmaster (and essentially caving in and using them almost exclusively)?

The meet and greets go to 30 random fan club members at each show. You have to be a member but you don't have to pay to meet them.

The difference between PJ/Ticketmaster and Metallica/Napster is fan treatment. In PJ's case, Jeff and Stone testified before the U.S. senate to show that TM's monopoly raised prices for fans. PJ's efforts were geared toward helping its fans by reducing ticket prices. While Metallica/Lars had every right to protest Napster, Lars gave to a federal judge an entire book listing the names of his fans that illegally downloaded Metallica songs.

Sorry, but the similarity of "sticking up for what you believe in," doesn't cut it when you rat out your fans to a federal judge.

Yeah I think Lars went a little far with the whole "We want the names of people who downloaded our music" thing. But let's face it, he was right. I bet now every musician wishes they backed him. With the exception of Pearl Jam's stuff and The Beatles' stereo boxset, I've downloaded EVERYTHING for free over the past 10 years.

He was a bit abrasive and over the top with it but you act like a lawyer showed up at the houses of every person on that list. No one was actually sued. It was all posturing. I know they have since said that many artists privately supported them. Clearly most others were too cowardly to speak out in fear of backlash, similar to the Ticketmaster situation. I was pissed off at the time but realize now why they did what they did and support it. I supported Pearl Jam as well and it's a shame they have had to back off their stance and are now not only using TM but also charging a lot more for tickets.

Just b/c no one got sued doesn't mean they couldn't have been (easily) sued or had criminal charges filed against them. The fact remains that Lars knowingly subjected his fans to civil and criminal liability. PJ realized that their stance against TM actually hurt their fans, so they relented and toured with Ticketmaster... they needed to Yield to get back on the road (hence album cover). A more analagous comparison would actually be the exact opposite - ie - if Metallica went against what they believed in and didn't fight Napster (like PJ going against what they believed in and toured with TM) to benefit their fans in the end.

    That's pretty skewed view.

When did it become cool to go against your beliefs?

Much like here, don't you think their actual fans already owned the albums and weren't downloading them? PJ, Metallica and Radiohead are just about the only albums I will still buy because I am a huge fan of them. I have ZERO doubt that is Ed or Stone did what Lars did, you would think it was the best and most noble thing ever. And what band member told you the Yield cover was related to Ticketmaster and getting back on the road  That's a great one. Never heard that before. That explains everything! Now I totally get the high service charges and ticket prices.

And for the record, in order to circumvent the high service charges you ARE in fact allowed to lower the price of your own tickets to offset the charges. Not sure if they got that memo.

I would say the very best reason that PJ is so much better than Metallica is the fact that no one from Metallica is in PJ. I actaully used to like Metallica quite a bit until I realized what a bunch of clowns they all are.

    Shame.

I guess he would have preferred they act really weird on MTV Unplugged, unappreciative at the grammys and deliberately shunning fame and making people interviewing you extremely uncomfortable. I will say in typing that, it's crazy to see how much of a 180 Ed did in the best way possible. He wasn't much of a role model back in the day. Not that Metallica was either.

    1. Lots of actual fans illegally download just to hear albums early when they leak and then they buy it later once its out.

    2. Doesn't matter what you think I would find noble in a hypothetical scenario about Ed and Stone throwing their fans under the bus like Lars, b/c it didn't happen.

    3. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out the Yield cover.

    4. Yes, PJ can and should lower their ticket prices, and I agree that they are outrageous right now.

So why is he writing that dumb article?

Metal vs. Classic Rock and Roll

Because its for some company newsletter. I'm sure the pro-Metallica article is probably very biased as well. I think it is being written as kind of a fun thing. Its obviously opinion-based anyway, so what's the point in getting mad about it? Its not like he could objectively prove why one band is better than another.

As Kip Dynamite said, "Napoleon, like anyone could even know that..."

Thank you. I personally like both bands. This article is supposed to be fun/ not serious. Sometimes its OK to let loose/ get stupid at work. I'm not going to get upset every time someone craps on PJ. Is it a dumb article? ABSOLUTELY, thats the point!

So basically you are saying when it comes to giving fanclub members best seats at shows, in which Pearl Jam have been doing since as long as I can remember, Metallica, like many other bands followed Pearl jam's direction... i can live with that.

Ive seen Metallica twice and I must say Pearl jam ARE better live.

When it comes to my comment about how many albums they have released, I was basing it on how well reviewed each band is when it comes to albums. From when I read, Metallica and Pearl jam are equal in this department, with Pearl jam releasing more albums in a shorter amount of time. Pearl Jam have also never laid an egg like St. Anger.

Metallica might have a handful of good ballads, but Pearl jam have MANY, and some fairweathers only know PJ for their ballads.

With the way PJ tours, a fan could see them at least once a year, Metallica you have to wait... BUT for some fans you can see Metallica closer to home... I can live with this.

I would never call the Daves and Jack Irons core members of PJ... but James and Lars are probably THE core members of Metallica... I can agree here.

When I said "Metallilca makes music people want to hear" it seems it became apparent with St. Anger, it was a failed rebound from the Load sessions, when many of the core fans wanted a pre "Black" album... However, Death Magnetic... hit right on the mark.

My "self absorbed assholes" comment came from what I saw during "Some kind of Monster," i wasn't a fan of the "Load" albums so my Metallica fandom was slipping at this point, then seeing how they acted during this movie was a complete turn-off, and how Lars acted with the whole Napster thing.

Didn't mean to piss anyone off, just an opinion. If its any vindication I cranked Death Magnetic in my car today, its a good album.

Ive had this argument with my metal head friends on many occasions.

-Pearl Jam are better to their fans, giving fan club dibs on best seats at shows.
False. Not only does Metallica reserve all the best seats, you can pick your seats via-a ticketmaster presale. They also allow members in the building first

-Pearl Jam condones a majority of online music trading unlike Metallica who did all they could to take down Napster.
The Napster thing was 12 years ago and was a result of them being technologically naive and a bit cocky. A song they were working on (I Disappear) was uploaded to Napster which is what set them off. They absolutely went about it the wrong way but keep in mind, the band actually had a tapers section at all of their shows for years and long before PJ. They encouraged people to bootleg and trade their shows. Now, they stream the most recent concert for free in their app and they have free shows available from their vault.

-Pearl jam are more diverse, they can write as many good ballads as heavy rock songs.
Eh...not necessarily. See Mama Said, Hero of the Day, Fade to Black, Unforgiven. I would say Pearl Jam is more willing to do this but not better at it

-Pearl Jam are MUCH better live... Metallica live sounds like you popped in a CD with the same guitar solo's, harmonies, etc. However, Pearl Jam live, every track sounds different every show, never had the same set-list twice, and they play MANY more songs at a show compared to Metallica.
    I respectfully disagree 100%

-Metallica has released nine albums in 29 years, Pearl jam has released nine albums in 19 years... more critically acclaimed music in less time.
    LOL. What?

-Pearl Jam tours almost every year. Metallica always takes a couple years off after a tour.
True but Pearl Jam plays so few shows when they tour. Metallica goes all over the world

-Pearl Jam have never self imploded and lost any core members. Metallica, present day have only Lars and James left as original members.
Dave Krussen, Dave A., Jack Irons?

-Pearl Jam make the music they want to make, Metallica makes music they think people want to hear.
    Complete rubbish

-For a mere 10 bucks, you can download almost any show pearl jam has played and through some private fan sites any show before '08 are free (gremmie.net).
    Same for Metallica

-Last but most importantly, Pearl Jam aren't self absorbed assholes.
I think this is the only comment that pissed me off. Do me a favor....go to http://www.metontour.com and watch some videos. Watch them interact at every show with fans backstage and watch them take setlist requests. Enjoy a 10-15 minute video from every single show they play, for free for the fans. Then sign up for the Metclub and see how well they treat you compared to other fan clubs. Also notice that ticket prices have been the same since 2004. I have no doubt they were once self-absorbed assholes but they are far from it anymore.

I was joking about owning an M3 and I was making fun of car tough guys. I own the car in my avatar.

At first I thought you meant you've owned every generation M3. then I realize you meant "beat". What vette? C5, C6? My uncles had a bunch and my cousins are all muscle car guys, so i've heard enough talk about 'merican muscle that I can take in my life. ;)

    I'd really like an E30 or E46 M3.
