I almost cried reading about Ed crying. I hope there are youtube videos of this show because I would love to see clips of this awesome and emotional show. No band should go through what Pearl Jam went through. Great setlist tonight. I wish I could've been there with all of you. Hope everyone had a fun and safe time tonight.

Made me cry silent tears
Hold on to the thread....The currents will shift....Glide me towards you....

Thank you for this great and vivid fanview. You allowed me to finally release some emotions I felt since following the show online here on the forum and thru vitalogy_live's pix/vid last night. Finally I cried and let it all out. Your words made me feel like I was there too. It hurt that I cdn't be there (cd only make it to London) and I wd have loved to have been there. I'm not gonna watch any vids on youtube but will wait for the boot and quietly imagine it all again, with my eyes closed and your description in my mind. Enjoy the rest of the tour :)
if I keep holding out,.... will the light shine through?

    Great show, great crowd.

London could stand to take lessons from Berlin in how to behave for a concert. Might have been the best crowd (energy, behavior, overall vibe) since Chicago Soldier Field in 95.

Thats unfair. You can't compare a festival crowd with a solely Pearl Jam show. Were the crowd bad at the O2 last year? ;)

its a fair point but the hard rock thing isnt that much of a festival really, i dont see that more than 5% of that crowd were there to see the hives, harper or gaslight anthem -- me thinks that was a crowd wanting to see PJ

First show where I wasn't surrounded by a bunch of pushing and shoving idiots but by a lot of very cool and friendly people. And first time the people in front of me were small enough to get a good view. All in all probably not my favourite show setlistwise, but sure the most emotional. Lots of very moving moments. Thanks to everyone who was there with me. Whoever you are...

So did I, came through very late, read it while half asleep and realised they probably had the night of their lives. Hope you enjoyed Berlin Dimitris

  • I don't normally post up about the shows but I think this one warrants a few words.

This show was a last minute decision for me due to work commitments. The previous two PJ shows I have attended at Wulheide were great and I expected this one to be no different. The band love this venue (with good reason) and the Berlin crowds continually step up to dish out love and respect for the band and last night was no exception.

Many 10C members were treated to a fabulous listen-in soundcheck - the highlights for me being PIL, Lukin II and Love Boat Captain. Pretty much no-one knew PIL but given the inclusion of it on both the Belfast and London setlists (without being played) I had looked into and suspected some John Lydon love may be coming out - it was interesting to have to explain to some of the youngins who John Lydon and Public Image Limited were - I only felt slight old after that!! :D

I wondered whether the band were going to pull out LBC and they did a full version in soundcheck. I have to note that Ed did not get through the line "Lost 9 friends we'll never know..." in soundcheck - he simply didn't (or couldn't) sing it and I suspect given the events later in the night that it was just too close to home for him to deal with on the day. LBC got a tremendous roar from the 10C members waiting outside and I really like to think that they played it especially because they knew we were out there.

The show itself was the one I have been waiting for on this Euro tour. I thought the first set was stellar - Push Me, Pull Me into Immortality into In Hiding was (I felt) an indication that the band knew the crowd could handle some 'non-greatest hits' stuff.

The crowd were amazing - they were extremely vocal throughout and every person there was participating - it was the 'definition' of an energy exchange. At one stage during Black I looked around to see every single person at the venue (top to bottom) clapping in time. The band were very visably moved by the crowd response and as others have noted after Black Eddie started to say something about the Roskilde anniversary and promptly broke down in tears and couldn't continue. Stone had to come over and give him a reassuring hug - needless to say we ALL cried at that. A moment of silence was suggested (by Stone) to remember those who we had lost and pretty much all the crowd (except for a couple of numpties) complied with this request - it was really very moving and it was very evident that the crowd and the band were at one at that point and you really cannot ask more than that from a PJ gig (irrespective of whatever is on the setlist).

Ed pretty much butchered Come Back - when you listen to it on PJ Radio you can hear the raw emotion in his voice - and for that very reason it was GREAT. It was not about making it technically good but more about feeling his (and the rest of the band's) continued anguish about those people who one day went to see our favourite band perform and did not come home. You cannot buy that kind of expression and you cannot fake it - and it is the reason why PJ find themselves with the kind of loyal following they have. They leave it all on the stage - good and bad - and you just don't get that consistent kind of honesty from any other band.

I have been seeing PJ play since 1995 and have been to many. many concerts by different artists and no-one comes as close to connecting with an audience as they do but hey I'm preaching to the choir here aren't I? :D

The setlist included the Once, Footsteps, Alive (Mamasan) trilogy in the second encore but we only got Alive after some changes - that was a shame as it really would have pushed the show further into the realms of greatness if that had come out.

Kick out the Jams with the guys from REM was also fun as was Ed's Under Pressure duet with Ben Harper earlier in the night (which I filmed in full and will put up a little later together with some photos).

All in all a very memorable show and well worth the early morning flight back to work from Berlin and the tiredness.

My deep gratitude and respect to the band for a tremendous show - I cannot see a future day in my life without wanting to see you live again (lucky for me I'm going to three other shows on this tour! ;) ).

Additionally my thanks to PJ security who magnificently arranged the entry into the venue last night - more of this fabulous organisation please. :D

PS - Congrats to my mates who got engaged last night at the gig - awesome stuff - now we just need to get the boys on board as the wedding band!!!! :D

This was a fantastic night! It was my 5th show and they played 13 songs I never heard live before, i.a. amazing songs as Immortality, Low Light, In Hiding, Long Road! This band is just fuckin´ incredible! I think the set wasn´t as fast as 2006 or last year, but given this special date, it´s just comprehensible. It´s a pity that the memorial with lighters/mobiles did not work during first encore (or the crowd singing Arc or LBC), but during ed´s very emotional speech and also during Come Back I saw many lights held up! Playing Alive after that was kind of celebration of life (didn´t Ed said once on Storytellers that the fans changed the actual meaning of the words into something positive and life-affirming?) I hope they will come back to Wuhlheide, Berlin very soon, cause this is just such a great venue filled with the best people! Very happy to be part of it! :) Werchter next...

And all the best to the 10c members getting married! Hope you´ll have a great life together!

I've got to say that I thought the show was about 15 minutes too short.. other than that I've got no complaints :)

2nd encore (Alive - Speech - Come Back - Alive) was the most beautyfull thing I've ever witnessed! So real that Ed guy is

First of all I will thank all the people who were there! THANKS - you were all a major part of being the best crowd I´ve been a part of. :D

The show was great - as always. I notice some of you thinks it was short, 2 h 20 min (my counting) pretty good I may say. The band seemd to be on fire. After Long Road as a emotional opener rock broke loose I may say. Got Some into Why Go (I´ve become a fan of that song live great sing-along part).
Then PMPM-immortality-in hiding  Mike´s solo in Immortality was especially great. The rest of the first set was a great mix-up......late Corduroy /and Low Light.

I had a great time during first encore - starting of slow and the ending in a ROCK N´ROLL party-frenzy.

2 encore starting of with Unthought Known (My absolute favorite of Backspacer) and first time I´ve experienced it live GREAT.

And then the show got really special and emotional. BLACK - the best song in the world among the best crowd at the most beautiful venue................speechles - the end of the song made the hair stand on the back of my neck, my entire body infact. Haven´t heard anything like BLACK last night!
Eddie´s speech before Come Back wow what a emotional moment among the crowd ending with a minute of silence (the fuckers who kept screaming - FUCK YOU)
before the chillin´ Come Back - then when the first coards of Alive vere played it was like everybody aggreed on making this song this night a great celebration of life itself. Beautiful!

Thanks again everybody who was there yesterday!
Run away my son. See it all. Oh see the world.

I was there , man what a fantastic trip.
From the beginning to collect the ticket , till te opening of the gate , a little late , but who cares ???
People from all over the world.
Have meet people from Ireland , England , Germany , Portugal,France , Denmark , Poland , Greece and many more.
    Just one big family.
    Still shaking......
Ben was great , and PJ where out of this world.
Good that PJ stood still with the accident 10 years ago.
    Means that they really care.
My wife was for the very first time with me at PJ , and even she loved it.
She loved very much the slower songs.
A superb ambiance in this magnificant place.
To bad it was over at 22.15 , it was to early to go to bed , so i did take a lot of beer , and had a little hangover this morning , but when i think back at yesterday evening, its already gone.

Next time there are in Berlin , I'll be there again.

Hope to see you all there again.

  • It's almost tradition by now that I post some lines after attending a show of my all time favourite band

So, but this year I lack words, somehow!
I thougth nothing can top Berlin Show 2009, but PJ always can!
It was the most emotional -personally spoken- show I have been so far but also the most meaningful one to me. I really got back hope for a better world for a moment...
the songs they choose, the way they performed them, the words that were spoken, the increadible audience and its intense reaction to the music - it all was so stunning and wonderful to experience.
Very good vibes were felt by all the people being united there... it was kind of magic to me.
Especially during world wide suicide and, furthermore, EVOLUTION, I thought we and the earth are shaking to a better state of being and maybe a new era of times has its beginning...
well... I was really high on the music...

but it was written here before, also for the band it seemed very emotional due to the very sad 10th anniversary of roskilde, but Alive brought back the happiness of being alive and doing just good in a peaceful surrounding.
    Alive was incredible, too...
The band and the audience were on fire: so yeah, 2010 watch it all go on fire, but on the tunes of pure and best rock music and lots of love.
    It was wonderful.

The weather was perfect again, so how lucky is Berlin?
and only friendly and nice people were around, PJ fans are just the best.

and the poster? and the European tour t-shirt? I need to thank Pearljam over and over again also for the great art.
After having been in Africa and having felt deeply in love with the elefants and wild life, I could not believe the poster of this night. Perfect... beautiful... and just wow. (and yes: an elefant just does not forget).

... I am stunned and happy and still full of energy about that night in Berlin again.

    So thanks to Pearl Jam.

and to all the fans out there: if you once will listen to the bootleg of this show, I guess some magic can still be felt ...
a very special night for many of us. (my italian friends with whom I am here say the same: a very special and also very emotional - personally spoken- show).

so did I say "thank you Pearl Jam!!!", already?
so I just hope and wish they rock on for the next 10 years, with such wonderful music and a great spirit all around!

DANKE so sehr and VIVA Pearl Jam! :) :P

...there's not much to add for me in the face of the incredible words of my previous writers, so I won't even try to write adequate lines

==all I want say is just thank you - to anybody who attended the show and was part of such a fantastic crowd - to anybody from the band for creating this unique Pearl Jam (and especially Wuhlheide) atmosphere: you made very many people really happy - or to be precise: just happy, forgeting about all sorrows and fears - thank you to anybody who made this show possible, your efforts are very appreciated==

and in second thought I changed my opinion on the poster: it is a great immage. this unfortunate date in Pearl Jam history should be remembered and that's exactly what the band does at every show: they are aware of this event and force anybody to do anything that something like ten years ago will never happen again. so there's also a very very small piece of good with the death of those nine people: anything a human being can do to prevent such a disaster again is done.

    ==we won't forget you, r.i.p.==

It's really great to read through all your experiences. It's always is a nice touch when people come to "your" country for this very reason and leave with a smile on their faces! I am doing my first concerts out of Germany this year (Hyde Park and Mestre/Venice were/are on the list besides Berlin) and even if I visited the United Kingdom 3 times beforehand it's always great to travel around in another country, learn about the culture and meeting different people. I'm looking forward flying to Venice as I have never been in Italy. I'm always amazed by how multicultural the audience at a Pearl Jam gig is...maybe that's one of my favorite things about going to these concerts (besides the band obviously). So yeah I want to thank all of you who visited Berlin and made this evening very memorable. Hope you had a great time.

The bad thing: still no Off He Goes, Blood, Smile, Thin Air or Brain of J for me. But that's ok since we were treated with a superb setlist last night. My Highlights were definitely the stretch from Push Me Pull Me to Johnny Guitar. JG actually was the best of the seven Backspacer songs played that night. I really enjoyed Comatose and Spin the Black Circle which brought sort of a Punk spirit to the gig. Public Image pretty much passed me by and left me thinking "Why don't you know that fucking song?!"...welll  Kick Out The Jams...wow...I love that song...I got the original MC5 LP from my father years back and when Peter Buck (and I'm not forgetting to mention Scott McCaughey) was introduced to the stage I was like    ...seriously don't ever see THIS happen. Buck has been one of my real idols for so long...his playing is insane! Well he couln't show off that night with four guitars on stage but that was definitely the nights highlight for me. To this point the Berlin gig was an awesome rock show with many memorable moments and one of the best crowds ever (and I was at the very front). There was a lot of pushing yes, but everyone looked after his/her neighbour, smiling all the time, just enjoying the show....really a good feeling, I tell you that.

I have never seen a show change that quickly as when they stepped up to the 2nd encore. Everybody knew that Eddie just HAD to mention Roskilde and everyone was expecting some very special moment. Well, it was. There are already a lot of words written on this subject so I'm gonna leave it at that but I think playing Come Back right after the speech was both totally unexpected and fitting. Such a great song that got a lot more meaning to everyone in the audience that night. I also thought the "quiet moment" worked quite well with most of the audience in perfect silence. Alive brought the house down in an instant.

So what's to say? Congratulation to all the people who got to hear Love Boat Captain at the soundcheck. Someone mentioned that they played it there cause they knew you were outside - I really believe that, too! I wasn't quite able to make it that early...Got to earn some money for all those great Posters that they sell at the shows  The elephant poster is an instant favorite of mine! Also congratulations to the soon-be-weds! I'm sure not just your night was memorable. :)

    Keep playing the Wuhlheide!
