I fell in love with MMJ in 2005. In 2006 I couldnt really afford to go to shows. In 2008, I had to sell tix for 2 different shows because I ended up not being able to make those nights. When the 5 night run was announced in 2010 I nearly fell out of my chair. I've now seen 4 of the 6 of their albums from start to finish and I am so lucky to have these shows in NY .

The long wait to see them was well worth it. Show #7 for me should be coming in December.

Have to agree. I don't think MMJ could hold 20,000 people in the palm of their hands like PJ can, though I think these days PJ's act is more fitting for an arena than for the types of places MMJ are playing. I do wish PJ had the spontaneity combined with the attention to detail that MMJ has.

agreed that PJ play bigger venue's and have a lot more fans (both casual and intense) but I mean PJ can't top live something like Run Thru or Donate surely. nothing is more epic in rock then that.

I would looooovvveeee to see PJ play venues that MMJ have been playing. But the demand is still too high and PJ fans are already sensitive enough as it is People would lose their minds when they couldn't get tix to one of those shows.

I think both are as good as it gets live, but different acts. I'm psyched MMJ decided to start really mixing up their sets this year, and hopefully will continue to do it even when they are touring for an album. PJ has never had an issue playing different sets, and seem like they can bang out 2.5-3 hour sets when the want.

MMJ are definitely more of a "jam" band in a sense. The most you get from PJ is maybe a 8-9 minute Even Flow, but that's about it. MMJ and their 15-17 minute Steam Engine/Dondante have them beat there (if that's what you like)

Either way, for me at least, you can't go wrong with either band. One of my buddies asked me the other night, if both MMJ and PJ were playing the same night, in venues in the same city, with free tickets, which one do you choose? I think in that moment, as I had been watching/listening to Red Rocks so much, I went with MMJ. But my answer would probably change everyday.

I wasn't trying to make a comment on the overall popularity of both bands, b/c like you say it's not that close of a contest there.

I think there's some stuff that PJ does that we have taken for granted. I still get chills during the singalong for BetterMan, the fist pumps during Alive, the outro solo to Black, when maybe not all but a majority of the crowd is singing along to some deep album cut, or I watch a fresh video of some crazy tune that PJ has polished up and brought back from the depths of obscurity. I say all this having witnessed THE best Dondante they've ever played...check it over at archive from 8-7-2011 show.

I love MMJ, probably more than PJ for what each is doing creatively these days, and I think they choose wisely with the tunes they stretch out, I think I just have to give the nod to PJ for the overall experience. Basing my decision on which show I'd go to if both bands were playing in my town on the same night. I don't think I've seen a better arena act than PJ, but I've seen the Black Crowes do the semi-jam band rotating setlist thing a few times and imo they do it better.

I will say MMJ has owned them for studio work lately.

the idea of having free tixs to both on the same night is interesting... PJ as the live experience over the years can't be beaten.. the fact the the fans sing to every song and the friends you see whether you see them in Adelaide or New York... While MMJ is starting to get a community like the PJ one it will never reach the PJ fandom.. We as PJ superfans are intense.

the fact that I've seen PJ almost 20 times in 2 continents means I would probably prefer a MMJ show as I want to explore their live show more.. I feel like I have seen the best of PJ (spectrum, gorge etc) but the best live tours of MMJ are just around the corner.

I've seen PJ in a smaller venue, and while it was cool/amazing getting to watch them at their craft from a much better view, it didn't have that power that the arena/amphitheatre shows have. I'd say both MMJ shows topped that PJ show for me, and that was one of the VFC tour in 04 that had some spectacular setlists.

Took a while to get this convo started.

Now thinking about it each band has different things they do really great.

I don't think MMJ could match that amazing burst of energy starting a show with Go/Corduroy/Save You.

And I don't think PJ has anything like the workout on Run Thru.

Also PJ lyrics are better known (I myself don't know a lot of MMJ lyrics; I'll have to work on it). MMJ is more like strumming along than singing along.

Both have a stunning variety of songs.

As for studio output, I'd say most MMJ stuff beats up Backspacer. I'd put Avocado up with the Z's & Evil Urges of the world, but I'm a tried & convicted Avocado cheerleader.

I feel very privileged to have seen them both very recently.

Yeah, the smallest venue I've seen PJ in is an 8,000 seat "arena" (Augusta, 96) and the HOB show in '03. Both were great experiences, and like you said, getting up close is always fun. I saw MMJ from the 2nd row last summer at the BOA pavillion and that was very cool.

But, like you said, or maybe it was Zoso, you can't beat the "reunion" type feeling you get from a PJ show. I see people that I haven't seen since the last show, and the concert almost becomes secondary to the tailgating, hanging out with friends, swapping stories. I don't have that with any friends with MMJ, so that is definitely a factor. When PJ announces a tour, I can guarantee there will be 15-20 close friends that will be there with me, making it a great experience.

There is one definite thing MMJ does better than PJ... They know how to announce tours!!!

But if I were given the opportunity to see PJ or MMJ... I'd choose PJ in a heartbeat. While I walk out of the venue from a MMJ show in amazement... PJ has me walking out just in pure awe with a big cheesy grin on my face...

As far as set lists go PJ got a little redundant on the Backspacer tour with the 1st encore set, after the first show it was a great time to hit the restrooms. MMJ has been all over this tour, but I attribute that to it not being an album tour. I'm sure if there is a new album next tour you will hear a lot of cuts from it. That is why I love going to non-album shows for any band I am seeing, they can pull whatever they want for the set list. That is one reason I am tempted to hit the MMJ Port Chester shows... curious to see if they try to not repeat a song over the three night stand.

that's the one difference that PJ has over wilco, MMJ.. all my fav other bands.. it kinda sucks on that note as I love enjoying a show with friends that share the same fandom. I think it may never come for MMJ but it will get close.

WOW!!!! These guys play all their albums at T5 and they are proving that those nights weren't a fluke. They delve into their catalogue quite nicely .

If they do this at the Capitol Theatre too I am going to have trouble not buying tix for all the nights.
