Sex Pistols for me equals bollocks. They all should have been held under water at birth if it had been known what they were going to do.

What they did was change the face of music forever and put a stick up the arse of the establishment in the process. They were the inspiration for some of the best groups of the past 40 years.

And neither the Stooges, nor the CBGB's bands ever ever had the same impact across the music scene as the Pistols did.

I don't see why that makes them the 'best band of the last 50 years'. They were just lucky enough to be the band at the top of the pack when a new era of music was emerging, plenty of artists have done that, from Elvis, The Beatles, the Stones, Zeppelin to Nirvana, Radiohead etc. If you are going to argue the line of inspiration or influence, you would always have to keep referring to the artists who came before and influenced them.

The truth is that the Sex Pistols aren't really held in high regard for their music, they're notorious for the way they behaved back when swearing on tv was seen as risqué. Musically speaking they didn't reinvent the wheel, lyrically I guess they were out spoken, but then so is someone like Eminem.

I find it hard to see how a Pearl Jam fan could find a song like this boring:

Emotional acoustic ballad, sing along chorus......

Well I've never been to see Pink Floyd live so OTT light shows really are of no concern to me, it's all about the music. I don't know if you even listened to the song I posted but like I said, it features many of the same hallmarks of a Pearl Jam song.

Of course I've heard 'Wish You Were Here' before. Yeah, it's a good song. I know there's worse bands out there, and I don't really have too much against Pink Floyd. In fact, I really like 'Piper At The Gates of Dawn'. Their later stuff just never did much for me.

The light shows were totally a new experience for the Live listener and regardless of whether they had light shows or not Pink Floyd were a far bigger revelation than anything the Sex Pistols did. Floyd had a vision and a journey which worked and it became far bigger than the band. The sex pistols were flying on their belt buckles. No vision at all and no idea if what they were making would work. Yes it did work for a while but the music is not a vision and beacon of its time now. Its now outdated while Pink Floyds music still sounds from the future.

You enjoy your intraverted snobbery without the lightshows and the greatest guitarist of his generation and most other generations for that matter.

The Pistols' relevance still echoes through the music world today.

Pink Floyd were, and remain, irrelevant beyond a certain crowd of nasal-gazing muso's.

So you keep hold of your 'Dark Side of The Moon' and I'll keep hold of my 'Never Mind The Bollox'.

I hate how punks frown upon long hair, a few solos in songs, not wearing the same clothes, not hating cops.
Isn't punk rock all about being yourself and doing whatever you want?

You reckon? I dunno, I don't hear many bands name checking them.

Given how much Floyd's record sales dwarf the Sex Pistols' I find it hard to see how you could quantify that claim. Furthermore given the lukewarm reception the Pistols' most recent reunion received compared with the near hysteria Pink Floyd received when they regrouped at Live 8, I would argue the exact opposite to your claim, and that it is the Pistols who only still appeal to a certain crowd.

I agree....the Sex Pistols may have fired the first shot to start the revolution, but the Clash kept it going.

Absolutely correct. How can anyone compare Floyd with the sex pistols? One of the most important bands in musical history vs a group of guys more famous for swearing than their musical output

The best band of the past 50 years? Are you freaking kidding me? What a load of crap.

They didn't transform music as much as the Beatles did. They only made one album, which made them technically a flash in the pan. Their members died (Sid Vicious) or faded into mediocrity soon after the band dissolved.

They're not even the best punk band of all time. That honor goes to the Clash, IMHO.

Like that means anything. The Spice Girls record sales probably dwarf Pink Floyd's.

I guess that explains the following:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sex_Pistols#Legacy
'Rolling Stone...magazine ranked the Sex Pistols #58 on its list of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time".[183] Leading music critic Dave Marsh called them "unquestionably the most radical new rock band of the Seventies."[184]

...The releases of "Anarchy in the U.K.", "God Save the Queen" and Never Mind the Bollocks are counted among the most important events in the history of popular music. Never Mind the Bollocks is regularly cited in accountings of all-time great albums: In 2006, it was voted #28 in Q magazine's "100 Greatest Albums Ever",[185] while Rolling Stone listed it at #2 in its 1987 "Top 100 Albums of the Last 20 Years".[186] It has come to be recognized as among the most influential records in rock history.[179][187] A 2005 Allmusic critique describes it as "one of the greatest, most inspiring rock records of all time".[188]

There are plenty of punk bands I'd place above The Clash.
The Clash mean nothing to me.

Actually though, maybe I shouldn't have said 50 years. I should have said 30 years. I think The Doors have a sound claim to my 50 year prize. 8-)

Like who? X? Wire? The Damned? The Velvet Underground? The Ramones? The New York Dolls?

No other punk band was as successful as the Clash, and they're already in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Oh yeah, the Doors mean nothing to me. Anyone that doesn't say the Beatles were the greatest band of the last 50 years is delusional.

You're overlooking their seminal first album, then.
