That is where the difference between the online PJ Radio and the Sirius/XM comes in, especially as the Sirius one gets off the ground in these first few weeks. The online PJ Radio explores more vastness of the live catalog, while Sirius/XM is a bit more streamlined for the average fan, as well as the hardcore. An interesting balance to achieve. But I hear you on the versions and we're working on getting more and different versions of things into their system, which also can't hold every version of every song at the same time. We are dealing with some technical limitations, but give it a bit more time and more versions will be making their way in.

That is interesting info. Thanks for the explanation. I wasn't certain if the online and Sirius versions were the same, but I suspected that space would be a limiting factor due to the huge number of recordings in the PJ catalog (live and studio). I can appreciate the challenge in trying to appeal to both hardcore and casual fans. A friend of mine who is a casual fan observed this repetitiveness as well, which was part of my motivation in digging a little deeper. He first noticed it after a full length concert was played, when a song that had just been played in the concert was followed pretty quickly (within an hour) by the same song. It may have been a different version but he was sort of turned off by hearing the same song so quickly. Does the program that determine the playlist consider previously played song titles as well as song versions in determining which song to play next?

That is my #1 pet peeve and steps have been taken to make sure that doesn't happen again. There is definitely a song hour separation in effect, and when he heard that it might have been in the very early going before some programming rules were in place.

Really been enjoying PJ radio on Sirius. The only criticism I would have is that the playlist seems to be a bit repetitive at times. Given the hundreds of live recordings available and the vastness of their catalog it would seem that the chances for hearing the same exact track from a specific show in the same day, or even the same week, would be remote. Yet I've observed this on multiple occasions over the last week or so. Take a cover like Kick Out The Jams for example, which according to PJ's official web site has been played live 16 times over the last 6 years. But if you look at the playlist stats from PJ radio, of the 9 times the song has been played on the radio in the last week, all but one of them comes from the MSG show this year. And on a few of those days the exact same track was played more than once. I find that odd. I checked several other random songs and discovered the same sort of repetitiveness with many of them. I can see how you could play the same song more than once a day, but if they do that wouldn't it better to pull from different shows?

It would be cool if we had in this forum, a thread where people nominated their favorite versions of songs performed live. Coming from this forum, it would be considered as fan picks given we're all fan enough to join this forum and participate and go to countless shows and buy zillions of bootlegs. So maybe those could be a priority. Or possibly have a fan-picks hour or something like that where these are featured. Maybe a 15 second soundbite intro from the fan as to why this was a pick. Or the DJ reads why this was a fan's pick. I'd pick "Know your rights Melbourne 2003" for example as that 1st airing was so raw and angry. "Black Pittsburgh 2000", what an incredible Mike solo, and one of the only long Beeeeee's of 2000. Or the Wash umbrella incident during that show. Or the fan singing Lukin in St Paul(I believe) 2003 where Ed was too sick to sing it himself and then the fan absolutely nailed it. Long Road Mountain view 2003 was such a powerful version!

Just curious but did the Vic recording come from the band or was it an audience recording? I remember hearing snippets from that show but the quality was pretty poor and I don't recall there being an official boot. Sorry I missed it on the radio. Is there a replay planned or are the individual songs part of the rotation?

there will be several replays through the week. what's it consist of? we'll be winging it and opening it up to you guys for the first one, then we'll have topics to focus on from there on out. Philly Spectrum will be the focus on 11/24 as they're currently tearing the place down.

  • Can anyone help me out?

I was just listening to Pearl Jam Radio on Sirius/XM (about 3:45PM CST on 11/17/10). They played a brief "This is Pearl Jam Radio" promo and it was a snippet of "Alive" from a concert. The crowd was singing the song instead of Eddie.

Does anyone know what concert that is from? There are probably mutlipe shows where that happened . . .

    Thank you!
    You will try.
