-Pearl Jam are better to their fans, giving fan club dibs on best seats at shows.
Metallica do meet & greets every single show-Pearl jam are more diverse, they can write as many good ballads as heavy rock songs.
Early Metallica songwriting was brilliant and something PJ have never come close to imo-Pearl Jam are MUCH better live... Metallica live sounds like you popped in a CD with the same guitar solo's, harmonies, etc. However, Pearl Jam live, every track sounds different every show, never had the same set-list twice, and they play MANY more songs at a show compared to Metallica.
Both awesome live but do agree that PJ mix it up more-Metallica has released nine albums in 29 years, Pearl jam has released nine albums in 19 years... more critically acclaimed music in less time.
Tough call given Metallica's first 4 albums were far from commercial albums, where as Ten was straight out rock album. Metallica still have biggest selling album of 2 bands (Black)-Pearl Jam tours almost every year. Metallica always takes a couple years off after a tour.
Metallica tour a lot of places PJ dont. I would say Metallica are bigger in more countries than PJ.-Pearl Jam have never self imploded and lost any core members. Metallica, present day have only Lars and James left as original members.
I would argue that James & Lars are the core members-Pearl Jam make the music they want to make, Metallica makes music they think people want to hear.
People wanted to hear St Anger???-For a mere 10 bucks, you can download almost any show pearl jam has played and through some private fan sites any show before '08 are free (gremmie.net).
You can also download Metallica shows a day or 2 after the show-Last but most importantly, Pearl Jam aren't self absorbed assholes.
I've met Metallica and they are very cool & down to earth. Yes Lars is eccentric but it is him who pushes the meet & greets before every show cause he actually does care about the fans.

The band I like is better than the band you like. My dad can beat up your dad.

Don't get me wrong, I love Metallica (seen them live a couple times). Read some of my old posts, I don't wear a big music authority badge. My boss and I don't hold arguing matches over whos better. This is all for fun in a company newsletter we have at work.

this is like comparing a hummer to a corvette

Both a great bands. When PJ goes through the shit for as long as Metallica has get back to me.

I love them both, and they both have a lot to offer fans musically and through there services associated with the band.

Just because Lars is a shmuck from time to time doesn't mean they suck, nor that the singer has been through rehab, as MICHAEL McCready has been to rehab- see mad season

get off Metallica's back and appreicate Pearl Jam.

Metallica has many many things that are better than PJ, and vise-versa
  • I like Metallica's albums for the most part and I totally agree that St. Anger stinks and is by far their worst album, but besides that we will have to agree to disagree.

    Feel Free.

Although in all honesty I agree with the others on here that to each his own. Metallica was and at times still is a great band who paved the way for tons of others to follow. I've met everyone in the band except for Lars and they were all very down to earth, nice guys. Their 1st 5 albums are incredible and it's too bad that they let Bob Rock come in and ruin everything. There is no such thing as "better" or "worse" when it comes to music, it's all personal preference.

    They don't sue their fans!!!!!!!!!!

False. Not only does Metallica reserve all the best seats, you can pick your seats via-a ticketmaster presale. They also allow members in the building first

-Pearl Jam condones a majority of online music trading unlike Metallica who did all they could to take down Napster.
The Napster thing was 12 years ago and was a result of them being technologically naive and a bit cocky. A song they were working on (I Disappear) was uploaded to Napster which is what set them off. They absolutely went about it the wrong way but keep in mind, the band actually had a tapers section at all of their shows for years and long before PJ. They encouraged people to bootleg and trade their shows. Now, they stream the most recent concert for free in their app and they have free shows available from their vault.

-Pearl jam are more diverse, they can write as many good ballads as heavy rock songs.
Eh...not necessarily. See Mama Said, Hero of the Day, Fade to Black, Unforgiven. I would say Pearl Jam is more willing to do this but not better at it

-Pearl Jam are MUCH better live... Metallica live sounds like you popped in a CD with the same guitar solo's, harmonies, etc. However, Pearl Jam live, every track sounds different every show, never had the same set-list twice, and they play MANY more songs at a show compared to Metallica.
    I respectfully disagree 100%

-Metallica has released nine albums in 29 years, Pearl jam has released nine albums in 19 years... more critically acclaimed music in less time.
    LOL. What?

-Pearl Jam tours almost every year. Metallica always takes a couple years off after a tour.
True but Pearl Jam plays so few shows when they tour. Metallica goes all over the world

-Pearl Jam have never self imploded and lost any core members. Metallica, present day have only Lars and James left as original members.
Dave Krussen, Dave A., Jack Irons?

-Pearl Jam make the music they want to make, Metallica makes music they think people want to hear.
    Complete rubbish

-For a mere 10 bucks, you can download almost any show pearl jam has played and through some private fan sites any show before '08 are free (gremmie.net).
    Same for Metallica

-Last but most importantly, Pearl Jam aren't self absorbed assholes.
I think this is the only comment that pissed me off. Do me a favor....go to http://www.metontour.com and watch some videos. Watch them interact at every show with fans backstage and watch them take setlist requests. Enjoy a 10-15 minute video from every single show they play, for free for the fans. Then sign up for the Metclub and see how well they treat you compared to other fan clubs. Also notice that ticket prices have been the same since 2004. I have no doubt they were once self-absorbed assholes but they are far from it anymore.

No it's foolish because Metallica has at least twice as many fans worldwide as PJ does and I'm sure a good portion of them are as obsessed with Metallica as people around here are obsessed with Pearl Jam

PJ is better overall, but, regarding the Napster issue? Wasn't it just Lars who instigated that whole thing with going to court and trial? I'm not complaining and trashing anyone band wise just curious. I thought their was some sort of heavy backlash towards Lars because of it, and he changed his story on the whole reason for why he took them to court. Just asking.

I like Pearl jam alot more, and I Just connect with their music more. That being said, Metallica is a Great band as well, and do put on a great live show.

They have started doing what PJ does and sell mp3's of their shows online. Yes, PJ has always done it freely, But Metallica Fans can enjoy the mp3's of their shows now.

I do think that is cool though that Metallica does Meet and greets. That is cool . Just curious what's the price/ process of getting those?

regarding the napster thing- these is hilarious:

  • A couple musings:

Metallica "borrows" Pearl Jam music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zt9Zpu98wqA

Pearl Jam brings the fire to shows with their music, Metallica brings it with pyrotechnics that incinerate the lead singer.

Vedder has shown more balls climbing dangerous shit and leaping from it than Hetfield has ever risked in anything.

Vedder's vocal capabilities are about 1000 times that of Hetfield's.

Pearl Jam likes one another without counselors being involved.

Vedder doesn't sound absolutely juvenile when addressing the audience and doesn't speak to the audience in third person.

Pearl Jam doesn't need to tell the city currently being played in 10,000 times that they love that city. I can't tell you how many times I heard, "Metallica loves you, Denver!"

Pearl Jam has never used trash can lids as percussion instruments like it sounds like Ulrich did on St. Anger. ;)

Now having said all that, I enjoy music and shows from both of them.

IMO....Death Magnetic blows Backspacer, Avocado, Riot Act and Binaural out of the water. And I liked Backspacer. Load does the same although I can't say the same about Reload.

Without watching I am assuming this is End of the Line's very Similar riff to Animal.

Pearl Jam brings the fire to shows with their music, Metallica brings it with pyrotechnics that incinerate the lead singer.
Both bands are great live with or without pyro. Metallica 93 was still hands down the best live show I have ever seen but PJ overall have been more consistent.

Vedder has shown more balls climbing dangerous shit and leaping from it than Hetfield has ever risked in anything.
Hey come on...you said it above - Hetfield stepped on pyro. How tough is that? Ha ha.

Vedder's vocal capabilities are about 1000 times that of Hetfield's.
True..but Hetfield's guitar skills are over 1000 times better than Ed's.

Pearl Jam likes one another without counselors being involved.
Don't think PJ members have always seen eye to eye but cant argue with the counselor part.

Vedder doesn't sound absolutely juvenile when addressing the audience and doesn't speak to the audience in third person.
True....That is one thing I dont like about James

Pearl Jam doesn't need to tell the city currently being played in 10,000 times that they love that city. I can't tell you how many times I heard, "Metallica loves you, Denver!"
    True again

Now having said all that, I enjoy music and shows from both of them.

    Me too...both amazing bands.

Lars decided to be the face of the Napster fight and he paid dearly for it. He came across as a pretentious prick and as a result, the band suffered a lot of backlash and lost fans. I completely agree he went about it the wrong way but to those who think they are assholes for fighting Napster, do you think it's cool for me to download LOXL for free or any other album tracks? They stood up for what they believed in....how does that differ from fighting Ticketmaster (and essentially caving in and using them almost exclusively)?

The meet and greets go to 30 random fan club members at each show. You have to be a member but you don't have to pay to meet them.
  • You've never seen Eddie on fire on stage have you? Silly Metallica.
