The crowd were amazing - they were extremely vocal throughout and every person there was participating - it was the 'definition' of an energy exchange. At one stage during Black I looked around to see every single person at the venue (top to bottom) clapping in time. The band were very visably moved by the crowd response and as others have noted after Black Eddie started to say something about the Roskilde anniversary and promptly broke down in tears and couldn't continue.

I have been seeing PJ play since 1995 and have been to many. many concerts by different artists and no-one comes as close to connecting with an audience as they do but hey I'm preaching to the choir here aren't I? :D

    Great post!

First of all, let me say this (again). I fucking love this band. Everytime I see the guys live, I feel that instant connection with the band, with the people in the crowd and between the crowd as a whole and the band. And I've picked out a few passages of your post that I feel says it all. The connection between the guys on stage and the people in the crowd I feel is unique. I have never seen that kind of emotion at any other rock show. I've never seen the kind of humble and genuine appreciation Eddie always not only expresses, but pretty much oozes, for the love we throw the bands way. It makes for a complete sense of unity, a kind of symbiosis between the band and their fans which means that everytime is a deeply personal experience. It's amazing.

Yesterday I travelled with my wife from Berlin to Prague to see Aerosmith perform. My wife is a massive Aerosmith fan and since she goes with me to PJ shows I thought it only fair that I go with her to Aerosmith. Those old guys throw on a good show - with emphasis on show - they have a lot of energy and are good at what they do. But they are miles away from having that personal connection with the fans. The energy exchange was no where near what it's been in all the PJ shows I've been to. My wife had a megaton of a time though and that was the most important thing :)

But Pearl Jam is just something in a class of its own. Time and again they exceed my expectations and my love for their music and the integrity with which they handle their status is something that continues to impress the hell out of me!

Oh, did any of you Irish girls out there reading this wear a Mrs Eddie Vedder shirt? You missed the first handful of songs from being to late and mistook me for a German on the train ride back to the hotel? You asked to see the poster I was lugging around with me since apparently they sold out of the thing at the show. Just wanted to say thanks for the chat :D

My first ever Pearl Jam concert was at Roskilde in the mosh pit infront of the main stage. 10 years and 11 PJ concerts later and wiser I had found my way to Berlin and Wuhlheide. And what a night! - First of all, a Berlin that bathed in sun and 30 degrees and happy people everywhere. Very glad it was not in-door, but rather the most beautiful venue I have been to (ties with Arena in Verona) in the green outskirts of Berlin.

The last set was heart-wrecking, sad and beautiful at the same time. The Eddie speech and the whole last set is something you gotta hear/see yourself, and I guess his speech kind of continues in Come Back, a very emotional version that is where he has a hard time singing it.

Thanks Pearl Jam for being the best live band ever to exist in the Universe, and I hope I will see you in the next couple of Light Years.

You wouldn't happen to be from Sweden, would you? If so you talked a bit with my wife a few hours before the show. I was off taking a leak but she told me about three swedish brothers who'd been at Roskilde (as I was with the wife). If so, glad to hear you had a good show :).

Can't agree enough with you on that last section. Black is my favorite song and this version was the most beautiful I've ever seen it. That ending with the whole crowd clapping and do-do'ing even after the band stopped, complete with Ed breaking down, knowing what he was about to talk about it. Makes me choke up a bit still.

Black is one of those early songs that for many, many, many people (myself very, very, very much included) got under their skin and released an emotion that they/I was feeling at the time (and no doubt people felt after that time and are still coming across to this day). But, that version went from being some sort of sorrowful longing lost love song to being a return of feelings and love for a band that has been so very important to us for many, many, many years now. We turned that around and for me that was the reason Ed felt able to bring up the tragedy, we made him feel how he has always made us feel through all those years. Connection is such a beautiful thing, the whole of that bowl in the wood in Berlin felt it and I doubt any of us will ever forget it. Tributes have rarely been so powerful, and so important. I am forever moved. I'll stop commenting on this gig now, looking forward to seeing what the next 20 years bring!

Ok, after a few days at home, back from Berlin, i'm trying to find the right words for the best night in my whole life! Not easy to get on with normal life but you don't have the choice! ;)

Berlin 2009 was absolutely fantastic and i thought that it will be almost impossible to top that...well, we all know that it happened!! Thanks to PJ who brought me to tears, gave me goosebumps all over my body, made me smile/laugh and thought-provoking!! Thanks to the crowd...i will never forget Unthought Known (I'm sure that we will all have a Video "Unthought Known - Live in Berlin" very soon!!!!), 18.000 people clapping from the first note to the end of the song!!!

Nothing more to say/write! Hope to see all my friends soon (hopefully in 2011!!)! :D

This show is impossible to describe.
Guess you just had to be there!
I went through almost all feelings a human being can possibly contain.
    All in one night!

And of course Roskilde being my first PJ show, it was a very very emotional night that PJ handled in a very very respectful way.

And I was so happy to finally hear Low light!!!!

I´m in awe and out of words....

    Great show, great crowd.

London could stand to take lessons from Berlin in how to behave for a concert. Might have been the best crowd (energy, behavior, overall vibe) since Chicago Soldier Field in 95.

Thank You for Long Road as an opening.
    Push me, pull me... wow!

And Just breathe... but unexpectedly Black was the most emmotionally song. These words fits so much to my life now. I was ashamed but I cried. I can't listened this song now (in Gdynia too) and I am not sure how long this will last. Almost the same like Sad. Sometimes it's not good that Pearl Jam lyrics are so close to real life. It's like reopening wounds.
But the show was great. Like always with Pearl Jam.

Finally I am back from Berlin, too.
And finally I could read through the whole post ... all so wonderfully said,
great descriptions and points of view, all very good to read about,
So there is nothing to add, nearly ;)

A lot is said about the 2nd encore and I got very emotional, too. Who didn't except of the 1 or 2 within so many thousands?
However, when I did my first post in an internet café at Prenzlauer Berg, all that was left was the pure positive energy of ALIVE. We got “the gone” involved but were aware to be alive!
and I guess, we were all so happy to be alive and dancing along to this magical music.
    What a positive feeling!

So, but as said before, my personal best moments in songs -I thought- were in WWS and DTE.

But now I’ve read through all these great stories to tell, and there are so many good and intense moments rising up my memory, too.
    So thanks dear writers here!

And if there is just one thing I regret, it is that I missed my favourite song these times:
Unthought known, somehow my song to dance along, and how I wished to dance one more time to it!
(I heard it live first in Nijmegen and there, they played it just fantastic, but Berlin was even better, I guess)
Well, but I stood in line for getting my survival: water.
and I am getting old, not being able to get through a whole concert without a break in form of water... mhmmm. so I took pictures of the beautiful sky and watched all the people clapping... so wonderful. So, yes, lets hope for a Unthought known video… they did some live connection to somewhere, right?

To me this show offered the whole variety of life, emotions all over, from the best rock music being balm for your soul to critical songs about our fucked up world, further along to the memories to all the loved ones you are now so missing! Or those that had to go just too early,
but above all there was only love spreading all around. And to me it seemed that we celebrated this love in Alive very extremely and actually during the whole concert.
Big words for a concert, but well... it was a big concert I know now!!!

and one thank you is missing: Danke Berlin... it makes it all so easy and it is such a nice and friendly and cool place to be, especially for a Pearl Jam gig… and I am talking here not only about the most beautiful venue ever heard and seen: Wuhlheide.
My friends and I are still dreaming of the Kastanien Lane…

so yes, hopefully to Berlin 2011.
and to all the lucky ones out there: enjoy the rest of the tour and spread out the PJam!

peace and love and viva Pearl Jam!
    nicki :P
there is no way to peace, peace is the way!

How cool was the little jam before Comatose when they messed up?

This was a really special show. Lots of amazing moments. Black and Come Back are the obvious highlights but I also loved hearing a few more Backspacer songs with Gonna See My Friend, Johnny Guitar (Matt Cameron you are the bomb on those two!) and a personal favourite, The End, which was stunning.

I also loved Push Me Pull Me, couldn't believe we got to here that. The soundcheck was incredible too!

Hello and thank you! Was great to meet you before the gig!!

Berlin was great, I though Mike was very much rocking a Strummer-esque look when he first came on. I loved it! :D

As some of you may know a very good friend is currently fighting what he has been told is a terminal illness. So the gig very much had highs and lows for me. It's probably the first time I'd really taken in the lyrics to The End so hearing it live was really tough, but cathartic at the same time. The night was a bit of an emotional rollercoaster to say the least! So glad I was there though!
