matt bellamy owns the guitar. eddie.... doesn't
just to watch matt play is reason enough to say muse is an awesome live act.

Mike and Stone provide more than enough guitar action. Even if Mike didn't play his jumpin around is entertaining as hell.
  • Did u go to the UC with Silversun Pickups? I want to see SSPU so badly, havent gotten the chance when they have been in Chicago.

I love SSPU but couldn't bring myself to pay 50 bucks for an opening band. I'll catch them at the Middle East the next time they come to Boston. I have Swoon spinning on the turntable now.

I don't even like their music all that much but Muse live is amazing.

I've seen Paul McCartney, MMJ, Ween, Drive by Truckers and others put on better shows than PJ. PJ is still my favorite band and when they're feeling it the shows are hard to beat. The two EV solo show I saw rank ahead of most of the PJ shows I've been to also.
This show, another show, a show here and a show there.

NYE at MSG was amazing too. They are one of few on par live with PJ. Absolutely.
MMJ and PJ ar probably the only two bands id stand in the rain for four hours to watch. Never for Muse and that guy's whiny voice, though.

Muse is the best live act in the world if you're into lights, lasers, heavy riffs, theatrics and incredible vocal ranges

    muse-live-tour-2009.jpg

    25_muse_lg.jpg

Pearl Jam is the best live act also but for much different reasons...these 2 shall never cross paths..people who say they hate Muse and they suck, etc are obviously allowed to voice their opinion but excuse me if I completely disagree..if you dont like it thats ok..you dont have too..but to say they arent as good as PJ live without experiencing a Muse show is completely ignorant.

Oh and btw...they are each headlining one night at a German festival this summer...both bands seem to think very highly of each from what I hear

Oh...and if you consider Matts voice "whiny" then you should go and talk to a voice coach...they will set you straight..Matts voice is one of the most clearly defined ranges in the history of rock..this is fact

i saw muse at the tdbanknorth garden. i haven't listened to them before this concert but some i've heard through radio/rb/gh stuff so i wasn't going in blind and i like the concert a lot. thinking about it now i don't think all the stage stuff was necessary but cool nonetheless. i wouldn't agree that they're better than pearl jam live though

Muse really blew me away live.

In all fairness, Muse and PJ have different styles. Everyone who listed their "better than PJ live" bands seemed to be in similar categories. And were mostly old, traditional bands. Muse's whole show is indeed a show; everything is coordinated, planned, and executed brilliantly. Pearl Jam has more of a raw style, bringing it back to the basics. You will never see a spontaneous set list switch at a Muse concert. You will never see Pearl Jam destroy every track beautifully like Muse can.

NEWSFLASH: Eddie cannot sing the first three PJ CDs anymore. It's just the truth. Obviously Muse isn't as old but Matt Bellamy can sing all of his songs beautifully, across keys/pitches, and hold long, powerful notes. It is awesome. Lord knows I love Eddie to death but his vocals cannot hold a candle anymore. He can still sing but the power is gone. I don't care if you like the way Bellamy sings or not, if you can't admit his vocals are better musically than Eddie's today than you obviously have a strong bias.

NOW after I have raved about Muse for a bit... here are the negatives. Their show does not change much. I saw them twice this tour, once in Italy and once in Baltimore, and it was 90% the same. Now, it was still awesome, but the variety is slim. They switched a few tracks and that was it. Lights, video projections, most of the song order, all the same. I still liked it, but show #1 was epic and show #2 was above average. Pearl Jam you get 60-75% the same I would say, plus lots of priceless Eddie chatter. The declining enjoyment from multiple shows is a much slower pace with Pearl Jam than with Muse. If I could draw a graph, with multiple shows across the horizontal axis and enjoyment (0-100) on the vertical, Pearl Jam's curve would start at 80 and decline slowly, while Muse's would start at 95 and plummet.

    Summary:
    Better overall show: Muse
Better "live" (spontaneous, less planned) show: Pearl Jam
    Better Vocals: Muse
Better Show to Attend Multiple Times: Pearl Jam

    The rest depends on preferences.

everything you just said, i agree 100%. i am so happy to find other people FINALLY admitting that ed's voice blows ::cough::quit smoking::cough::

i have gotten shit on a LOT of times on here for my liking and praising of muse. they are by far the most amazing band live. but like you said, they do not diversify their shows so its pretty much a one and done per tour for them, whereas i like going to multiple pj shows to get a wide variety of songs. oh...and i am gutted i couldnt catch muse with silversun pickups (another one of my fav bands) this year...

    have you listened to Backspacer?

    F YOU!
Backspacer is my favorite pj album its the best

I have to agree with the original poster, lyrically it just is not as strong as other Pearl Jam albums.
And I love Backspacer too, but even if I do, I can realize/see that.

I have seen many bands that were great live, awesome even, besides Pearl Jam... Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails, Peter Gabriel, Faith no More, R.E.M., Beck

Muse were really tight when I saw them, but I don't think they make my top list.
Bands which I hated live: Oasis. (Just turned me off them completely)

I just saw Muse on Friday night at the 'secret' show at SXSW. I should say that it was my first time and only have been enjoying their stuff for the past year or two. Still - as much as I was looking forward to the first live experience with them, I just wasn't that blown away. They can't touch PJ or Radiohead shows that I've seen. It was fun, and seeing a band that can fill wembley, MSG, etc in a ~1400 person venue from like 10 ft away is not something I'll forget anytime soon...but still...just not as good.

I saw Muse last night at Wembley Stadium, London. It was definitely one of the best live shows I've ever seen. Comparing them with PJ is a bit pointless, they're both completely different bands.

I've heard mixed reports about them live, but would like to see them in the future. Prefer PJs music though.

nope. it's just the three of them on stage. unless you count the guy doing some technical work with the sound (i don't consider him a musician, though). matt bellamy owns the guitar. i bought their haarp cd not too long ago and it's one of the best live cds i own.

not to mention his voice is fucking epic on stage

ps i am aware that there are trumpet players on stage during this video...

Now I that I have seen them, my opinion of them has changed, definitely for the better. I've seen a lot of bands over the years, but they are simply phenomenal live and would have to be right up there for the best act I've ever seen. Didn't think I'd ever see a band I like nearly as much as PJ but in all honesty I'd have to admit that they give them a run for their money. And imo, they run rings around U2 (who I saw back in '06). Can't believe 3 guys can produce such a wall of sound, and if theatrics and a magnificent light show are your thing then they've got it over just about every band on tour today. Yes, they play with extra guys on stage but not for the whole show. I'm now heavily into them, and have bought all their cd's within the last couple of weeks, including Haarp which is amazing. And to agree with the above poster, Bellamy's got an incredible voice and can play guitar (and piano) with the best of them. They seem to cop a lot of unjustified flak from people who've never seen them live. Imo, the three of them would have to be one of the tightest units on this planet and are one of the best live bands around today.

You're welcome to your opinion. Opinions make debates what they are. I know they use backing tapes but I wonder how much. Queen did too. I don't really care. Still like the sort of music both bands have come up with, and enjoy the live experience. Saw Queen years ago in the 80s, and have always been a fan of theirs. I still think I'd like Muse without the theatrics, cos I think their music's great and they do it well live. Kinda like Kiss without their makeup, apparently they were still hot live without it (not that I ever saw them, I'm just using them as an example). I agree with what Nuffingman says, though. Comparing PJ and Muse is pointless because they're so different, I'm just happy that such bands exist cos they're so much better than half the crap coming out today.

i aimed my backing tracks comment at your wall of sound comment. sure there are places where morgan nicholls would pick up the slack, reducing the need for backing tapes... but there are places where even he cant compensate. and dont get me wrong, i am a fan of MUSE, though admittedly lately theyve lost me a little... and personally i dont care if MUSE, or any other performers for that matter, use backing tapes. i was just acknowledging their use and their contribution to that wall of sound.
