It never fails to amuse me how music can be more contentuous than politics. This thread has now taken the spectacle of monkeys throwing poo at each other.

At least it made a change from arguing about Israel/Palestine

Even worse would be where PJ did not play on this tour and why did Eddie not use this pose

I'm sure a new thread is begun every day on the Porch addressing both of these issues. Though It's hard enough for me just to keep up with the M.T.
At least this Sex Pistols thread made for a nice distraction.

I think that's kind of the point I've been making, it's all subjective. Nobody has any way of truly quantifying how many bands have been influenced by other bands, other than bands who expressly state it.
I have one mate whose favourite band of all time are Blink 182. It absolutely boggles my mind, because I personally think they are mostly rubbish. But that's his opinion and nothing I could say would change that. If however he started to trash a band who more than earned their place in rock history I would probably have something to say!
It's funny because Pink Floyd probably wouldn't even be in my top ten bands It's a matter of principle really, I don't particularly like The Beatles or Elvis, but I would defend them in exactly the same way if it was one of them being derided as unimportant compared to the Sex Pistols.
For me, the Sex Pistols were the quintessential punk band and defined all that punk was initially about. Were they the best 'musically'? Probably not but they were certainly influential both on the music scene and on the british culture.
And I'm one to add my voice that I find Pink Floyd utterly boring. I have seen them several times in their heydays (a very good friend of mine is friends with Gilmour and I went to gigs with her to keep her company, from front row, side stage, VIP, etc.). Each and every time I was bored to tears. Sorry.
holy fucking shit..... what the hell happened here while i was asleep????
im not gonna sit here and deny the influence the sex pistols had on some musicians that came after them. but what i will do is tell you that without the stooges maybe just maybe the music scene in england in the 70s would have been different. after brian james heard fun house he spent years looking for 'his iggy', finding him in dave vanian. thus the damned were born. when iggy pop played kings cross cinema in 1972, in attendance were a 16 year old john lydon and some bloke called mick jones. at malcolm mclarens shop SEX, raw power was often heard. no fun became a cornerstone of the pistols' live performances. peter hook of joy division claims metallic KO as a major influence. its also a theory of mine that metallica got their name from here as well. but keep in mind tis only a theory and i may or may not be just amusing myself with that one. iggys the idiot set the tone for such bands as siouxsie and the banshes, the birthday party and bauhaus. it became the favourite album of ian curtis, so much as that it was the record spinning when ian hanged himself. even john cale found influence in ron ashetons guitar sounds. i could go on but im starting to bore myself.
as for pink floyd....

take a good look
this could be the day

The Pistols were more influenced by The New York Dolls than by The Stooges. The sound of the Pistols is nothing like The Stooges in my opinion. That bluesy, grungy sound of The Stooges does not sound like the Sex Pistols.
