How did Denver win the division? San Diego had a better conference record. I thought that is how they determine the tie-breakers if the division records or the same since Denver, San Diego and San Diego each went 8-8 overall and 3-3 in the division. San Diego was 7-5 in the conference and Denver and Oakland went 6-6?

Since they have the same division record it came down to who had the better record against common opponents, which Denver took.

oh thought it was conference record then record against common opponents. but record against common opponents makes more sense.

    san diego was 3-5
    denver was 4-4

OK, I didn't know it was his last game, that makes a bit more sense. I guess that story was kind of lost in a day where so much was happening in the NFL.

I hear ya. Yeah it was a very exciting day. My heart (and brain) always goes out to a team like the Titans who finish with a better record than the winner of a crappy division (Denver) but doesn't make the playoffs. Tebow might have negative passing yards next week when they host a team that has four more wins than they do. What a system.

I a kind of sick of the format of the NFL. I would like to see a realignment and restructure.

Boy I'll say. I'm for the complete elimination of division champions. Keep the divisions the same for scheduling/rivalry reasons. But otherwise, seed them 1-6 based simply on record. So the AFC would look like this:

    1. New England (13-3)
    2. Baltimore (12-4)
    3. Pittsburgh (12-4)
    4. Houston (10-6)
    5. Cincinnati (9-7)
    6. Tennessee (9-7)

Wouldn't that make more sense than this?:

    1. New England (13-3)
    2. Baltimore (12-4)
    3. Houston (10-6)
    4. Denver (8-8)
    5. Pittsburgh (12-4)
    6. Cincinnati (9-7)

Since the league has gone to 4 divisions, the 2008 Patriots (11-5) missed the playoffs when the Chargers (8-8) won their division and the 2010 Giants and Bucs were each 10-6 and missed the playoffs while the Seahawks (7-9) made it winning their division. I just don't get it. Why should "Being the least crappy out of 4 crappy teams" be rewarded more than being 10-6 in a divsion that contains two other playoff teams (as the 2010 Bucs were). It's mind-numbing.

I mean...we all know it's just for ratings...but from a sporting aspect...it's not fair that geographical location of your team should mean so much. If Baltimore was in the NFC West, they'd have been to at least two Super Bowls in the past 8 years with how crappy that division has been.

I do agree with your premise regarding the division winners though. but that's the nfl product for you

There's nothing like seeing Jones miserable. Most Cowboy fans I know hate his ass. It's the only consolation they get out of a loss is seeing Jones. I just wish he would stick around more often after a loss so we could see more of this. If they win he'll be front and center celebrating, if they lose all you'll see is an empty box. This was right before halftime though, so he hadn't bailed yet. Though I'm surprised he didn't bail, then come back to the box when Dallas started mounting a comeback, then bail again when New York drove the nail in the coffin.
