I'd ask him to sign one of the many, many petitions that are on this forum. You know, the ones that annoy the fuck outta me

But I have met him albeit briefly and I just shook his hand and said thanks.

  • I'd say THANKS. For the music, the shows, the memories.

But most importantly that his Uke Songs LP is the ONLY thing that can calm my 16 month old down most times :D . The kid freakin loves it, he stops on a dime EVERY TIME, WITHOUT FAIL, the second Can't Keep starts.

It is a little bizarre but it hasn't failed yet.

If I met Eddie? oh snap.

San Jose native David Meinert, 29, is one of the powers behind what the band calls "Monkey Wrench Radio."

Meinert and his partner, James Lane, who work for the band's manager, Kelly Curtis, have built their radio transmitting equipment themselves. They have had varied luck with their transmissions, reaching 20 miles at a Labor Day festival in Seattle and only a few miles from a concert site in Sacramento.

The transmission of a July show in Chicago has been made into bootleg albums, another thing that Pearl Jam, unlike more greedy and less talented performers, approves of.

The pirate broadcasts came together after a January satellite-radio show broadcast by Pearl Jam and its singer, Eddie Vedder, in which radio stations across the country basically turned over their transmitters for whatever Vedder felt like saying and playing.

It was amazingly refreshing, compared to most of what passes for commercial radio these days.

The show gave the band a taste of free access to the airwaves.

"My philosophy is that the media is too controlled by large corporations," says Meinert, who was contacted by the band. "What you hear on radio is very limited. The public is too much a consumer of media and not a maker of media. This is a way to give you some creative input into it."

Vedder, who regularly gives out his home phone number to fans, will broadcast a cellular phone number during the radio shows so people can talk to him on the air.

The shows also promote other pirate stations, such as Free Radio Berkeley (104.1), which has been in a court battle with the Federal Communications Commission over its unlicensed transmissions.

The FCC contends it has power to restrict access to the airwaves. The Berkeley station's founder, Steve Dunifer, contends that the public owns the airwaves and has a right to set up community stations on vacant frequencies.

"I prefer to call it free radio or rebel radio," Dunifer says. "The FCC uses `pirate' in a pejorative sense. `Pirate' implies stealing something that belongs to someone else. We feel the airwaves belong to the people of this country."

Dunifer salutes what Vedder and his band have done and says that, if the FCC decided to take on the band, it would bring a huge amount of publicity to the plight of free stations.

"There are so many performers who will never be heard on commercial stations," he says. "There are so many people who will never have a voice, except on community stations like this."

Meinert agrees. "Is this illegal?" he asks when I question him about whether he fears theFCC. "I think that it's a morally decent thing to be doing. That's my position on it."

He plans to set up Monkey Wrench Radio at either 88.1 or 89.1 on the FM dial, starting next Friday, a day before Pearl Jam performs at Spartan Stadium. He expects to continue his broadcast through the show and after. Usually Vedder and other band mates stop by to chat and play records.

Meinert says he is 90 percent certain that the band's concert will be broadcast. The only things that could stop it would be equipment failure or unforeseen circumstances, which with pirate radio is always a possibility.

There's already a reaction from some commercial stations in the area, resentful that Pearl Jam won't cooperate with station promotions. I've heard D.J.s calling the band "Pearl Scam" and coming down on Vedder for getting sick during a Golden Gate Park concert in the summer. This San Jose show is a makeup for that one.

It's sad to see unjust criticism of a band that has consistently gone further than any other to de-commercialize the music and give it, as purely aspossible, to fans.

This is a band that should be saluted for walking the walk. It is one of the few bands that knows the true meaning and power of rock 'n' roll.

I was 13 yrs old, and this isn't the exact source, but Eddie said money didn't matter and he would give it away to people that needed it. So, I would ask him one question?

WHERE IS MY COLLEGE MONEY????!!!

(I have 56 credit hours and no degree. I need to finish and I'm out of scholarships and grants. You said on the radio '94, you would give it to me? Now, I spend money on music. I could have had a successful career. I'm kidding. I'm going to finish my degree. I think I can get another grant. Trade you a bottle of wine? then we are Even Flo)

I met Mike once!!!! In like 2007. And all I could fucking say was 'MIKE! I've just been to two of your shows!' . . . I forgot to tell him that I'd been a fan for most of my life, and that I absolutely adored him, and that I was so grateful for Pearl Jam, and that it was a total DREAM and an HONOUR to finally meet him . . .

All those things fly out the window. Essentially your manners kick in, you realise that this is a stranger who has never seen you before in his life, and thus you don't want to seem too familiar, or take too much of his time . . .

Mike, being the wonderful man that he is, smiled and said in that lovely yank accent 'Oh really? So you had a good time?' and I THINK I might have said 'Of course, I love you!' but I was backing away and I was very overwhelmed so I can't really remember if I said 'I love you' or not . . . !

So what would I say to Eddie? I think I'd probably find myself in a similar situation . . . I'd realise that he's actually a stranger and I'd probably retreat from being too full on.

I'd also probably fucking FAINT. It would do my head in. I can't actually imagine what it would be like to come face-to-face with the great man, to have him see me. To exist in his eyes would be SO WEIRD.

Someone once suggested writing a note and keeping it in my wallet on the slim chance that we ever cross paths. Which I think is a pretty good idea! Then they know what they mean to you, and they know who you are. But there's no awkward, embarrassing, over-familiar moment . . .

Yep, that's a good idea. I'm gonna do that :D

There's also something kinda sweet and hopeful about carrying around a note for your hero! It would have to be good luck!

I actually met him in Copenhagen last year. I tried to remember what I wanted to say to him but I was far too focused on whether he'd approach us or not (we were last in line - a small gathering outside the venue. He did approach us and all I could do was shake his hand and say 'Nice to meet you Mr. Vedder. It then evolved into a conversation and we must have talked for 5 minutes since we talked about the tour, their rehearsal space and new material, vacation, the venue and how hot it was, a flag we threw onstage in Athens and much more. He even revealed they thought about doing an acoustic pre-show with doors open to cool off the venue, but weren't allowed to because of the neighbours (!) How awesome it would have been!

He was just, hands down, one of the nicest strangers I've ever met, and he was just fully present despite some surrounding Danish guards appearing a bit tense and strict. There was calm in the eye of the hurricane indeed. He's just a nice and very bright guy who happens to be a greatly talented songwriter and musician. I'd love to re-live the conversation again since the exact choice of words and the sentences exchanged have started to already fade in my mind. But a great guy, absolutely. My brother and girlfriend, who were also present, felt the same way

I was lucky enough to have met Ed at the Toronto Film Festival screening of Body of War on Sept. 11 2007 in Toronto Canada. My girlfriend and I were just waiting outside the Isabel Bader sp? theatre when he walked out on his way to dinner before playing live at the screening that night. He was just like everyone says - humble, gracious and engaging. He made sure to sign everyone's items and took time to speak briefly with each person.I didn't have anything to sign so we just shook hands and I said "Thanks for the music." He replied "Thanks for listening!" with a big smile. It was a cool moment for sure.Funny too seeing all the different film "celebrities" from other films getting in and out of their limos and suvs as they were shuttling around to the different film festival screenings with their handlers lol.And there is Ed and Phil Donahue and company walking off to dinner on foot with no entourage or suv escorts.

Aw man!!!!!!!! This is awesome CharlieP! It's so nice hearing from people who have actually met him. So validating for all of us (because the reports are always so positive). Thank you :)

I can't believe you chatted for 5 minutes, I'm not sure I'd be able to stay cool for that long! Although, I reckon if I was waiting outside a venue for him, and he approached me (and the group), it wouldn't be nearly as awkward as approaching him on the street (the way I met Mike). It's planned, he's approaching YOU, and giving you his time. You're not interrupting him while he's eating/shopping/trying to be normal.

I think it's probably a positive circumstance in which to meet him, it's not invasive and he knows you're a mega fan and will be a bit OTT . . . It's a safe situation. I waited outside a venue once in 1998 I think? And saw his little body curled up on the backseat of a van driving out! But that's the closest I've been. And even that made me feel like a stalker . . . but these days I think the waiting outside thing is a really valid and sensible way to meet him . . . I'd do it if I knew where to wait! :)

I met Eddie last year after the Memphis show. We talked a bit and he was very cool.

My wife and I had just taken my parents to see him for Tulsa #1 & #2, and at the end of Tulsa night 2, my parents, being the only people in their upper 60's in the first three rows, caught his eye. He gave my mother the pick after Hard Sun and spoke to the audience a bit saying that there was the cutest couple up here. He closed the show with Dream a Little Dream, keeping eye contact with my parents the whole time.

In Memphis when I saw Ed, I told him that the couple in Tulsa was my parents and he smiled and said that they had a great energy about them. Cool experiences all around.

Before DC show was at Smithsonian with my buddy and just as I entered escalator to go to second floor, spotted Jeff with his mom and dad.

I also didn’t know what to say so just yelled “Jeff”. He looked up at me as we were going up and I gave him a thumbs up......a freakin thumbs up...  Duh

....finally realized I could communicate with the man so said. “See you tomorrow night”

As he was with his parents, didn’t want to go back down and bug him....seemed to be having a good time so let him be. Now wish I would have thanked his parents for supporting him.

As to meeting Ed...as a previous poster has said, I’d simply tell him “Thanks for all the great music and all the positive emotions it’s given me. “

Oh my buddy still makes fun of my thumbs up gesture....

Spoke to Glen as well. Incredibly nice guy.

    That's a really nice story. :)

I've run into band members several times, and each time have been either too shy or not wanted to bother them, with the exception of Eddie last summer when I did say thank you. A brief exchange, but he was very real.

I remember Ed replying back to you. My brother & I were also there, each with a tambourine in hand.

That's cool that you remember.Seems like yesterday.Cannot believe how the years fly by.I remember you guys as well. What a memorable day that was.Crazy thunderstorm before we were let in.We were absolutley soaking wet and freezing. We could not believe our luck when we walked in and sat down third row center. It was also so nice to see Tomas Young and hear him speak!
