He was drafted by Pittsburgh though. Chances are he'll be available sooner rather than later.

Very true, no doubt he won't be pitching his whole career in Pittsburgh. Edit: I am pretty sure that sentence makes no sentence gramatically but you get the point.
I don't see him pitching there for more then four seasons. Unless they turn things around and compete, but I doubt that.

I didn't know cole was a yanks pick. what round/year was that?

I think he comes from a rich family so he was able to turn down their offer. They knew it was a risk signing him.

It's common for guys to get drafted late in the draft if they have strong college commitments. I'm guessing cole was a late round flier when the yanks took him

His career could go nowhere and he'd be screwed. It's probably a good thing that he got an education. Unless he went for some sort of arts degree.

I think these kids that pass up first round money to go to college are nuts. They can always take classes in the offseason or down the road if baseball doesn't work out for them.

Nah, he was the 28th pick of the first round. They wanted him badly. Offered $3 mil for a high school kid.

Hit a home run, watched it then blew a kiss to the pitcher. I am looking forward to watching this kid play, but he's gotta cut this shit out.

    I would've drilled him his next at-bat.

He was drilled in the at-bat before...if that adds any context to the situation.

he's a cock. he's got it coming to him when he gets to the majors. his antics won't fly

still can't believe rendon lasted to 6 last night. with lerner the nats could be on the up...esp if strasburg bounces back.

We don't yet know exactly what Washington's plans for Anthony Rendon are, but right after the Nationals took the guy widely considered to be the best hitter in the draft, there was immediate speculation in rival front offices that he could be shifted to second base. Indeed, some of the other teams that had looked at Rendon viewed him as a second baseman in the future, because of his body type and because of the shoulder issues he's had this spring. There is debate about how much power he'll hit for, and about whether he can stay healthy -- but there is not any question, some executives say, about whether or not he's going to hit at the big league level.

Mike Rizzo says within this Dave Sheinin piece that the Nationals think third base is Rendon's best position "right now."

    Which means: Stay tuned.

Rendon and the two other Washington picks on Day 1 were Scott Boras clients. Stephen Strasburg is a Boras client, and so is Bryce Harper, and so is Jayson Werth. So little wonder that there is growing industry speculation that Prince Fielder could be a target of the Nationals in the fall, when he becomes a free agent.

What follows is speculation: Imagine what the 2013 Washington Opening Day lineup could look like, if Rendon is moved to second base, Danny Espinosa is switched to shortstop (a move that some advance scouts believe should happen) and Ian Desmond becomes a Mark DeRosa-like super utility guy:

    CF TBD
    RF Bryce Harper
    3B Ryan Zimmerman
    1B Prince Fielder
    LF Jayson Werth
    2B Anthony Rendon
    C Wilson Ramos
    SS Danny Espinosa
    P Stephen Strasburg

Little wonder that some of the Braves players chatted the other day, as they looked ahead toward the draft, about how Washington is stockpiling an enormous cache of talent and could be a team to be reckoned with very, very soon.

By the way: Harper blew a kiss to a pitcher after hitting a home run, writes Reid Cherner. From the video that's included in this piece, it looks like the pitcher who gave up the home run wasn't thrilled that Harper stood and watched his home run and stared Harper down, and Harper responded.

He's 19 years-old, that's what they do (or at least I did b/c I emulated Pedro Martinez). Either way I remember playing a Community College game with some of the best talent in my area (NY isn't really a hotbed, but still really respectable 19-21 year old kids generally), and after our coach got ejected we cheered balls and strikes like it was the 9th inning of the World Series for 12 straight innings. I threw 3-0 curveballs for strikes to a catcher who decided that was the day he wasn't going to wear a cup.

Learning to control your emotions come with time, and he will learn. I mean no one calls Ryan Braun a dick (he's leading the NL in All-Star voting), and he once ran halfway to the dugout watching a homerun against the D-Bags in his rookie year in the Bigs. He apologized, and got drilled his next time out against the Bags. He doesn't do that anymore. Hell, since I've been able to get the baseball ticket and follow the Crew for the last 4 years I've seen their young players go from that, to "untucking" after a win, running-off the field after a walk-off hit against the Cards b/c they hated the untucking, falling over when they were 10 games out of the playoff hunt in September after Prince hit a walk-off against the Giants, to just going out an playing ball real hard this year. Difference is they aren't all 23 years-old anymore, they want to win and they learned that showing up the other team doesn't help.

P.S. If The "Big Veg" goes to the Nats I'll start cutting (j/k). The Nats do look like they have righted the ship though.

I understand the dude is still young, but he's been talked to about his nonsense before (the excessive eyeblack, the posing after bombs, etc). He's still only in single A, so he has a ways to go. All I've seen/read about him just screams giant douche. Some guys never lose that (Arod, bonds, clemens, larussa, reyes, etc). I think harper is going to end up in that same ilk

some meathead type like dibble or farnsworth will put him in his place when he gets to the show. And I will enjoy every second of it.

Lerner is worth something crazy like 4 times what mark cuban is worth. dude is beyond loaded and has shown he will pour money into the nats to make them relevant. good for baseball, bad for NL East. werid how one team goes in the shitter (mets) and another kinda emerges. sports are awesome like that.

and yeah...I wouldn't expect your squad to resign the fat angry first baseman

You're probably right about Harper, but I'm just saying that there's still time. It probably will take a 97 mph fastball in the ribcage to get the ball rolling though. I don't see Prince coming back, but will enjoy the ride this year. In fact, I might take a closer look at him than Pujols given the potential ROI (he's probably 60% the player but will come at 50% of the price and is like 27 vs. Pujols "31").

lets be honest, the mets have always been in the shitter since fred coupon took over.

also am i consider a nerd for listening to the live streaming of the draft?

umm have the mets heard of this thing called a catcher? so far only drafting 1 catcher worries me a bit.

in regards to the whole Bryce Harper thing

i'm watching MLB network and Verdicci and Heart just said that this pitcher wasn't only targeting Harper but apparently was starring at the Hagerstown dugout before the game. they both applauded Harper for sticking up for his team.
Ron: I just don't feel like going out tonight

got home from my sales appointments around 1. I had the draft stream on all afternoon. Crazy how they just do it like a teleconference.

So my point is we are both nerds

Told myself I was going to stop drinking during the week to lose a few pounds, then tonight Yanks-Boston, NBA Finals and USA-Canada soccer (which I can't find on TV). Not sure I can watch these games without a few beers, ah well.
