Received by Physical Graffiti album that I won on eBay for $33 yesterday too... Holy shit, the vinyl was FILTHY, and the sleeves have very extreme damage that the seller never said anything about (a highly rated seller - 99.9% positive). So I was kind of shocked when I took it out. And the vinyl was rated M- and it's not even close. :x So beware of lps_mailorder_wisconsin I suppose. He sells tons of vinyl. On the other hand, it IS a 1975 US pressing for $33, so how disappointed can I really be? :)

Yeah that sucks a big one when that happens, you're happy to have the record and for a reasonable price, but it's not in the condition stated so it kinda bum's you out when you first see it.
I had a similar thing a while back with a record by Underworld I brought off a guy in France, he said the vinyl and sleeve NM, "near perfect condition', (his words). It wasn't, especially the sleeve, not even close. I contacted him and said I didn't want to leave negative feedback so how about a partial refund, he said "Oh I know how this goes..." implying that I'm trying to pull a fast one on him! Then he offered me a 5 Euro's refund, I said forget it and just left it as is. It's just not worth the hassle.

Had this happen just recently with a couple used albums I purchased from Amazon. Condition of both was listed as Very Good and both were virtually unplayable. One was ridiculously warped. I asked for a refund from both sellers and they did give me one and didn't even have me send back the records. Each of them were about $9 with shipping and it just wasn't worth it for them for me to send back.

I've had mixed results buying used vinyl online. I tend to stick to my local record store or Half Price Books so I can inspect them before buying. Although I have had better experiences with sellers on Discogs. They tend to grade their stuff pretty accurately and most of the records will sound pretty good after a good cleaning.

Yikes. Well, at least my album is very playable. More crackle that it should have with an M- rating, but it still sounds pretty awesome (after I gave the discs a good cleaning). I would have been pissed if the vinyl wasn't playable or skipped or something. But I have only had GREAT experiences with buying 2nd hand vinyl online otherwise. Actually, most of the time I'm pleasantly surprised by how good the condition is - even better than described sometimes. But this is a good reminder that it's still a risk. Certainly buying in person is still the best way to go, but luck plays a much bigger factor when it comes to actually finding what you want.

Sorry, I don't remember the name of it. It's in a white bottle with some writing on it. Whatever the guy at the record/electronics specialty store I frequent gave me. That's the best bet - go to your favorite record store and ask the owner what he uses.

I do the wood glue thing. A lot of effort but totally worth it for most used stuff I buy.

Huh! Thank you! .... Seems kind of scary. Isn't it easy to get the glue all over the place?... not sure I have enough confidence in my own finesse to do that without getting it on my turntable and the label! But it is temping... Maybe I'll just get some shitty $1 record and test it.

Thank you! ... I appreciate the different ideas... But it makes me wonder: if there something wrong with just using a good vinyl cleaning fluid, spraying the vinyl with it, and wiping it along the grooves with a soft lift-free cloth??

The wood glueing method takes practice to get it right. You can make a mess or not use enough and have it not help much. I have tried every brush and fluid method and none seem to do anything but move the dust and dirt around in a circle. Just getting surface lint and dust off is sometimes not enough especially with used old vinyl. You have to get down into the grooves to really get it clean. The wood glue gets down in there and bonds well to dust, dirt and oils. I really do want a VPI machine but those are just too expensive. Would take a lot less time...

New: About time I got this on vinyl, I remember when it first came out and getting it for my birthday when I was 21, played it to death, but still have alot of love for this album.

Second-hand: Got this in the mail this week from the States, only took 2 months! The vinyl and sleeve are in great condition (NM) for it's age, 1986. Hearing Close to Me and In Between Days on vinyl = bliss.
