Another vote for Sonic Youth, my wife still swears that their set before the 06 Vegas show is the reason she now wears earplugs to all shows Oh and Thundercat opening for RHCP this past year. Awful!!

Buckcherry opening for Kid Rock back in 2002. I think it was at the height of singer Josh Todd's substance abuse issues, and well before the band launched a comeback with "Crazy Bitch" a few years ago. After the Kid Rock show, my friends and I hit a local club where a bar band did a better version of Buckcherry's "Lit Up" than Buckcherry had at the concert.
I also saw a (presumably local/regional) opening act in Cincinnati at a Better Than Ezra show in 1999 that was horribly mismatched with the headliner--the opener was a heavier rock band with a darker sound, badly put with the lighter alt-pop of BTE. At the end of the opener's set, the singer said "Goodnight! Enjoy your pussy rock!" I'm sure they had a beef with the promoter that booked them for the show, but there was no need to take it out on an audience that hadn't been hostile to them or anything.
I've seen some real shitty support bands in my time, but I think the band Minny Pops supporting Slash took the biscuit - new wave/art rock from Amsterdam based pensioners.
Check out their song 'Dolphin's Spurt' - I fucking dare you!
Someone mentioned Fiction Plane opening for the Police... How true!!
...another one: Peeping Tom (Mike Patton's band) opening for the Who in 2006. Sounded like someone throwing kitchen utensils down some stairs. Went back to the beer garden during this set.

I don't remember them being that offensively bad, but I only caught about half their set. One of their members came out for an extended Lateralus and that was pretty cool. They were light years ahead of Tomahawk.
Isis was a pretty solid Tool opener and Meshuggah wasn't horrible, but definitely not my thing.

We came in during their set so I can't pass judgement myself. I was trying to name them for the other poster, but completely agree about the drum duel in Lateralus. One of my favorite parts of that Atlantic City boot.
Thundercat opening for RHCP: sounded like two really long drawn out songs that lasted 45 minutes.
Psycodellic Ills opening for Butthole Surfers: Played 45 minutes but sounded like one song.
This terrible, terrible band called The Helicopters from Norway or somewhere.
They opened for Foo Fighters at the Brixton Academy, London in about 2000. They played this really gross throw-back, hair-metal cock-rock shitty-ass rubbish and the whole crowd were jeering and booing so much the band spat the dummy, dropped their instruments and stormed off stage, one of them flipping the bird to the crowd as he walked, only to get laughed at and flipped back by a couple of thousand crowd members (a great image).
I had a bad feeling as soon as I heard they were called "The Helicopters"...

Yeah I was at that show, they were pretty awful! Still, I would rather take cheesy pastiche over some of the tuneless bollocks I've had to endure over the years.

I think it's terrible that people will do things like this such as jeer, boo, throw things, and flip off a band. If you don't like them or are not interested in them them either don't show up that early, or find something else to do while they are on. Use that time to go out and get something to eat, drink a beer, go to the restroom, text, surf the web, whatever, but these bands have a right to play without being harassed. I don't really blame the ones that walk off the stage. I certainly wouldn't want to endure that. Have some respect and think about what if it was you or someone you know up there.
And then there's the always-polite, "This is our last song." [HUGE CROWD CHEER]
Stay classy, audiences.
Of course, I think the biggest issue isn't usually that these acts necessarily suck absolutely, but that they're a terrible mismatch with the headliner, thus unable to satisfy the crowd. Maybe they were chosen because the headline act is a fan of them, or they share management, or whatever, but they don't make a good package. My wife is going to see Pink tomorrow night, and her opening act this tour is The Hives. Which, on the one hand, it's cool that she's embracing her rocking side to show a band like that off to her audience, but I can't imagine the largely-female, largely-brought-to-the-show-by-pop-radio audience is going to be very receptive to the Hives' weirdo white-tie Swedish rock vibe. (Other good examples include U2 having Kanye West as an opener back in 2005, and Van Halen touring with Kool & the Gang last year--something I liked, but which a lot of people were against.)

The Cobbs warming up for BRMC were torture. Dead Combo just kind of scared me.
Also the Antlers and Deep Sea Diver with the Shins....again torture.

Still ... I'd rate them even or better then Mars Volta.
Or likes actual music more than an hour of noise.
