Im just curious. So you think logging fucks should be kicked in the teeth. Do you enjoy the furniture in your house or would you rather sit on the floor. I know that there are some that have done a lot of damage. I get that but I think you should realize that theere are many regulations in place when it comes to logging in America. Not to mention they are some tough MOTHERFUCKERS and you might want to think twice about that.

It takes one tree every year per person to meet their needs for paper, packaging, lumber, fiber compounds and panel products.

Oregon's most abundant tree is the Douglas-fir, which is also Oregon's state tree. 80% of all trees West of the Cascades are Douglas-firs.

One of the largest wildfires in Oregon was the Tillamook Burn that occurred between 1933 and 1951. The combination of the four fires in this time destroyed 360,882 acres.

Despite the rapid growth of agriculture, the development of cities, highways, industrial areas and electric transmission lines there is nearly the same amount of Forestland today as there was 300 years ago.

Oregon sells its wood and paper products in all 50 states and approximately 40 countries. This includes lumber, panels and engineered wood products, millwork, household, pulp and paper products.
Stats and Figures

28 million out of Oregon’s 62 million-acre land base is forestland, or about 46% of the state’s total landmass.

The forestry products industry is the second largest industry in Oregon generating sales of approximately 13 billion dollars and employing 75,000 Oregonians. This includes, but not limited to, logging and trucking companies, sawmills and pulp and paper manufacturing operations.

About 57% of all forestland in Oregon are owned by the federal government. In 2005, more than 2.5 million tree seedlings were planted on federal government lands.

In Oregon growth rates exceed harvest rates by a wide margin. The long-term sustainable timber harvest is approximately 7.5 billion board feet a year, according to a study by Oregon State University.

Every timber harvest in Oregon generates funds to be used by local, county and state governments. Currently, 60% of revenues from state timber sales go to local counties and schools.
Laws and Regulations

Reforestation is required to start within 1 year after every harvest and it must be completed within 2 years.

Within a single ownership clearcuts are limited to 120 acres. Clearcuts also cannot take place within 300 feet of another clearcut under the same ownership until the area is successfully reforested.

Oregon Forest Practices Act (1971) - Regulates forest operations to protect a wide range of resources, including water quality, fish and other wildlife. Oregon practices this regulation by performing the following:
Provide comprehensive riparian area protection
Assure water quality, fish habitat and wetlands are guarded
Protect wildlife habitat and diversity by retaining sensitive sites, snags and down-wood
Promote landscape structure and aesthetics by limiting regeneration harvest unit size
Reforest within two years after harvest with a mix of native tree species
Maintain forest productivity by minimizing soil disturbance and promote growth
Minimize resource impact of road by applying strict construction and maintenance standards
Requiring permits before harvesting

Common School Lands – When Oregon became a state in 1859 the federal government granted 124,000 acres (16%) of forestland located primarily in the Elliott State Forest. The Oregon Department of Forestry manages the forests through an agreement with the Department of State Lands. Revenue generated from these lands goes to the Common School Fund, which goes towards public education in Oregon.

In college I have studied environmental science classes such as fisheries management, harvest systems management, and forestry classes. All in which I excelled at and wrote incredible papers by doing lengthy research. I am an environmentalist because I love this earth and I love all its life forms. Not one single life out weights another in regards to importance. We need all living things to form solid ecosystems throughout all habitats.

Logging has been out of control for hundreds of years. No one needs to fall a tree hundreds of feet tall and hundreds or thousands of years old. Those are sacred living creatures that give us great gifts in this life.

my uncle was a logger.
i myself have worked in two different sawmills back in iowa.

Typically, a wide variety of trees are replaced by a single kind - often it is lodge pole pines because they grow so straight they make great lumber. We already know hemp products can replace so many of our wood needs and you can harvest hemp 3-4 times every year, vs once every 100 years.

I live in the recovering aftermath of Idaho's first white settlers - the miners, the loggers, the ranchers, and things are so fucked up compared to what once was. I see the mine tailing, I see the dredge ponds, I see the pathetic forests that now exist, I see the clear cuts, I see the lack of abundant wildlife, I see cheatgrass where a variety of ground cover used to exist, and I clean up epic amounts of human trash when out exploring the wilderness. I don't see how anyone can sit there with a straight face and pretend we aren't impacting this planet. We are snapping strands on the spider web much quicker than they can be repaired. And still, what % cares enough to actually get involved? I don't want to know the answer...

I am continually disgusted by the amount of shit on the ground. I don't understand why people litter. It's disgusting. Not just paper, but cigarette butts. People should have to put them out on their foreheads instead of tossing them in the park, and see how long they keep smoking. I am a former smoker, and can't imagine how grossly I contributed to the pile of wet tobacco filters come spring thaw.

Who ever said were not impacting the planet???. But to say we are snapping stands on the spider web and saying that they can't be repaired is so stupid. You have no idea of how the World works, no one knows. It is constantly going through cycles. Do you know much poultion is realeased when a volcano erupts??? Alot more than we produce. There are alot of things that humans need to do better, but to be as arrogant as to say that humans are destroying the plant is ridiculous. And to value a tree more than a human life tells me alot about you as a person. Like I said if humans are so bad for the planet why not make it one less human on the planet and off your self.

World population is growing so fast and continuously that our presence here, along with human need to consume natural resources WILL, in the end, most likely will result in the end to human civilization. But humans probably wont destroy the planet. We'll just destroy ourselves instead. So the best solution here is to save what we can to prolonge our own existance.

FYI - Mt. St. Helens is a good case study for how the earth naturally heals itself.

Also, remember that trees and plants are all in a race for survival and dominance. Each species has tricks to gain advantage over their rivals. Doug Firs patiently take over a forest while species like Aspen will take advantage of a forest fire.

Lastly, with good forest management, a forest can become much stronger over time. I can't speak for the clear-cuts in the west, but a forest that is selectively cut will be healthier in ten years due to extra light that can penetrate the forest floor.
