So what exactly is Eddie's contribution on this album? :?
well personally although he is kinda understated, for reasons totally seperate to the fact he sings on it, i think its the best track on the record. a blinding tune
In my opinion, this is as of right now the album of the year.
It's also the most complete R.E.M. album since New Adventures In Hi-Fi.
What sucks is they aren't going to be touring to support it. These guys were the best live act around before PJ came and took the title some time in the late 90's. Still my ultimate dream double bill.

I absolutely agree with your post!
Collapse Into Now is the best R.E.M. record since their masterpiece New Adventures in Hi-Fi.
Really sad they don't tour with it.
Mine too. I don't know why this has never happened. Maybe PJ20..wouldn't that be awesome? I hope the old REM/PJ Christmas single is not the only time we get them together.
I've been listening to this album pretty constantly for the last couple of months now and it is easily one their best since New Adventures. 'Discoverer' is an awesome opener and there isn't a single song that I don't like on it.
Every R.E.M. album has some truly great lyrics (even Around The Sun had 'Final Straw') and I find these lines from 'Blue' constantly going around in my head:
I am made by my times
I am a creation of now
Shaken with the cracks and crevices
I'm not giving up easy
I will not fold
I don't have much
But what I have is gold
This is my time and I am thrilled to be alive.

I know I'm WAY late to the punch here, but, counter-intuitively, my love for REM is so deep that i just couldn't bring myself to listen to Collapse Into Now until just this month. Part of me was just scared to let 28+ years of some of the fondest memories be tarnished by a bad ending. Part of me just wanted to leave something for later, to dull the sense of loss with.
Anyhow, HOLY SHIT, am I glad I waited. I HAVE NOT LISTENED TO AN ALBUM STRAIGHT THROUGH THIS MUCH IN A ***LONG*** TIME.
Seriously, the only song I don't quite care for is Marlon Brando & I, but everything else is PURE GOLD.
Bands Have Fucking Wet Dreams About Going This Good For This Long And Ending With An Album This Great. Seriously.
Honestly in contention for the best album they every put out, judged on the whole.
Lifes Rich Pageant, New Adventures In Hi-Fi, Collapse Into Now
those are the three I would now put in any given order at the top.
The mainstream would probably say Automatic For The People, Out Of Time, Monster, or something, but fuck 'em.
I AM NOW JUST PRAYING THERE IS STILL HOPE TO HEAR SOME OF THIS BEAUTY LIVE, given that Michael has done some performances just recently now, and that he is actually playing stuff off of later records. PLEASE GOD, PLEASE?
Favourites:
Discoverer, Mine Smell Like Honey (probably in my top songs of all time now, deceivingly silly title great political song), Walk It Back, Everyday Is Yours To Win ... but i truly could listen to any track and be happy! Really happy!
Ps - To whomever said Blue sounds uncannily like Country Feedback, you would not be alone in your observation. I'm half sure it's intentional, given that Stipe has said CF is his favourite song before (I know he has also said that about a few others, like Fall on Me, lol) ... FWIW, to me it sounds like a cross between Country Feedback and E-Bow The Letter. Lol.

Saw them on the same bill Seattle 2001, Groundwork.
I have to say that uberlin is just classic R.E.M, as stated. Such a good song. Really loving this album too...
