I was going to ask the question if using steroids back in the 90's in MLB violated any rule, reg, or policy. I thought that it didn't. It wasn't until it became socially unacceptable that baseball finally stepped up and implemented a policy that other sports like professional cycling have been doing for years. Everyone has always criticized professional cycling as a drug sport, but that is only because there have been policies against it and they do such heavy policing and testing that people get caught. In baseball, I would bet my life savings that EVERYONE from managers, coaches, owners, and yes the Commissioner were very well aware that MOST (in my opinion) players were doing something to enhance performance and probably encouraging and even providing it somehow. The blame should be shared equally by all of them that fostered and encouraged it. I'm sure some players did not participate, but I would bet they are in the minority. In any sport or industry where large sums of money are at stake people will do what they can to "make it." This does not mean that I think McGwire has no responsbility, but I do think it is unfair that he is being singled out. Especially when the hypocritical managers, owners, and the commissioner say that what the players did was wrong like they knew nothing about it.
As to him obtainging steroids illegally, how would anybody know? All that it takes is some doctor to write a prescription. Complain about a inflamed tendon, sinus infection, ec. and you can get the stuff. Don't fool yourself and think that there are no physicians out there that would provide the steroids. There are physicians that do nothing but provide "medical advice" to professional sports, whether it be baseball, tennis, cycling, swimming, etc.The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way it treats its animals. While he was the first to really come public with some of the behind the scenes stories, and many of his accusations are proving to be true ... this guy is a complete lugnut whom I have zero interest in listening to."You're one of the few Red Sox fans I don't mind." - Newch91

as a kid Mark and Jose were the reasons I got into baseball, as a youngster. And then in the home run chase of the late 90's, when sports werent of interest to me anymore, I would watch the news everyday hoping to hear Mark hit another home run.
Mark has always seemed the person most deserving of sympathy in this whole mess. Bonds is a jerk. He doesnt and didnt give one iota if some kid took steroids in order to emulate him (bonds). Mark on the other hand has always seemed abolutely heartbroken over this, what he did, the effect it had. He seems heartbroken, and has for years. Thats the difference. I think that is important, and its not a small difference. On one hand you have the Bonds and the palmeiros and whatevers of the world, who are on their high horses, and then you have Mark who has, for at least a decade been haunted by these allegations that he admitted were true yesterday.
I have heard the statement that "steroids dont make you hit homers" made multiple times, and by people much more knowledgeable about baseball than I. My uncle who has been a baseball fan his whole life, sort of says the same thing. My feeling on it is this: Mark, Barry, A-Rod, they didnt take stereoids to hit base hits, or to run faster or to steal more bases. They took the steroids to hit homers. Thats where the big bucks and the fame and the SI covers are. The idea that anyone would take steroids to hit more base hits is absurd and I think anyone can come to this conclusion.
Barry Bonds on the other hand, I doubt will ever come out like Mark just did. He just doesnt care. Bonds tarnished the game way more than Mark ever did. Bonds still believes he did nothing wrong and still believes he is the home run king. That to me is gross.0 -
one thing that begs an answer, is the issue of current steroid use in st louis. One can assume some players are still using, that many still are using in MLB. What will happen when they use in front of Mark? What will he do? Will he expose them? confront them?0
-
its sad. thats the take away message folks. This entire era, the steroid era is so encompassing and so engrossing, there were SO MANY big names who took steroids, who broke records with steroids.
I have mantained this for years, seems like when you weed out all the steroid users, when you take them out of the equation, maybe the best home run hitter who was and is clean is Griffey Jr0 -

I take a different angle.
What steroids truly did was make these guys healthy, it prolonged their career, it enabled them to come back night after night in better condition. It kept them healthy.
McGwire stated he was ready to retire after the '96 season because he was injured so much. Steroids allowed all those muscle pulls and strains to heal faster and not become muscle tears and prolonged stints on the DL.
This is why there were a lot of good middle relievers in the late 90s early 2000s. They were using. It's just that no one cares about middle relievers and their stats, but, as someone who follows stats closely, there were some ridiculous numbers being put up by these pitchers ... and the number of games they played per year were huge.musicismylife78 wrote:Barry Bonds on the other hand, I doubt will ever come out like Mark just did. Bonds, and Clemens, have a vested interest not to come out as they could be brought up on federal perjury charges ... so, we will doubtfully hear from them unless they bargain for immunity."You're one of the few Red Sox fans I don't mind." - Newch91

I do not think many, if any, folks are still using steroids in the MLB, they are easy to test for.
Some HGHs may be used ... but, with the first strike = 50 game suspension, I'm guessing there is a LOT less usage than you think."You're one of the few Red Sox fans I don't mind." - Newch91

but thats the whole point. No one knows. When you have this many people using, using in the past, it sort of puts a cloud of suspicion over ALL players reguardless of if they used or didnt use. Selig is another villain in the story. Anyone really think he gave a damn that players were using during the home run race? Why would his opinion on the issue change? Selig has the power to clean up the game, and really has done little to nothing to rectify the situation. He looked the other way. He had a real chance to do something the other year when Bonds was chasing Aaron. He could have come out and said "we know Bonds is using so his breaking of a record will be meaningless". Instead he says nothing, congratulates Bonds and shows up at Bonds games. Wow.
The point is, homers equal power, fame, and glory. More press coverage for baseball. More print time, more air time, more attendance at games, more money pouring in. It seems few people in baseball had squabbles over this fact, the fact that this was essentially blood money or tainted money. Selig, the owners, the players who used, the players who didnt use but knew, and didnt say anything all share some blame in this debacle0 -

I am bitterly angry about this. I remember that summer and spent many nights watching the home run chase. Excuse my language, but how the fuck does bud Selig still have a fucking job. All of this shit happened under his watch.
Fuck him and MLB. They won't get one penny from me this year.
I totally agree with your take on Selig but I have zero anger over this. It is fucking entertainment. You didn't suspect in 1998? Hell, they were chanting "steroids, steroids" at Canseco 10 years earlier.Ledbetterman10 wrote:
The guys who drive me nuts are Roger Clemens, A-Rod, and Barry Bonds. These guys have all the baseball talent in the world and COULD have made it to the top without cheating. But because they have such big egos, they cheated so they definitely WOULD be on top. These guys are comparable to a guy like Bernie Madoff. He had all the money he needs but still ripped people off.
To a point, I agree.... but Bonds supposedly told Griffey he was going to start on the roids because of the irritation he felt with that little pissant Sosa  hitting 60+ HRs. To me, LaRussa was at ground zero when the Oakland A's opened Pandora's box in the late 80's. TLR is a lying, sanctimonious POS. It wasn't right, but was only natural for everyone to jump onboard.musicismylife78 wrote:One can assume some players are still using, that many still are using in MLB. without.a.fucking.doubt they are still using....HGH. They still use but not so blatantly.jimed14 wrote:Some HGHs may be used ... but, with the first strike = 50 game suspension, I'm guessing there is a LOT less usage than you think.
dude, there's NO test. Unless you go with the Manny Ramirez female fertility drug combo, you won't get caught. HGH, by itself, will never get you busted.

EXACTLY!! if it wasn't obvious to someone that mcgwire and sosa were roiding in '98, you just weren't paying attention...it was still fun to watch which is all sports should be watched for...FUNimalive wrote:P.S. you haters can continue to hate, but the FEDS need to give up on my boy Barry!keep up the fight

I just saw on ESPN where the FBI had McGwire's, Canseco's "and others" names in 1993 when they busted a Detroit area steroid ring. Since "the FBI doesn't usually go after USERS" (unless your name is Bonds
), the FBI just gave the names to the head of MLB Security. Where was the follow up on that? There was none. Selig knew, the managers knew, the GMs knew, no one cared. Very, very few people uttered a peep. Everyone was making money. Hell, even sportswriters knew but, back then, they wanted to put Mark and Sammy on the cover of SI and, now, they want to take the moral high ground.
Kudos to the FEW journalists who continue to ask "Where was MLB during that whole time?"
Meanwhile, Bud Selig continues to draw an $18M/yr salary for his "leadership."If I had known then what I know now...

The always great Joe Pos....
"I didn't agree with or even follow everything McGwire said, but I never thought that was the point. I never thought apologizing was an Olympic sport with stoned-faced people judging how straight his toes were pointed and if he made too big a splash. McGwire is not a public speaker. He's not a philosopher. He's not a politician. He is not even an especially open person. He is a guy who dedicated his life to hitting baseballs hard. Expecting him to become Hamlet doesn't seem fair."

I must point out though, for once Joe Pos is a bit contradicotry since he absolutely ripped Arod for his apology.0 -
How about this?
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/12/sport ... ss&emc=rss
The one-day plan — coordinated over the past month by Ari Fleischer, a former White House press secretary who runs a crisis-communications company, and the St. Louis Cardinals, who recently hired McGwire as their batting coach — contrasts with last year’s roll-out of Alex Rodriguez’s steroid admission.0 -
I'm sick of hearing about it every year. It's like they're putting salt on the wound right before spring training is about to start.
What also gets me down is that when I was 8, I collected the entire 1987 topps baseball card set (wood boarder) just so I can have the MM Rookie card. Those are childhood memories that are now meaningless0 -

The real Mcgwire rookie was in the 85 Topps Traded set, wearing the Team USA uni..... That thing was worth some decent jack.
On a side note: I got the Cardinals team set that year(87) and for a few days Mike Laga was my favorite players, b/c he hit one out of the old Busch Stadium, down one of the lines. In the 87 set it looks like he is wearing a pink jersey.0
