    Kansas City, KS/MO or Omaha/Lincoln, Nebraska would be the closest large city to the geographic "Center of the US"
    One of the locations claimed to be the Geographic Center of the Contiguous (or Conterminous) United States is pinpointed by a historical marker that is located within a small park near the town of Lebanon, Kansas. It is located at the intersection of AA Road and K-191, accessible by a turn-off from U.S. Route 281 approximately a mile north of the town. Although the marker supposedly indicates the actual point measured by a survey performed in 1918, in actuality, the measured center is about 1/2 to 3/4 mile away on a private farm. The farm's owner did not want tourists trudging through his field, so the marker was placed as close as possible. There is generally an American flag flying on the pole placed on top of the monument. Just to the south of the monument, yards away, exists a covered picnic area and small four-pew chapel where a couple can take wedding vows if they wish.

    This is CONTIGUOUS....or the lower 48 states.
    If you add in Alaska & Hawaii, The Geographical Center of the US would be in the small town of Belle Fourche, SD, closest city would be Rapid City,SD. How cool would it be to see Pearl Jam perform with Mount Rushmore or the Crazy Horse Monument in the background


    Before 1959, the National Geodetic Survey (NGS) placed the center of the United States at a point near the town of Lebanon, Kansas. When Alaska and Hawaii joined the union in 1959, the NGS designated Belle Fourche (pronounced bell foosh), South Dakota, the geographic center of the United States. The actual location and marker are about twenty miles north of the town on an uninhabited parcel of private pastureland. There isn't much to see at the actual location except an old flag on small concrete slab with the station marker set in the concrete. On the marker it reads "U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey Reference Marker." According to the NGS data sheet, the actual marker is "set in an irregular mass of concrete 36 inches below the surface of the ground."[1] However, in the town of Belle Fourche, there is a park dedicated to the honor.
