People keep bringing up the AL Central being weak to explain what the Tigers have been doing. But, when you look at the other numbers, it shows that's not the case. The Tigers have a really good record against all teams over .500, a winning record against the AL East, a winning record against the Yankees, the Rangers, and the Rays. Et cetera. I saw this info and all the specific numbers in an article last week, I think. But hell if I can remember them.
All those numbers don't mean anything once the postseason starts.

Their winning pct. vs. the AL Central is about .690. Vs. everyone else it's .500.

And Chris is right, of course.

  • "Rookie of the Year" "Closer" Craig Kimbrell blew his 7th save of the year last night in devastating fashion. He's 4 away from Brad Lidge's 11 in 2009, what might be considered the worst year for a closer ever.

The Tigers have a couple issues going into the post season...

They are not the best at fundamentals of baseballs, they were commiting a lot of errors and don't move runners along as well as you should for a championship team. Now maybe they corrected this in the last couple months or so.

There 3rd and 4th starters are inconsistent...thats why I think in the opening round whether they have home field or not they have to start Verlander and Fister in 1 and 2...need to get a 2-0 and if it comes to game 5 you got Verlander.

06 WS they absolutely fell apart...Polanco (best hitter on the team) was "0 for"...and our pitchers could only throw to home...anywhere else seemed to be a problem.

Thats why I'm not a big fan of Jim Leyland...these issues have been around long enough...he's had plenty of time to fix them.

Yes they did...I guess there is talk of starting sherzer in game 2 if they get home field...I think they have to go with Verlander and Fister 1 and 2 to try to get a 2-0 lead and then Porcello in game 3.

  • Love the Skipper...I don't blame him for a bunch of young pitchers nerves and inexperience getting the best of them.

It better not happen again though...

After the 2006 season every baseball fan in Philly was saying "I told you so" about the Phils hiring Charlie instead of Jim Leyland.

if timmy didn't match up against kershaw so many times, maybe HE wins the cy :?

I guess you LA fuckers will have one bright spot :x . kemp, too?

    edit: from the SF Chronicle

If Clayton Kershaw wins the Cy Young Award, he might ask the trophy manufacturers to add an engraving of his foot standing on a Giant's throat.

  • Kershaw will probably take the CY. Phillies pitchers haven't racked up many wins in September with the team mostly playing out the string. Although some say Halladay still leads in some advanced metrics or something. Whatever. I don't really buy into the FIP thing, although I think one has to consider ballpark effects.

Guess we'll go for the big prize instead this year instead. 8-)

I think this is nonsense. Baseball was built on stats and have been part of the game since the beginning. I am not a full blown stats guy like some people in the Phillies thread think, I just don't get the problem with the evolution of stats. Just because people think about things differently than people did 85 years ago, doesn't make them wrong or bad. Of course they are not everything, but players have been judged on stats for over 100 years, I just don't see the problem with thinking about things a little differently.

I like Whitlock for the most part but think this is garbage. Are real sports journalists ending their columns with STFU? I think that is a bigger travesty to sports than the evolution of stats.

of course stats are a huge part of baseball and it's great to use them in a discussion...but frankly it's getting out of hand and for me, simply discussing stats (which is done quite frequently here) becomes boring...but that's just me and i understand that others are really into it

Yeah, that's terrible. I do like Toronto going back to their old logo, more or less.
