Flagg, like usual I agree with everything you said on this topic.

It's become a fucking joke. They've made it clear that they will play anywhere if you pay them a boatload of dough (ACL). Skipping TX to play 2 shows in Missouri is laughable.

I will actually be in the NE when they are up there but I'm tired of going out of my way and traveling all over.

I thought when they put their own record put they would finally care about selling records, which you do by touring. Everywhere. Their strategy seems to be hit the coasts and make a ton of cash then go on vacay in Europe, aus/nz or Hawaii.
ive defended them time and time again , but this is probably the most dissappointed ive ever been in them. quick cash grabs in the same old places then back home. all the fans out on 'the frontier' who stuck by them for years without a show get left out again. what happened to the Touring Band? guess they got old :(

    wow. you're a funny guy.

i'm not sure what to make of it.....it sucks that they aren't coming back on this tour. with every tour they announce, i feel that it is less & less likely that they'll ever come back down here. maybe in the Fall? probably not.

maybe we'll go see my side of the family in KC and catch that show....doubtful, but maybe. this announcement bummed me out for a bit.

ACL was great, don't get me wrong....i'm glad that they played. but i want what every other texas PJ fan wants...a FULL PJ SHOW.

  • up until this tour, they had skipped Ohio since 2003 (not even a festival). Columbus and Cleveland are major cities too. I feel for you, Texas, but they can't make everybody happy. And I do think there is something to it. I don't know if it's political or not, but the one city in Texas that they have played is Austin, and that's probably the only even remotely liberal area in the state. Could be?

I've wondered that, but I just can't even fathom that to be the case. If it were, then I'd have to say fuck 'em.
  • If they don't play Texas/southeast shows because of politics that's very shallow and pathetic.

yeah, but then again, it's their band. if you had your own band, would you go play in an area where you strongly disagreed with 80-90% of the population? It's rhetorical, perhaps you would go collect that paycheck anyway. But the bottom line is, if they are only doing a handful of US dates, they have to be selective (obviously). i'm sure texas and SEC country will get some shows soon.

    Me too.

But it isn't the case and people just don't want to understand that. Since 2003 they have been back to the place that booed the shit out of them (Denver), the swing states that won the election for Bush twice (Ohio and Florida), South Carolina (about as red state as you can get), Salt Lake City (sorry SC, THIS is as red state as you can get) and on and on. But whatever.

Oh, and Dallas and Houston are both Democratic. But do you honestly sit there and think they have a little map with red and blue areas and that's how they plan it out??

If they won't play an entire state with the largest cities in the country because of one insignificant human being that lives in one city then doesn't that kind of make them pussies?

I'm thinking of driving up to KC, hitting that one and then the 20th anniversary show and that's probably it.

well its really only like 60% (red and blue states are never really that solidly red and blue), and most of those probably dont care too much either way.

im at a loss to explain it, other than travel costs would be cheaper in the northeast than anywhere else, but even thats pushing it. maybe they just dont think these things out very much and just play wherever they played last year plus a couple other places.

That makes no sense whatsoever, you do realize that? If they wanted to play for the money, they would play cities like Houston or Dallas, and jack up the ticket prices. They could sell out the venues and laugh at all the right wing nut jobs in the lone star state for making them rich. Choosing to not play shows in a state is not an indication that they are greedy. Just the opposite, actually.

Face it dude, all this bands tours for is money now. They make a KILLING in the northeast, every show will probably sell out and you figure each show is pretty close together, where as in the south we are spread out. I'm not justifying there decision at all, it pisses me off just as much you. I had money set aside to see the band, but I'm not traveling anymore if they are just gonna keep playing the same venues everywhere, I'll go see bands that actually appreciate their entire fanbase. And dont tell me that they just played Austin city limits and bonnaroo, not the same when you are surrounded by people who aren't fans of the bands. The show in Columbia 08 and Tampa 08 were both amazing, why not give us about 10-12 shows down here? Every other band does. Even U2.

it has nothing to do with people disagreeing with the band on politics guys, if that were the case the band would never play the state of New York ever again because of what happened in Uniondale in 03, its money, face it, the band is playing only places they KNOW they will sell out. They wouldn't sell out Dallas or Houstan, or anywhere in the south probably, so rather than switch to smaller venues they just decide not to play here at all.

last time PJ toured the south was in 03, Houstan wasn't sold out, not sure about Dallas but neither was any stop in the south, but I'm sure they could sell more tickets now that it has been almost 7 years since a show.

Dallas and Houston are both massive cities. Even assuming Houston is 70% conservative, that still leaves THREE MILLION PEOPLE who lean liberal who would go to see them, not the mention the (gasp!) conservatives who love PJ (like my wife). They could play New Orleans, Houston, and Dallas and comfortably sell out all three shows (if you think New Orleans is conservative simply because it's in the South, you clearly haven't been there. It's also not exactly a ghost town anymore - Katrina was five years ago). Texas is no more/less conservative than it was in the 90s when the band played there, and the same goes for my adopted state of Louisiana.

As for the $$ involved in touring... putting aside for a moment that touring is how bands MAKE money, it isn't like they're bringing the Rolling Stones' stage with them. Their costs can't be that great in comparison to other bands who tour around the clock. Some people on this board mock Dave Matthews Band, but consider this: They've been around almost as long as Pearl Jam (their first album dropped in 1994), and when they released their seventh studio album last year they went on a 53-date North American tour that saw them play "metropolises" like Pelham, AL, Albuquerque, NM, Cincy, East Troy, WI (two shows), Noblesville, IN, and Des Moines, IA - while also playing Madison Square Garden, Houston, Dallas, Boston, Vegas, Palm Beach, and three nights at The Gorge. Oh, and Ed's only two years older than Dave.

I think these days if you live outside of the Northeast you should only expect to see them sporadically. That's gotta sting for the state of Washington that's seen just four full shows since Benny Hall in 03 (for the sake of comparison, Australia - not a cheap place to get to - has had 17 shows in that same span).
And I listen for the voice inside my head... nothing. I'll do this one myself.

another thing, in the northeast pearl jam can charge crazy prices, and still sell out, look at Boston, $74 for EVERY SEAT in the entire arena, and they will def sell it out. There is no way they could pull that off down here, no way people down here would pay $74 to sit in nosebleeds.

So true. They would sell out in Dallas and especially Houston. I remember back in the day when they would play two shows in H-town back to back ('00 I think). The last time they played in TX ('03) in SA it sold out and so did the show the very next day in Houston. They would sell out if they came to TX, no doubt about it. I just don't know why they keep going around it. Prior to ACL I saw them in Vegas ('06), that was fun but it's one of those things that you can't do often. I'm looking at the dates right now and I can't make it to any of them. The cost of traveling is just to much. That ACL show felt more like an abbreviated Pearl Jam show. They only played 3 new songs, Unthought Known, The Fixer and Got some. It was fun but they had to stop playing by 10pm. Only 22 songs, (I know I shouldn't complain about it) shortest PJ show I've ever gone to.

But you can't really fault them for that, can you? If they can play 5-6 shows in the Northeast, that does not include a lot of travel, and is guaranteed to sell out, why wouldn't they do it. As opposed to going to places in the South, spread out, and not guaranteed to sell out.

Don't get me wrong, I feel bad for fans that live in places that haven't had a show in 6-7-8 years. It sucks. I never forget to realize how spoiled fans in the Northeast are. I just think this is the way it's going to be from now on. 10-15 shows per mini-tour. I assume their thinking is that if they are going to leave their families for a month, it damn well better be worth it to them. Sucks, but it's probably reality.
