They've done a cool thing today: they give you a chance to do your own mix of "It Happened Today" which is the song with Eddie on backing vocals. I Downloaded the the master tracks from www.remhq.com and it was really nice to play around with the different instruments and vocal takes in GarageBand (for Mac only I suppose but there's a PC alternative, too). You can bring up Eddies vocals and take down other instruments so you'll hear him better. Great choice of track for the remix!

That was better live in studio than the album take. At least the feeling I got when I listened to the album version for the first time. I know that good songs often need several listenings before you're caught and I'm sure this albums has many of those.

I've heard a few things from various journalists who've heard the album that the final track ('Blue') is one of the best things they've released in years. Really looking forward to this - love everything I've heard from it so far.

Nice to hear that... R.E.M. can always choose a great track to close their albums. Patti Smith sings on Blue and Michael Stipe does some spoken word thing during Pattis singing (so I've read, haven't heard the song, yet)

Totally love the three songs I've heard so far. I haven't been this excited for an R.E.M. album since New Adventures in Hi Fi. It's already pre-ordered on Amazon for cd.

Nice. What software did you use to mix? I haven't got around to doing mine yet.

A friend of mine has posted a mix of 'It Happened Today' here :

It bring Ed's harmonies to the fore. I don't want to spoil the ending but Eddie has the last word. Check it out and post a comment, you can even download it, I did.

I liked It Happened Today and Oh My Heart a bit more this time, Every Day .. song reminded me of Eels, loved the vocals on Walk It Back. That's it. Wish I liked it better.

Just listened to the NPR stream. This is the first album I've liked since New Adventures In Hi-Fi. My favorites are Uberlin and Oh My Heart. The 2nd half is a little weaker, but still very listenable. I'll definitely be picking this up next week.

Definitely their best since Hi-Fi. I don't quite like some of the slower songs. But all rockers are great.
  • This is a great album!
Listened to it a couple of times now, and it seems to be amazing.
The rockers are great, but Im also love the slower ones, with 'Oh my Heart' being a beautiful highlight.
    Fantastic!

Spin claims Vedder is on two tracks?? The one with Patti Smith as well. I haven't listened to anything past the four released previous to the stream, but is there any truth to this?

didn't know that he was on that one.. could be true though as there is a lot of feedback on this song.

    Thanks!

Two videos from the upcoming album movie thing. I really like these. I think this thing Stipe has thought up is going to work out really well.

Probably not a lot of Electronic fans around here but The Chemical Brothers did this video for each song thing for their album Further that they released last year. Totally different kind of videos from R.E.M., but it really gives you a new appreciation for the songs when you watch them with the videos. They included a DVD with the videos and making of feature along with the CD of the album.

I feel like they missed the mark a bit with this album. Not that the music is bad, because it's not. It's amazing. I just feel like REM covered themselves:

    Oh My Heart = Houston
Blue = E-Bow the Letter & Country Feedback

Some of the other songs seem similar to past works as well. I like the album, but would rather listen to the originals . . . any tips or opinions on what I may be missing?

Hmmm, I haven't listened to it enough times to ave really formed an opinion yet but interesting to hear people's thoughts.

It does not come with a download. The Vinyl is a plain white sleeve, and a one page lyric/credit sheet insert (similar to the work on Out of Time, Automatic, Monster). it is decent vinyl, not 180 g or anything, but I would not call it anything special.
