SO what I am hearing is that it hit the coast as a cat 5, and hit a low populated area.
There are no reports of fatalities or serious injuries at this stage Thank goodness
Banana crops in Innisvale have been destroyed which is terrible. They supply bananas to most of australia and even the world. The same crop was destroyed in 06 cyclone and bananas went up to about $20/kg.

Has anyone heard from Zig? I text her before & no reply. Maybe mobiles are down. Still no deaths that I've heard of which is something of course. I guess they're waking up about now to see how bad the damage is.
Just got a message from someone who has been texting Ziggy (Susan). Ziggy, her boyfriend and their two dogs spent the night at her parents house in another part of Townsville. I think they had some sort of bunker set up there. Apparently it was a very frightening night but they are all fine.

Poor Mission Beach copped it too. I remember going on holidays there many years ago and spent a whole day searching for the elusive Cassowary. We finally saw one at the end of the day in an enclosure at an Animal Sanctuary.

Oh I thought I'd posted this before but someone's posted on Zig's facebook that "although she had a TERRIBLE night, they're all fine". That's the latest that's on there, from a couple of hours ago so sounds like they've got through ok. Hope the damage isn't too horrendous. The small town where it hit has been absolutely flattened apparently.

Yes the Facebook message was from Kylie (ozsmalltowngirl) who kept in contact with Susan (Ziggy) thoughout most of the night via text messages. Apparently Townsville is without electricity today.
The cyclone directly hit the small towns of Tully and nearby Mission Beach. Lots of damage there.

Oh cool. I didn't get a reply to my text this morning NZtime so wasn't sure & when I saw the msg on fb this morning was 1st news I'd seen. Damage looks pretty intense on the news but amazing no lives lost that they know of. Hope it stays that way.

I was on holidays at the whitsundays and left 3 days before Larry hit in 06, the weather was putrid. I have never experienced humidity like it......... and no bananas will be purchased by me for the next 12 months or so till the aussie ones are back on the shelves (at decent prices).
As far as I know Townsville is still without electricity. But I saw on Facebook that she has been keeping in contact with people via text message.

i've had some texts and a couple of phone calls that went like this "hi" "hey!" "how are you?" "i'm good, you? hello? sus? hello??" rinse and repeat before we realised that perhaps the network is struggling. nice to hear her little aussie voice.
anyway, she's ok. i've just posted on her facebook wall that she's drinking beer and watching the army men cleaning up. possibly cat calling, i didn't ask. her house is ok and her dogs are ok, but her mum's house has some roof damage. they stuck to the one room while the storm was at it's strongest and i believe the words "shitting" and "pants" were used. she's got lots of photos to share and i'm sure will have some great stories to share once power is restored to townsville.

Thanks to everyone for your good thoughts and vibes! They worked. Townsville only got the edge of the monster category 5 cyclone....we probably got about a cat 2. I'm never going through a cat 3, 4 or 5. Two hours north of me is flattened. Fuck that! It was cyclonic for over 12 hours. The eye crossed at midnight on Wednesday and between midnight and 3am it got a bit crazy. The second half of a cyclone is always worse....and it was. Most cyclones only last 2 hours though. This one just dragged on and on and on.
I had about 2 minutes of terror when about 1am the ceiling started lifting from the pressure build up. I SHIT MY PANTS. I immediately jumped up and just stood there staring at the ceiling with my heart beating as fast as it could possibly beat....did I really see that? Then it moved up about an inch again and I'm frantically ringing my dad who was in a different part of the house, while putting my Docs on, while grabbing my bag and other shit, while screaming to Leigh "the CEILING is fucking MOVING UP -- get the DOGS!!!"....I've never moved so fast in my life! Then dad said their ceiling was doing it too and it was just from the build of up pressure....but I could tell he was concerned about it. That part was REALLY scary. I couldn't imagine having that feeling of fear like the people just two hours north had for hours and hours. I was listening to them ring the radio stations in the middle of the cyclone and they were all soooo scared!! Horrible to listen to at the time....but if you turned the radio off, the noise of the cyclone was too much....sounded like people screaming and howling and yucky sounds.
All in all, it wasn't too bad....we got out of it really well. If I hadn't seen the ceiling move, I would have been fine and not that scared. Can't wait to move to NZ....where I'll just have to deal with earthquakes! haha
Some photos:
Sunken trampoline -- about 2pm Wednesday -- started to build up and get windy
11am Thursday --- 11 hours after the eye crossed -- and still cyclonic winds
My bunker -- an office
We decided to go to mum and dad's (top middle house -- red roof, white walls, big white fence)...which is on a hill...facing the coast...and we had no wind buffer whatsoever! haha We got pretty hammered up there.
Ziggy waiting for the cyclone -- she loved watching it (while it wasn't too crazy and we could keep the door open)
All bunkered in with furniture blocking the sliding glass doors -- it got fucking HOT as soon as we closed them and I got sick for hours -- thought I was going to pass out -- the pressure was so great and no air at all....for HOURS. And I thought the glass doors were going to smash any second. And this was only a cat 2!
Solitaire -- with CARDS!!
Ceiling of my sister's apartment next door to mum and dad's caused by tiles flying off the roof
Massive trees fell over everywhere
Another tree
This tree just snapped in half right at the base
And another one -- for comparison, my bf is 6ft tall
Army helping with the clean up
Couple of hours drive north of me (not my photo) -- We were unbelievably lucky where Australia's biggest ever cyclone hit -- it could have easily been Townsville with 180,000 people instead of a couple of small towns with only a few thousand people.
I'm glad you're all safe. My thoughts were with you on that night.

oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.
Cyclone Yasi, Winds Stronger Than Katrina, Hits Australia Coast
February 02, 2011, 10:29 AM EST
By Robert Fenner
Feb. 3 (Bloomberg) -- Tropical Cyclone Yasi, packing winds stronger than those from Hurricane Katrina that devastated New Orleans, reached Australia’s coastline as residents in the northeastern cities of Cairns and Townsville filled evacuation shelters seeking refuge.
