  • Man? Everyone thinks I'm a guy. I'm a 19 (pushing 20) year old girl who just gets a little strange when she gets hungry. I love that song. :D

That's great that they're both interested in touring for PJ! I move that we start an official petition here to get them as the band's official interpreters! Post examples of their work, get signatures. :D

I've been thinking, would it help if PJ had the interpreters on the video screens? Each side would have one screen with the guys and one with the interpreters. I have a lot of time to think during my geology class. Really bad/boring teacher who's only 21. When I read your description of SEE, it reminded me of him.

On a side note, I'm trying to get into an impacted program to become a graphic designer like Barry & Coby (who I got to meet at OLF), Jeff, and Brad. Pre-majoring right now. Only 40 of about 120 will get in when we apply in the spring. Until then, they're trying to kill some of us off.

I've read through all of this and it is very enlightening. I guess a sign language interpreter is much like any oral language interpreter. I used to do simultaneous translation for the EU and I had my specialist subject, therefore knew the ins and outs of the subject, all the jargon, etc. I interpreted during discussions on that subject and no other. It took a lot of training/knowledge to be able to do so (all this during working hours, so paid). I can only assume that if you want someone to interpret 15/20 songs from a band as they are meant (though each and everyone of us has different ideas on what the songs mean!) it is the same as a specialised subject. To get the quality of intepretation you require, you almost need a 'touring' interpreter who can be properly trained.

And, like in all professions, you get committed people, decent workers and crap ones.

All this stuff of fraud is scary though.
  • Dirtyfrank – yeah, those are excellent examples of the crap we go thru. Thou that’s just scratching the surface. Yep, being Disney only makes it that more depressing. Last I heard, they don’t have Close Captioning either. I grew up near Colonial Williamsburg. My school would take fieldtrips there every friggin year, and I couldn’t go in most buildings. I don’t know what it’s like now, but I’d be so mad, here I was a local citizen and I couldn’t enjoy it! put a ramp in back where nobody can see, make a portable dvd player of what is seen and heard so I can watch it right there. My whole family worked there at some point, and I couldn’t even enjoy the whole thing.

And the lawsuit thing. It’s a shame it hasta come to that. It shouldn’t have to come to that if people would follow the ADA. ….and if the ADA was stronger. It’s weak, IMO.

Lol! I had that same problem, even with ‘blonde’ in my name. I changed my pic. Put a tight shirt on and let everybody know what I was working with.

Oh wow! Amazing news about Bjorn!

Redrock – I suppose this is enlightening for many people. Which is maybe why kat hasn’t locked it yet. Thanks for letting us advocate!

    Hey, Blondie!

The rally went well... though not as many people due to the cold and icy weather today... I was freezing my butt off! I also hurt my leg bad... my knee is swollen and bruised because I fell on the ice trying to get my speech paper when it flew out of my car. :( Then AGAIN walking up to the rally. Oh man... I had to hide my pain the whole day.... and did I mention the freezing part?

But it made news, though... found myself on three sites, lol.

Also made it to the TV news in Lansing:

    http://www.wlns.com/Global/story.asp?S=11623637

then click on the video on the left. :)

EDIT: video is no longer up there - two other links, one on YouTube with better quality and the other one is closed-captioned but not as good quality.

    CC: http://vodpod.com/watch/2637962-deaf-ra ... ?pod=billc

Man... I hate it when they edit pieces of the interview... for example when you see me pulling out my cochlear implant... they didn't voice that part.

I was responding to Dr. Ames' email to the Michigan Department of Education on the increasing usage of cochlear implants and implying that ASL would no longer be in demand.

    Pfft...

But that's my good friend, who was also being interviewed - glad she decided to skip her classes and showed up at the rally! :D

  • Omg! Are you ok?

You did great on the video! I’m glad your friend decided to do it.

This bad economy is rough. Often first thing on the chopping block are programs for people with disabilities.

Bbbuurrr snow. Reminds me we are going to my states general assembly soon to advocate. It’s always on the coldest day of the year! I think it’s a conspiracy. Hehehe! They pick the coldest day because they don’t want anybody to show up.

When somebody asked me why do deaf people even go to concerts:

I said it was some deaf people are not completely deaf. Also, they love to feel vibrations from the beat.

You are right, there are various types of hearing losses even when they say they are deaf. Some think they hear absolutely nothing. That is true in my case!

And the 2nd part is very true! And the visualization helps too... especially in ASL where we can feel the emotions of the songs by watching the interpreters.

actually yeah i heard that, i think my best friends cousin is deaf and for here 18 they got a dj to play really hardcore trance so they could feel the vibrations, i think its really cool

    Sly, aren't you? :P

Hey, I was informed that the rally made it to the front page on Detroit Free Press so I just ran to the gas station to get a copy and save it. EDIT: I made the front page at Lansing State Journal: http://www.lansingstatejournal.com/arti ... /912050325 :P

I'm going to the Board of Trustee meeting next Fri since most people I know will be working or in classes...and I don't mind doing it. I really enjoyed myself Friday. :D

And lucky for that 18 year old girl... on my 18th birthday I was studying my butt off for the exams at college.

21st birthday - pregnant with our 1st child.
25th birthday - pregnant with our third child.
30th birthday - pregnant with our 4th child.

WTF? Never could have fun the "traditional" way... hehe. Oh well.

Related to the VRS scandal... talked with a friend yesterday after the rally for lunch - whose son worked for one here that got shut down... each time I was going OMG...thinking I couldn't say that word again but only to say it again and again. Holy shit. OMG....

But good news - FCC is going to come up with a new regulation of monitoring VRS and I think they are going to provide workshop(s) on that within 2 weeks. Don't feel like googling tonight or asking for facts.... still wiped out and body/leg is still in pain from the fall. lol.

This bad economy is rough. Often first thing on the chopping block are programs for people with disabilities.

I knooow.... that sucks. Hubby was saying how it is not about money, but ethical/moral? It' is about human beings... like cutting off a branch from the tree. He said it was kinda like telling the blacks they could no longer go to the whites' school because they need to make budget cuts.

It's wrong of them to do this, he says... especially when it is the only program.

Bbbuurrr snow. Reminds me we are going to my states general assembly soon to advocate. It’s always on the coldest day of the year! I think it’s a conspiracy. Hehehe! They pick the coldest day because they don’t want anybody to show up.

Oh I also think it's a conspiracy!

And good for people make excuses for not coming...that they weren't planning to come in the first place. :P But for others, yeah good reason...but :P

Can't your group make a proposal of having a different date for safety issues?

  • I dunno that is a good idea. This day is known as lobby day. so a lot of different groups show up. So because it’s not just us, I’d doubt they’d change the day. Plus I think it has something to do with the general assembly budget. Or their schedule somehow. We go up there right before they vote for a particular issue or something like that.

Four kids! Gesh. Good for you! I don’t have any kids, but I’d imagine two would be plenty for me.

I’m glad you got press. My groups tries to get press on everything we do, but it’s hit and miss. You’re right. There’s a part of me that knows everything comes down to money. But at times especially when advocating, I try to make our issues moral issues because they are.
AND that’s one thing I don’t understand.... African Americans in the sixties were a lot more successful then the disabled community is/was at fighting for their rights. They got press, they had big famous leaders that got noticed. The disabled community has very little of that.
At times I wish we would riot in the street! Lol! ADAPT does that. But I think they’re a bit extreme like PETA so people blow them off.
Ex. throwing urine on the White House gates from their catheters.
There’s no need for that! Gross! Gets the focus off the issue because people are grossed out.

    Regulate those VRSes! Good!

    oh thanks so much joe!

like i said before, this is pretty much two people with disbilities talking. we haven't been yelled at to take it to PM yet and i really appreciate that! thank you mods!

i know people don't know much about what the disabled community deals with and i'm glad some people are taking the time to read this.

    good vibes!

Yeah... or nobody has ratted on us to the mods yet. ;)

So I'd like to thank my "enemies" on the board for not doing so. ;) I love you guys, too... :P

That's cool, joe... and thanks for coming back. It was weird when it was just me and blondie... we are just two weird pj fans like you... so come on and join anytime.

Disabilities... hmm... you know for political purpose, I do use that... but I don't consider myself disabled because I am not physically limited as you are... i can do what abled-bodies people do....

Ears? Yes... physical... but ahh... I have a language to use that the majority don't. Is that disability or minority?

I could be considered as a disabled person or as a minority like Spanish people with their own language and culture.

But meh, just because you are the only one here, I am disabled too! Hearing-impaired. I hate that term, but wouldn't argue about it, though. Every time I see that term, I think of this sign on a freeway that goes, "If your car is disabled, please pull over on the side to ensure the proper flow of the traffic"

And you know how people always stare at a broken car on the side... they still slow down the traffic that way! Jeez... if you don't want to help us get our cars back in the traffic, quit staring and move along! ;)

Joe... aye, I just need to write a letter on behalf of others and send it to 10c... that will take a while. I'm focusing on other things right now.

By the way, Boom farted? Damn, how did I miss that? I love that man! Especially his wife, Pinky...she kicks ass!

Yeah... it is a good feeling that people are learning more about us, our communities that share so much in common, and what we deal with on a daily basis!

    overloaded? LOL!!! Never!

Ohh... want to hear something funny?

You know how I fell hard - twice -before the rally?

I was limping really bad and cringing in pain all the way over to the admin building, went inside for a while.

Then out of the building, cringing in pain walking down the steps.

Guess who i saw at the bottom of the steps?

My favorite CP guy, standing up straight with this grin. He didn't realize who I was until I got to the bottom and closer to his face.

We were like  to each other, then he let his shoulders loose and walked away.

He thought I was a CP lady he could possibly hit on....??? :P

    Too funny!

    Regulate those VRSes! Good!

That's right... i forgot about that.... yeah, jeez - wish our communities had our own lobbyists.

Really wish that wasn't needed though... and I agreed with you on your FB where you said they should add the history about the disabled communities in schools, especially elementary.

The more exposure they get and education they received, we would be dealing with less problems, in my opinion. It's only logical....

LOL... two kids or FOUR kids would be better, not THREE. I swear... I'm sure mothers of 3 kids here on the board would be looking at me crazy... seriously, 3 is worse than 2 or 4! If you have 3, go for the 4th and you'd be surprised how much easier it is!!! Or maybe i'm just crazy.... ;)

LOL @ the extreme organizations... I am with you on there. There is an extreme organization in my community that I have no interest in joining... too extreme. They are attacking AGB - Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf (many like to refer it as AGBAD as an insult) - AGBell is also an extreme organization on the other end of the spectrum, putting down ASL and culturally deaf people subtly by using clever statements such as "Deaf people who use ASL are isolated by the society...." That scares the parents of deaf children and choose cochlear implants/oral method to raise their children.

This other extreme organization, some folks inside are very anti-ci (cochlear implants) and demonstrate anger by calling names... such as destroyers, child killers, deficit thinkers, audists, and so on.... and I was called those names by some individuals. I do have some friends who are anti-ci and they respect me, so I don't want to label all the same.

So yeah, too extreme for me!

Those two organizations are perfect for each other, in my opinion. ;) I'm all for parents who are well-informed with unbiased information in order to make the best decision for their child. Even if i do not agree with it.

  • Yeah I was going to ask you…
I ‘hear’ lol people who are deaf don’t consider themselves disabled. I guess that’s true based on what you said. deafness is the only disability that can be cured, I heard that somewhere. Maybe that’s why the deaf community doesn’t consider themselves disabled.
I just want to say, having a disability isn’t always physical. And having read my paper you can probably tell what my opinion is off that. So I’ll shut up about that.

He thought you had CP from your limping? And you can’t stand the man! Lmao! That had to have been a trip!

Yeah. I’ve watched documentaries on deafness and from what I can tell the deaf community has enough problems, they’re split within their group! It’s wack if you ask me. if that group can’t agree I hate to see them mixed in with the disabled community. Lol! (not that I wouldn’t welcome them in)

I’ll add that facebook cause for anybody on here to join:
Add the History of the Disability Rights Movement to Curriculum
Teach the history of the disability rights movement as part of the civil rights curriculum.

 You said it all in your paper - I told you that you did a great job on it and did your research, as well as your own experience.

We share so much in common, both of our communities - whether we consider ourselves disabled or not. And you are right, disability is not necessarily always physical. Thanks for that reminder!

Yeah - in my opinion, deafness is the most complicated one because there are many ways of approaches of dealing with it - communication modes and self-identity. That's why there are sub-groups of the deafness group.

As for the 'cure' - there isn't one. Maybe with stem cell, yeah... that one, yup. I thought about that before and would have went for it... just so that i could hear music the 'natural' way... but after some serious thinking, i thought... fuck no! There are some days I don't want to hear and after 5 years of having this cochlear implant, I like to sleep in silence.

I don't think I would like having to hear 24/7 after the excitement wears out and not having the ability to turn it off like I can with my cochlear implant. Nope.

And to make it even more complicated, it's no longer black and white even with the culturally deaf... because there are culturally deaf people who also wear cochlear implants (like me, for one). It's quite complicated.

Nobody seems to have the same agreement.

But like you have pointed out on that cause group page, it all points to the parents' acceptance of the child's disability. I have seen that growing up with parents treating their children as if they were hearing and demand that they act like them and expect them to speak as well. Sad. Later in life, they end up getting very emotional and a lot of problems... I'm thankful that my mother wasn't one of them, she just demanded that i had equal access, period. I tried like hell to do well in speech therapy for 20 years... just not good at it. My mom never made me feel bad about that... just expected me to do well in education.

or those who do treat them as disability and those children are raised to say they are disabled with hearing loss. i'm not saying there is anything wrong with that... it is all about upbringing and how it is perceived by the parents, school, friends, and so on....

I think you would make a great spokewoman and kick that CP guy out... lol. Yeah I think he thought I had one because I made a lot of facial expression because of the pain and limping so bad down the stairs. lol. What a dork.... :P At least you and i would work so well together....

Thanks for that facebook group cause - I will join when i get back there... I have to avoid there for now cuz i was way too addicted to it after getting so much attention from the rally. I feel so dirty and guilty now... lol

I have to work on another speech that i need to turn in tomorrow for the Board of Trustees meeting this friday... hopefully I would get picked out to give the presentation. We'll see.

Despite the similar problems we share... at least your group has it together than mine. :-/ I think, anyway.

I always tell my friends that if I ever invited ALL of my friends over... my house probably would blow up!

  • Well cure was a bad choice of words. With the Cochlear (sp) implant deafness is almost fixed. That’s why I said that.

See if your parent doesn’t accept you, you’re really screwed. Lol! my point in my paper was trying to figure out the cause of non-acceptance. Does society play a role in how a parent feels towards a disabled child, or do parents dictate to society how to accept their child?

I’m glad your mom was like that.
My mom is great too, but I think my dad coped by denial about my disability in some ways.

Oh, thanks for the compliment! You’re a cool chica! Keep the good advocacy work!

BBC America is finally playing Britain’s Top Missing Model. First round they wanted to kick of the deaf girl, because... get this... her disability wasn’t physical. I thought that was fucked up. Why let her compete then? There’s other girls on there where their disability isn’t physical.
Disability and rather you can see it or not, is a strange phenomenon.

Yeah, I see what you mean.... CIs are 'almost' fixed... but not really. It's just, in my opinion, advanced version of hearing aids. :P I've seen various results with individuals with CIs. The ones who do very very well with their CIs are of course put on the pedestal to give parents or desperate people false hope. *shrugs*

    Anyway...
See if your parent doesn’t accept you, you’re really screwed. Lol! my point in my paper was trying to figure out the cause of non-acceptance. Does society play a role in how a parent feels towards a disabled child, or do parents dictate to society how to accept their child?

*nods* I think it goes both ways. I recall one counselor who was well familiar with the deaf community, its history and spectrum of deaf/hard of hearing people as well as availability of resources and education, told me a story of one stricken-grief father who discovered his baby was deaf. He refused to accept the fact that his child could still lead a normal life, even after she explained all the options and information out there.

He came back later and told her bluntly: "I'd rather have a mentally challenged or down syndrome child than a deaf child!"

My jaws fell and she nodded in agreement. But yeah, some people just have a hard time coping when their child isn't what they were hoping for.

My deafness was the cause of Rubella infection (also known as German measles) that my mother contracted when she was 3 months pregnant.

My mother, as I've mentioned earlier, was young... she got pregnant at 16. So, when she saw the doctor for the rash, he strongly recommended that she had abortion immediately because the baby could be defect. My dad was in full agreement, but for different reason - he didn't want a baby and wanted to go to college.

Both him and my mom were straight A's students and he wasn't going to let this potential defect baby ruin his life and even kicked mom in the stomach when she refused to get an abortion.

When I was born, there wasn't a hearing screening back then so when they checked "everything"... everyone thought mom got lucky because everything was fine.

But at six months, mom found out something was wrong. She was so tired one day because I cried so much at night and she was tired of holding me at night because I wouldn't let her sing me to sleep unless she held me closely to her chest.

I was sleeping in a carseat on the table with a swing set folded against the table. Mom fell asleep with her head in her arms on the table, and when the swing set slid off the table and hit the floor that caused her to jump out of her chair.

I was still sleeping. There you go. :P She tested by screaming at me and I didn't respond. She got scared, naturally. When grandma came home from her 2nd job, she ran to the front door and screamed that I was deaf...and showed her by screaming at me in her arms, still sleeping. My grandma got really upset and slapped her face. :?

Well, it was confirmed at 8 months by an audiologist.

    My dad's excuse? "Well, she's a girl....she doesn't need a dad."

Never saw him again until I was nineteen.

So yeah... pretty common, I guess.

*shakes head at Britain's Top Missing Model* I'm surprised nobody blogged about that in my other community...but then again I've been behind over there too.

    Strange phenomenon, indeed....

  • i'm going to disappoint you with my short response. hehehe

and this isn't even really about disability.

men can detach themselves so easily. It’s a tragedy. I don’t know what it is about them nowadays, or if they’ve always been like that. But it’s scary how they can just walk away and seem to not even care.

And yes I stopped reaching out to my dad years ago. For reasons unrelated to my disability. He was a crap father to my abled-bodied brother too.

I’m not saying all men are like this. But something has definitely changed to make men walk away so easily.

short eh? pfft. ;) you're no fun! making me look bad with writing posts like a book! heh.

I know... lucky for me, Bobby has a strong feminine side to him (yes, he has been accused of being gay sometimes! bwahaha) that makes him so unique and his relationship with the kids, especially the girls, is wonderful.

Hell, my oldest daughter is more comfortable having the 'girl' talk with him...and would rather talk to him about sex or her boyfriend...even bra or bathing suit shopping. Mind you, she's still virgin! *wipes forehead* I am NOT ready for that yet.

It's pretty cool... but yeah I know... men are assholes in that aspect that they can completely detach themselves, emotionally, to the women who gave birth to their children.

sorry about your dad...but sometimes it's better off that way and making your life less miserable.

I used to imagine my dad looking for me and what a wonderful man he was...blah blah blah.

Now... meh. We don't have a bond, nor do i call him 'Dad' but by his first name. The kids even call him by his first name. :silent: They eventually add in 'grandpa' before his name. (but they do have a relationship with him like grandparents do)

  • Well it’s good he’s still in your life. I guess. But knowing how he felt when you were in the womb must be tough.

Me, my dad kept breaking my heart. So I had to stop talking to him for my own good.

Hey, gay tendencies(or however you label them) or not, you’re blessed bobby is there! (I think that might be part of the problem. Guys may think showing any emotion or attachment is gay. That’s totally fucked up if they do!)

I fear it's Lollapalooza all over again with Rothbury.

Blondie... I don't know if I've told you, but I mentioned somewhere in this thread that I got invited on the Access board for the Rothbury festival here in MI.

A few months ago, I was given a name of a Lead Interpreter to work with... I still haven't heard anything back from him or the agency.

Well, I started talking to people in the Deaf Community about that interpreter and it's like oh fuck, it's Lollapalooza all over again. More and more are telling me "Good luck with him... he does not listen to us and likes to be in control. Don't let him."

Well, the problem is... I don't know if I do have that authority. I guess I need to find out....who will listen to me, though? Hearing people would listen to the interpreters more than us.

But see? EV proved that himself - he didn't take me seriously. Neither did C3 or the Texas agency.

It took lawyers to make changes at Lollapalooza in regards to access issues.... but not the interpreters themselves.

Sigh. I will talk to the person who invited me on the board... but she was impressed with that interpreter. So that is going to be tough... how do I ask her? Should I tell her what the Deaf Community has shared with me?

I'm just sitting here, going damn... it looks like Lollapalooza all over again. :(

  • Start climbing up that mountain again. You can do it!
Can you think of any agencies that can help you? Give you support?

I just watched Personal Effects. It had a character who is deaf. I’ve heard hoopla that the disabled community gets upset when the hearing are hired for deaf roles. So I was curious so I looked it up. The guy was actually deaf. Yey! I think I’m not positive.

Yeah, that's the thing... having to climb the mountain AGAIN - from the very bottom, sighs. I would do it, yes. But will they listen this time?

I hate the thought of being a bitch like I was with Lollapalooza...with lawyers. I don't want it have to come to that.

I do have a slim chance here because the lady in charge of the Access department really likes me...I had communicated with her a lot the past few years when I was wanting to volunteer at Bonnaroo but failed due to money.

See see... I just emailed her, a longass one (like you'd be surprised by now). :)

Um...not that I can think of. It's that bad here in MI. :? But, I will keep asking around... the ones that I am familiar with... no thanks.

Heh! They would, for sure. ;) But I never saw hearing people complain when Russell Harvard played a hearing role. He's deaf himself. :P

So I thought that was interesting... lol. Especially "recently" when the Deaf Community had an uproar when a hearing man announced that he was gonna be playing the role of Matt "The Hammer" Hamill a UFC fighter.

After a bunch of noises and pressure, the hearing guy resigned and a deaf actor had stepped up - Russell Harvard.

And yes, you are being positive - keeping me in check and making sure I'm on my toes to do something about it! :D

It's just that... argggh, you know. I really don't want to go through that again like Lollapalooza... and you know that feeling of people not listening to you but others instead....

Blondie - I got response from the Access person... and i am really relieved. :)

She did say to please reserve my judgment until I've met the interpreters in actions and I have to agree with her. She said that she has received positive feedback from the deaf consumers and the reason I was invited on the board was so that I could observe for anything that could be implemented for the 2010 festival and also to notice anything else during the event that could be improved for the following year.

She said that I was basing my bad experiences from other festivals and expected the worst at Rothbury...but that Rothbury is one of the few that is very pro-active and very friendly in making accommodations. And she was right, I did feel that way.

She also said that the interpreters do advise her on how to run the program, but that she and her team make the final decisions. I could do the same and she makes the final decision. I'm okay with that.

She also said that she will use videos as one tool to recruit additional interpreters. She does the actual recruiting process, not the interpreters themselves. And she was right in stating that we all want to work together professionally in the most friendly and respectful environment without fear or suspicious, to keep communication open. She wants to resolve problems as soon as they surface - privately of course, so that it would not hurt one's reputation or professionalism. I also agree with that!

She wants to keep this program top-notch and to make it even better so that I could share it with the Deaf Community so that they'd feel welcome and want to come and enjoy!

So it doesn't start till Spring... because nobody is on the job yet. :D I'll be looking forward to it!

At least I don't have to climb the mountain...but to enjoy the view! Now that's one festival i am really really looking forward to!!! :D

    Wish you'd come too... :D
