I would have been happy with another standard Foo release and that's what I was honestly expecting. This thing is a complete surprise, not sure it's great by any means but they went way out of their comfort zone for the first time ever. Been through it about 5 times and it really doesn't sound like any of their previous albums. Makes me wonder what their catalog would have looked like had they tried something like this around say 2005 when they honestly ran out of new ideas. I loved Wasting Light and thought Sonic Highways was good but they were clearly content sticking with a certain forumula because it worked. Here we get a bunch of songs that minus Run, Sky and maybe Arrows would not fit on any other Foo record. For me the highlights are...

Sky Is a Neighborhood - More of traditional Foo song but still has a fresh feel to it.
La Dee Da - Total NIN vibe here, could easily see Trent belting this one out.
Arrows - My personal favorite so far.
On my first listen now.  Mixed thoughts.  Not sure if I like it or not but will defiantly give it a few more listens.

It starts strong, but kind of fades in the middle. Happy Ever After (Zero Hour) sucks. Dirty Water didn't do anything for me either.
I wish I was as fortunate, as fortunate as me.

I'm actually pleasantly surprised, considering I am a low end fan of their music. I'm 4 songs in and actually don't want to just turn it off yet. Like the different direction. Although, I feel like I hear a bit of Def Leppard sounds at times, especially in the chorus of The Sky is a Neighborhood. Maybe it's more that lyric of "banging on the ceiling".
    It's a hopeless situation...

  • I love the new album since the first listen. Way better than Sonic Highways. This one I'll spin many times! My expectations were low, but this album surprised me in every way.
  • Sonic Highways is drawing some hatred.

    I liked that album.

Through the first listen, and I think it's pretty good. A couple songs I don't like at all, a few I like and a few that I think are ok now, but might grow on me the more I hear them.

Digging "Dirty Water"... "La Dee Da" is good stuff as well.  "Run" and "The Line". These four definitely for sure. Gotta give the rest a few more plays...

Sometimes I think it's the way they layer Dave Grohl's vocals.   He's no Eddie Vedder or Chris Cornell but he's not horrible or anything.   I find many (especially modern) Foo Fighters songs layer his vocals or use effects on his vocals.   Generally those end up being my least favourite songs.   Which is weird because I love classic Def Leppard and they layer the fuck out of their vocals :)

I tend to like music where the singer gets to sing.   When they use stuff to enhance it, layer it, and create effects it eats the soul of the song :)  One of the reasons I find it hard to enjoy modern rock music.  When Dave gets to let loose and sing, he doesn't sound half bad.  No need to cover it up.

Parts of the chorus are exactly like Cherry Pie by Warrant! Once you hear that, it can't be unheard!

listened to it again today (this time with headphones, first time was in the car).  Dug it more.  With the exception of like 2 or 3 songs I liked it alot.  Sky is a Neighborhood and Happy Ever After don't really care for.

After a few listens I'm really digging it! Very 'Foo Fighters' with some very interesting tweaks thrown in. The album starts very strong but I don't think it tapers off as much as some people think.

My favourite tracks are: Run, Make it Right, La Dee Da, Sunday Rain and Concrete and Gold. I didn't Over listen to the singles either as I don't often listen to FM radio. So I really like Run.
T-Shirt is unfortunately too short too! I think this album will continue to grow and surprise a few people.

    Solid album.

The amount of production and layers makes me curious as to how they will go about performing the new material live.

Definitely a departure from the norm. Definitely a step in the right direction.
