Conclusion: Nickelback blow!...are not inspiring young bands

In my opinion trying to argue and debate people's tastes in music is an exercize in futility, that's like trying to say I am wrong because I like the color blue and you like red. I won't knock another persons musical tastes except to joke around.
If Nickelback is successful with what they are doing, then good for them, and good for their fans who seem to be happy with their music. I think it is also a good thing for the music industry to have bands be successful like that - more people listening to music and more people going to concerts.
Having said that I personally can't stand Nickelback, I think the singers voice is horrible, to me the music is pop song oriented and boring with quitars that have a lot of feed back to give it that metal sound. Any time I hear a song on the radio with those same qualities, it doesn't matter who they are I always say "ew, another Nickelback song" and turn it off.0 -

Pearl Jam never meant to make music for the sole purpose of selling records to the most people. They make music that has integrity and artistic achievement.
I was waiting for this agruement to come, that pj's music appeals to 'smarter people'. The thought of us belonging to a higher class of music lovers is a stupid and selfish arguement. I put it in the same lame category as the people who sits on the first rows at shows waiting for rare b-sides to wake up. This is a 'hollier than thou' attitude and it belongs nowhere. Surely not all nickleback fans are idiots for listening to them. Come on..

Nickelback sucks! My girlfriend likes them and asked me why I thought they sucked. I simply stated it is repetitive ridiculous vocals and guitar riffs that make no sense and all their songs sound the same. I don't consider them rock music just manufactured pop.2003-Tampa

I have five points that I can spell out very easily for everyone to understand:
1) Selling more records and concert tickets does not equal a "better band"
2) Selling more records does not equal "more relevant"
3) Nickelback is not what up and coming bands aspire to be like
4) 4 out of 5 "younger generation" kids will pick Pearl Jam over Nickelback (my brother is in High School in Chicago
5) Nickelback is now a Pop Band and can't be compared to alternative rock acts like Pearl Jam
Like I said before, Nickelback will have absolutely no impact on Rock Music in 25 years. Pearl Jam will be viewed as visionaries and be remembered forever.0 -

1) 100% correct
2) It does to the record buying audience and since they're reaching more people they are influencing more people
3) Maybe not Nickelback, but I know my band is the only band at the bar we regular that doesn't play Nickelback and the crap like it.
4) Yeah, in 1994
5) Shouldn't be, but they are.0 -

I propose the billboard come up with a new section for quality music. We can make it sound cool and call it quali top 10.
I went to a Radiohead concert in West Palm and I had an extra ticket for row 12. I couldn't sell it at all!! That shows you that no one cares about quality music just the music people tell them is good and is overplayed on the radio.2003-Tampa

4) is a fact (sorry, my High School brother and his friends are over all the time and they can't stand Nickelback. They think Nickelback is for old mothers. They may not buy Pearl Jam but they sure as hell respect them and love their live records)0

So you are saying that just because the 5 high schoolers that you know who prefer PJ over Nickleback means that the millions of teens feel the same way?2006: Albany

Drop1The0Leash - Do you work for Nickelback or something? I am extremely confident that most high schoolers today will prefer Pearl Jam over Nickelback.
Nickelback now appeals to 30-45 year old women and are not the cool band you think they are. Wow, you are way off man.0 -
Nickelback are like reality TV - shit but lots of people like it. There are so many ways Nickelback being more popular, tour more, pull more girls, whatever floats the boat doesn't bother me at all.
"It's like he wants us to be liked by everyone. I mean Led Zeppelin didn't write tunes everybody liked. They left that to the Bee Gees." Wayne Campbell
Or it's like burgers, you can go to McDonalds and get a McShit Sandwich - and the majority are happy to - or you can go and get one custom made to order at a quality place or do it yourself and really appreciate it as a good meal rather than a quick fix. When i was a kid, I ate at at Macca's, but luckily I learnt better - some never do.
Do I care that so many people don't appreciate a good burger? No - it's their loss but I'll continue to have my burger made with Scotch Fillet on wholegrain bread, BBQ sauce (eta brand only - am I right Aussies???) with fried egg, jarlsberg cheese, fried onions, baby spinach, beetroot and avocado. On the odd occasion I often like a slice or two of eye bacon. I hope the masses enjoy their McSlopburgers because while there is a market for crap, someone will serve it up. They're happy and having their needs met and by Macca's providing this product, I'm not having to stand behind them in line for a burger.
This is the same way I rationalise rubbish like dance/house music, Celine Dion, Britney Spears, lady gaga, creed, reality tv, and any other rubbish that could be replaced by something of a much higher quality. Those who like it are welcome to it, I'll continue to have my Pearl Jam with the works and enjoy it. Just imaginPost edited by Paul Andrews on0 -

No i fucking hate Nickleback with a passion. I just know that you are wrong, I actually know that most high schoolers prefer neither nickleback or pearl jam but other garbage such as Lady Gaga, Justin Bieder, etcPost edited by Drop1The0Leash on2006: Albany

But he asked his brothers' 5 friends? :roll:0 -
Justin Bieder, are you kidding me? The fact that you said High Schoolers prefer Justin Bieder disproves anything you say. Justin Bieder = middle school buddy.
Also, we are talking about Nickelback vs Pearl Jam.....get your facts straight bro.0 -

Just Bieber just played SNL this weekend. Hes obviously reaching many demographics there slothnuts. And I realize we are talking about pearl jam vs nickleback, BRO I'm just proving ur point #4 wrong. I would bet my life that if you surveyed every teen in the US that Nickleback would beat Pearl Jam by a large margin. Its really sad that it would work out that way but thats how it goes. Teens are so ignorant to good music its ridiculous.2006: Albany

As Ron Burgandy once said, "agree to disagree".
At the end of the day we both prefer Pearl Jam over Nickelback. (and I still bet most High Schoolers would say the same0 -

Music is all relative and subjective.. "good" is an opinion. Most people aren't looking for a deep personal connection with it. If they are happy listening to simplistic, light-hearted music sold by image and popularity, than so be it. People take music with different levels of seriousness... I wouldn't worry about what other people are listening to. It's not going to alter your life. We have choices.
To say they are ignorant, is being ignorant. Why are you so concerned with what is making them happy?
Personally, Nickelback makes me want to vomit, but some people are into that.0
