Giants catcher Buster Posey has reached a significant benchmark in his arduous comeback from a season-ending leg injury. For the first time since his May 25 home-plate collision, Posey is in a squat, catching pitchers' bullpen sessions.

More significant, Posey is catching bullpens a bit ahead of schedule, boosting hope that he will be ready to play by spring training and be the Giants' starting catcher when they open the 2012 season in Arizona on April 6.

"I would say that starting to catch 'pens has been a confidence booster," Posey said in a text Tuesday. "I'm very happy with the progress I've made up to this point."

Posey has been rehabbing six days a week at the Giants' minor-league spring training complex in Scottsdale, Ariz., and will stay until the first week of November, when he goes home to Georgia.

The 24-year-old continues to regain strength and athletic conditioning 4 1/2 months after the collision with Florida's Scott Cousins broke his left leg and tore ankle ligaments that have required two surgeries to repair.

Last month, Posey began catching pitches delivered by a machine. On Friday, he caught balls thrown by a pitcher for the first time and did so again Tuesday, for about 10 minutes. The pitcher was Michael Kickham, a lefty who started 21 games for Class A Augusta, Ga., in 2011.

The medical staff had said Posey would be catching live bullpens by Nov. 1, though head trainer Dave Groeschner termed that a conservative estimate and said Posey actually is about a week ahead of schedule.

"He's been feeling good and progressing well, so there was no reason to wait," Groeschner said, adding that Posey will begin taking batting practice on the field in a few days - another milestone.

Soon to be known as "washed up former closer" Brian Wilson. At least he's cashing in while he's still got it. Probably next year it will be Valverde or the Cardinals guy (Motte I think).

Dude I know that. Ever hear of a guy named Brad Lidge? Same thing. Just saying. For the most part with relief pitchers it's all about catching lightning in a bottle, with one notable exception in the Bronx.

    rod beck.
....will always be a beloved part of SF Giants lore. he was before nen. ;)

On Sept 17th and 18th, 1997, the Los Angeles Dodgers came to San Francisco to play a two-game series at Candlestick Park. The Dodgers were leading the National League West with a record of 84-67. The Giants were in 2nd place with a record of 82-69; 2 games behind. The Giants won the first game 2-1 behind lefty Kirk Reuter. In that contest, Barry Bonds hit a two run homer in the 1st inning for the Giants  while Raul Mondesi hit a solo shot in the 5th for the Dodgers. Beck did not pitch in the game.

On September 18, he came into the game in the top of the 10th with the score tied 5-5. As the season had progressed, Beck had lost his closer's job to Roberto Hernandez. In fact, Beck had blown a save three days earlier in Atlanta while trying to close that game. He had given up 4 earned runs in just 2/3 of an inning. Beck got into trouble immediately by giving up consecutive singles to Mike Piazza, Eric Karros, and Raul Mondesi. With the bases loaded, nobody out and the crowd booing loudly, manager Dusty Baker came out to talk to Beck, who was obviously struggling. Baker told Beck, "You're the guy."

Baker left Beck in, and Beck proceeded to strike out Todd Zeile looking at an inside-corner fastball. When he got pinch hitter Eddie Murray to bounce a splitter into an inning-ending double play, the crowd of 52,188 went crazy. Two innings later, Giants reserve catcher Brian Johnson led off with a home run to left field giving Beck a 6-5 win. The Giants, now tied with the Dodgers for the division lead, would go on to win the Western Division crown.

one of the great moments in the history of a franchise that hasn't had all that many (2010 aside).

S.F. Giants' ex-payroll manager to plead guilty

Henry K. Lee, Chronicle Staff Writer

SAN FRANCISCO -- A former payroll manager for the San Francisco Giants is poised to plead guilty to charges that she embezzled more than $2.2 million from team accounts, court records show.

Robin O'Connor, 41, of American Canyon had originally been charged in July in U.S. District Court in San Francisco with stealing at least $1.5 million from June 2010 to June of this year.

But federal prosecutors said in court records filed Thursday that she is now suspected of stealing an additional $700,000. O'Connor has been dismissed from the baseball team's staff.

O'Connor was charged with one count of wire fraud in a document known as an information, which in federal court typically signifies that a defendant intends to plead guilty.

Her attorney, Assistant Federal Public Defender Rita Bosworth, has not responded to requests for comment.

Authorities said O'Connor carried out the alleged scheme by making numerous electronic fund transfers "from a bank account controlled by the Giants to her personal bank accounts."

One of those transfers was in the amount of $286,427 on Sept. 15, 2010, according to federal prosecutors.

Upon conviction, O'Connor must forfeit "a sum of money equal to the gross proceeds obtained as a result of the offense," prosecutors said in the court filing without elaborating.

She must also forfeit $565,703 already seized from three Wells Fargo Bank accounts over which she has signature authority and surrender a 2011 BMW 335 and a 2011 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor, an off-road pickup truck, authorities said.

O'Connor allegedly used stolen funds to pay for the vehicles.

As a payroll manager who earned a base salary of $80,000 a year, O'Connor processed direct deposits for salaries and expenses into the bank accounts of employees, including players, authorities said.

The Giants have declined to name which players or other employees were affected.

hell....$2.2M.....that could have paid zito for three weeks :x
