I don't understand how's possible that part of american people is against a free health care. Why? why do you still have the nightmare of the socialism every time someone want to do something to help the people, all the people...equality is a wonderful thing. This is not communism this is good sense. The health care is a fundamental right, everyone, rich or poor, have the right to be cured! Please explain me the american mentality...I don't understand.

Higher taxes pretty much nails it down for me. I take home 75 to 80 % of my paycheck and I also have very good insurance.
Now is that your take home pay, or is that 20-25% include sales tax, property taxes, taxes on gas, alcohol taxes basically all the hidden taxes. Here in Canada it's estimated that we pay 40-50% taxes when you calculate all the taxes in.

That is take home pay. I(we) still pay tax on gas and alcohol and all that other stuff. No tax on groceries. My property tax is included in my mortgage, so although I pay property tax, I do not see it, I just consider as part of my house payment.

    Hey kenny?

What will this bill do for people like me, just your average, hard working, middle class American? I have health insurance through work, Blue Cross, and am very happy with my insurance. Does this new bill affect me at all? Is everything going to be the same for me? Will my employer still provide the same coverage at the same cost? Or will this new legislation change things, for people like myself?

It depends on your company. I was eating lunch after softball with my old co-workers. I still play on my old company softball team and one of my teammates is the CFO of the company. We were talking March Madness and eventually Health Insurance and this bill came up. And he told us at the table that in July when the annual registration for people in the company for health insurance comes up in July - start of their fiscal year - that premiums will be going up 17% on average and that they are switching insurance companies because if they stayed with their current company premiums would have gone up 31% because health companies are assuming this will pass and already adjusting rates.

So the bill is doing really nothing for them.

Yeah, I'm lucky. I'm locked into my insurance at the current until next January. So I'll be one of the last to see the effects of this bill. But yeah, from everything I've heard, read and people I've talked to - everyone's insurance is going up.

Yes, the bill won't do much. We need universal care.

You will be happy with your insureance until you're sick or a family member is and they deny your claim.

I have health insurance the same way and I don't expect to be adversely affected. I don't think the Democrats would sacrifice their careers on this bill if it's as bad as the Republicans say it will be. John Boehner is speaking right now and is being his usual jackass self. I've been watching C-Span online for the last 3 or 4 hours... there are some jackass Dems too, but theyre far outnumbered by the Republican ones.

The new bill will prevent the kind of nonsense the Kristof article above mentioned: recission.

Imagine getting sick with cancer, and finding out that your insurance company decided to drop you from coverage because they decided to go through your history with a fine tooth comb, found some typo or other minor oversight, then used it as an excuse to just drop you. That's called recission, and it's one of many tools these despicable insurance companies use to make profits without having to pay for healthcare.

But we should be happy about this, right? Because now, 32 million people who have no health coverage, will now have health coverage. right? And from what I have heard, read, those people will basically be paying $695 a year, for their health coverage, right?

Well, it depends on the ramifications long term. I know a lot of doctors I went to college with at UPenn who said that if universal healthcare ever passed or something similar and their salaries got cut, they'd leave the medical profession which would cause a shortage of doctors and cause a disaster in big cities with overcrowded hospitals and not enough doctors.

I did a term paper on that thesis back in college in my medical economics class 12 years ago.

The thing is by most estimates there's approximately 51 million people without medical insurance. So approximately 7% of this this country would still have no insurance.

And this bill does nothing to lower premiums or keep rate increases from coming. We're just getting tax breaks if at a certain pay level. So if you're not at that level, you're just going to see your premiums keep going up with most likely a lower quality of care in return.

So in other words, middle America, the average JOE, who is making $40-$50K a year, is going to be taking the HIT. Right? When this bill passes, people like myself, will NO DOUBT, be paying more for health coverage. But again, 32 million people, who do not have healthcare, will be given healthcare.

From what I understand, it goes back to the Senate and only needs 51 votes for approval.

The House is voting right now!

Most likely, but there are other ramifications that aren't even being addressed or considered in this bill. America has more doctors and nurses from other countries staffing hospitals than any other country in the world. And the obvious reason they come here to work is because American hospitals pay more than any other country. 3 of my aunts came to this country as nurses as did 4 cousins and one aunt as a doctor from the Philippines because US hospitals offered them a better quality of life and they got visas and eventually all became citizens. Almost 25% of medical personal in this country are from foreign countries and that will go down a lot if salaries of doctors are lowered.

Part of the reason Canada has had waiting lists is that 1/9 doctors who graduate Canadian medical schools come to the US to work.

That's what I'm more worried about. I understand the need for health reform, but I'm worried about rushing a bill that may ultimately leave medical care in general worse than the current state is.

So what happens after this vote? I assume it goes to the Senate?

From what I understand, it goes back to the Senate and only needs 51 votes for approval.

The House is voting right now!

and I assume they have those votes, otherwise they wouldn't be doing this now right?

I guess they do? we'll find out very soon. and they definitely have 51 votes in the Senate. frankly, I find it all confusing, but the House is voting on the Senate's bill, but with some extra part to it, and then the Senate just needs a simple majority to pass it thru again and to the White House? I'm not sure though

    The commies win!

I'm still totally confused about this "reconciliation bill" that has to pass now... and does the Senate need to vote again or not? Need to do some research...

They're voting on the reconciliation bill next. When that passes, the Senate gets to vote on it. If the Senate does not approve the reconciliation, the original Senate bill from Christmas Eve will still be in place with the personal give outs to certain states over other states. If the Senate does approve it, then the reconciled bill will be the one in effect and not this bill.

The Republicans can add amendments to the reconciled bill in the Senate, but the Democrats cannot. If Dems do add amendments, then the hose has to vote on it again. Don't ask me why, but apparently that's the rules of the Senate. The Republicans can also try to use the Byrd rules to try and remove certain elements from the health bill. That process and vote will not happen until Tuesday at the earliest.
