music, the best thing on earth, goes down to one simple matter: you like it or you don't. period. all the rest of anyone's thoughts or arguments are born from there (realted to harmony, inspiration, energy, romance, activism...whatever...).
and when it comes down to that (liking something or not), you just don't go arround classifying people for their musical taste...that's just as disgusting as racism. Enjoy what you like and let the others do the same.
Pearl Jam is my favourite band by far...but I mean, really by far, in every sense. And I like Nickelback too. Yeah, they make some catchy, more "commercial type" tunes, but I still like their riffs and enjoy listening to them...so what? Do I have to feel awkward because of that????
gimme a break...just let anyone listen to whatever they like...and if you don't like something in particular, you're all free souls, you just can choose not to listen to it, and that's it...big deal!
I'm sure that Ed and the rest of the guys think pretty much this way...
    peace to all!

You just wasted a lot of time writing this.........

I quite enjoy looking at http://www.allmusic.com discography on Nickelbacks load of crap. Then go to their PJ ratings. :D
It can be difficult to get both critical and huge commercial success, bands like PJ and Radiohead have the critical side while like Creed, Nickelbank have no critical value whatsoever with bland slick rubbish.
Reminds me of the very good indie film that very few will ever see while the awful blockbusters pack them in.

I was at best buy testing out an iPod dock, using my iPod. I was playing pearl jam, pretty loudly in fact. This kid who works at best buy, maybe age 17-18 comes over and says, "Smashing Pumpkins?" I said, no this is pearl jam.

He goes, "oh, never heard this song before."

    I was playing Betterman.

    Enjoy your day, everyone.

    Hopethatuchoke.......You are 100% incorrect.....again.

NickelBack are only relevant in the "general dumb, soccer mom, pop loving public" because they sell more albums as a POP GROUP. This doesn't mean that decent up and coming ROCK bands look up to them for inspiration. NickelBack will be forgotten in 20 years and will be remembered as just a skidmark on the face of rock music. Pearl Jam have already reached LEGENDARY status and will be inducted in the Rock HOF.

Nah, I am correct. Just check out the numerous people agreeing with me. Sometimes the truth hurts.

And The Beatles, Stones, Zep, and The Who are legendary. Pearl jam are just a great band who aren't legendary to the average person outside this message board. Their biggest mistake was sabotaging their career in the mid-90's. But even if they didn't do that, how many bands anymore hit the top and stay there for a prolonged period? The odds are so against that happening.

What disgusts me about Nickelback is, I assumed they would come and go like another Limp Bizkit but here we are TEN YEARS after How You Remind Me Came out and they are still selling millions of albums and selling out tours. They have had a longer period of world fame than pearl jam has. Yuck!

Hopethatyouchoke is 100% right here. Young bands, and up and coming rock musicians are mostly inspired by what is presented to them via the radio, internet, ect. At this time in music history, they are much more likely to be exposed to nickelback then they are pj. Is this wrong, sad and depressing? Yes. But its true. Just like when I was 13 and heard Alive on the radio i was inspired. PJ had their time in the limelight, but that has past. Now a days you may hear some old pj songs, maybe a few spins of the new stuff, but radio is over saturated with shit like nickelback.
To me (us) PJ is the best band to ever play. But your average 13-18 year old doesn't think this.
Hopethatyouchoke never said nickelback was better than pj.
Further back and forth a wave will break on me, today...

i dont know of any bands that would list Nickelback as an influence. plus, people who listen to rock dont listen to Nickelback. They are really no different than Avril Lavigne. they are for people who dont like rock music, but like to pretend they do from time to time. a typical Nickelback fan is most likely a Kenny Chesney fan, too.

will there be another Nickelback in the future? sure. but there always has been. but its not like the rock scene is gonna start sounding like them because they are popular, any more than they would try to sound like Miley Cyrus or Britney Spears.

A Karaoke show and a dancing show are two of the top rated TV shows so it doesn't surprise me that Nickleback is kicking PJ's ass in popularity.

Fun Fact: Matt Cameron played drums on a single by Nickleback's lead singer for the first Spiderman movie.

Trust me there are thousands of bands that list nickelback as an influence. These bands are from a younger generation so we may not know of them yet. I teach a music production seminar during the summer and there are a lot of high school kids who like nickelback. sad but true.

I'm going to assume then that the people saying they hate Nickelback for writing pop music, and saying the American public doesn't know a damn thing about REAL music and will buy any poppy crap on the radio:

    1. also refused to buy Backspacer on principle after Mike admitted in an interview that they deliberately wrote a poppy album, and

    2. took no part in the numerous threads that sprung up on The Porch charting how well Backspacer, The Fixer, and Just Breathe did on the charts (because the American public only buys crap music like Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber, right?).

Because if Nickelback only sold 30 million albums in 10 years because the public likes shitty music, then what does that say about a Pearl Jam album that went to #1 on the charts and spawned two top-5 singles on the U.S. Rock charts? Or two top-6 singles on the U.S. Alternative chart, the same chart that has seen songs by Staind, Marcy Playground, Linkin Park, Fuel, Lit, 3 Doors Down, Oasis, and... gasp... Nickelback... all spend at least 10 weeks at #1? The Fixer was even a top-10 song on the U.S. Mainstream chart, a chart that has been dominated by 3 Doors Down (record for one song with most weeks at #1), Staind, Creed, Collective Soul, Puddle of Mudd, and... once again... Nickelback.

So either the American public isn't THAT dumb - which means Nickelback isn't THAT bad - or...
And I listen for the voice inside my head... nothing. I'll do this one myself.

no it still means that Nickelback sucks and their fans are idiots. there are just enough fans of good rock and roll to put a good band on the top for acouple weeks. :)

but those bands would have never made any good albums anyway. they are just the next in a long line of shitty butt rock bands. it really is like a different genre. its not like the rock world is worse off because these crappy bands want to chase their crappy music.

its like saying Miley Cyrus would have started singing like Ani Difranco if Britney Spears didnt exist. she wouldnt. they are just pop products put together by producers in Orlando.

But not quite as popular as a pickle.

What's with all the hate on Nickleback? I heard the lead singer on an interview and he sounded like a cool guy....and they did a cool tribute to ZZ Top on Rock Honors....why should PJ fans care about Nickleback and what they do or don't do??

I think its more of just frustration. To have young kids, or whoever listening to Nickelback, a poppy "crap-rock"/corporate band who just wants to make money, instead of a band like Pearl Jam, can be a little bit, disapointing I guess. When you feel like a band like Pearl Jam has earned more respect and should be earning more money, but to see a band like Nickelback, sort of a Pearl Jam lite, or ripoff, getting that attention instead of the real thing.

9 times out of 10, anyone with any kind of musical talent most likely will not be inspired by Nickelback.. I'm sure there are tons of young kids inspired by Nickelback, but I can tell you, they aren't ever leaving their parents garage.
