The Giants and Tim Lincecum’s people have exchanged arbitration figures. According to Jon Heyman at CBSSports.com, Lincecum is seeking $21.5 million and the Giants have offered $17 million, which break the records for the most money sought and offered in arbitration for a player not yet eligible for free agency.

In 2001, Derek Jeter asked for $18.5 million from the Yankees, who offered $14.25 million. They never went to a hearing, but rather settled on a 10-year, $189 million contract.

We just got off the phone with vice president of baseball operations Bobby Evans, who said, “I’m overall optimistic we can find common ground without a hearing room.” And given the numbers that they exchanged, there is reason for optimism. that spread is even smaller than in 2010, when Lincecum and the Giants were $5 million apart.

When I asked about the enormousness of the numbers we’re talking about, and how he feels when he jots those numbers down, Evans said, “I usually leave off the final three zeroes because it’s easier to calculate on an Excel spreadsheet.”

There is still plenty of time for the Giants and Lincecum to work out a deal, long term or short term. Hearings will be held in Florida starting Feb. 1. Two years ago, they agreed to a two-year deal while sitting in the hearing room waiting for the arbitrators to arrive.

In the past two days, the Giants reached agreement with arbitration-eligible players Angel Pagan ($4.85 million), Melky Cabrera ($6 million) and Santiago Casilla ($2.2 million). They almost certainly will reach deals with three other arb guys, Sergio Romo, Nate Schierholtz and Pablo Sandoval, some as early as today.

Evans also reiterated that the Giants are probably done signing players to big-league contracts. Any starters or outfielders they bring in would be on minor-league contracts with spring invites, a la Ryan Vogelsong last year. He mentioned former Atlanta Brave Gregor Blanco, a minor-league invitee, as a possible outfield candidate.

Wow, big numbers right there, although well deserved. Ok Giants, let's lock his ass down for good!

I agree, I think part of that goes back to the work ethic of his father. He wants to feel like he works hard enough for his pay and that he has earned it.

    Here's a valid question

what is the combined offensive contribution of said lumber

Even after a mathematical equation of epic proportions, it is still just a tad more than that of a certain stick of Howards

    2010 NLCS

    Cody .350 BA, 3 HR, 5 RBI

    Andres .350 BA

Howard .318 BA, 0 HR, 0 RBI, 12 strikeouts......one of which I will never forget. And, oh yeah, $25M per year

hell, Panda barely played and had 2 RBI in the NLCS :shifty:

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Barry Zito made a slight change to his delivery this winter he hopes will help him rebound from an injury-plagued season.

During the offseason, he worked on bending his front leg to get lower to the ground and speed up the momentum the ball gains traveling to the plate.

so we're talking what? an 83 mph fastball? :x

  • Seems like a lot of questions surrounding this team. Panda at 3rd feels like the only sure thing.

SS - Can Crawford hit around 250? Or will Theriot end up being the answer.

2B - How long before Freddy gets hurt? Fontenot probably ends up seeing a lot of playing time here.

1B - Can Belt win the job, is Huff in shape, what about Pill, will Posey end up playing here as well?

OF - Can these guys (Pagan, Melky, Nate) hit a combined 30 HR's? I doubt it, plus we have zero depth, unless you count Huff and Belt.

C - How many games can Posey catch? Why is Whiteside still on the team? What about Stewart and is Sanchez a longterm answer if Posey ends up at 1st?

SP - Obviously solid, wish they would sign Cain soon though, don't need the distraction following him and the team all season.

RP - Doubt we will ever see Wilson throw 98-99 like two years ago, can he learn to be a crafty closer? Romo seems ready to step in.
