After hearing early pressings from 1967 and mid- period (i.e. 80's) pressings of Are You Experienced for nearly 54 years, this Legacy pressing is so good it's almost disturbing. Because I'm so accustomed to decades of hearing this great record a certain way, it's strange to hear this version. The clarity of Jimi's vocals are amazing, and there is a lot of detail that previous pressing have rendered barely noticeable. Some of the highs are a bit bright for my damaged hearing (and after first listen, even at moderate volume, my ears are ringing like a son of a b!), but overall this is a revealing repress that I think most listeners will appreciate. This is, for me, an essential album, so a variety of pressings will always intrigue me. This one gets thumbs up. (And it's very affordable!)
Do you have the Newbury purple vinyl version? If not, seek it out.
No, but wow, to hear "Purple Haze " in living purple! OOOH...AHHHHHHHH!
What I really want though is a good mono pressing. When I was listening to the new-to-me Legacy pressing, the stereo separation seemed to stand out more than ever which, in some ways, is very cool. But in my head I was thinking how much I would really like to hear this music straight ahead (is that what Jimi meant when he wrote "Straight Ahead? lol) mono. Just straight to the brain without the wide separation. I'm getting to think I could hear 10 or 12 versions of this album and dig something about each one!

True. Early in my digging days, I had one copy and found another extra loved copy I was going to pass up. Decided to grab it. Dirt cheap. A nice surprise with the sound difference. Plus I really appreciate a copy that was spun and obviously loved by whomever owned it before it was dumped at the second-hand shop like most of our stuff will be someday. I hope my wax gets some respect in its second-life!

I think the mono remasters are not as good as the stereo. I've heard that the analog tapes were not in great shape. There are two versions, one from BG/QRP and one from MOV and both are said to be inconsistent in quality. I do have a mono of Axis and that is incredible. I agree with you that in the early days of stereo, it seems the sound is too hard panned on each side. It wasn't until later that engineers got the mix right on stereo records in general.

Yeah, I've heard the same about the mono masters.
It's a shame they aren't better preserved. I have the '96 Experience Hendrix mono and it's a fine pressing, but I don't listen to it as often because I absolutely love the stereo sweeps on a few songs, especially "You Got Me Floatin'" .
I'm toying with getting the MOV mono AYE simply because there are some out there that aren't too pricey. I didn't jump on the Experience Hendrix Legacy when it came out and those are getting up there too much for something a bit iffy in quality.

Found these in the $5.00 bin at the flea market today. Vinyl is not pristine of course, but definitely looks decent. The covers are in really good shape. I also saw a Ten Club Xmas single for $20. I decided to pass on it.

does anyone know why Young Shakespeare was done as a digital 192 to vinyl transfer?
That's on my list of best sounding live albums, (even the plain jane 33 and a 3rd version or the CD for that matter) and even if it's compiled songs from different shows. Imma find that one right now and order it.
