Sorry for that but one thing is clear: the energy of the crowd in Europe is completely different to a PJ gig in the US! Sometimes i have been really shocked to look at videos of PJ US gigs and see the first 20 rows like they were watching a PJ video!   Maybe its because of the chairs, maybe not! But its a fact that the crowd is way more enthusiastic, energetic and completely into it in Europe!!! Don't understand me wrong, i would love to see PJ live in the US...i would love to see them anywhere!!!
i saw them in new york msg 1-2 and the crowd was complitly different than this one was really awesome...but :lol: ok,in msg shows the 1/5 of the crowd was europeans...:lol:

  • This show was the last stop on my little west coast tour, first time in the US, first year traveling to see PJ, and I still consider this to be the best one yet. I had great seats and made tons of eye contact with Mike and Ed, and I never noticed the lackluster crowd until seeing this post. come to think of it, it's probably why they were looking at me so much, I was almost the only person rocking the hell out!
As long as I can score good seats, I'll take a bunch of bored Americans bobbing their heads over sweaty Europeans crushing me within an inch of my life, but I guess I'm just spoiled that way.

The energy was better in Portland, but here is what I have noticed.

People nowadays are too busy recording the shows or taking 100+ pictures instead of living in the moment. The chick in front of me recorded at least 8-10 full songs on her camera, and 2-3 more on her camera phone, one song, she actually held up both....

looking around, there were a good dozen or so fans doing the same. I dont mind if someone snaps a quick pic now and then, but seriously, recording 40-50 minutes of the show?

People are too concerned with sending text messages to people telling them where they are, rather than enjoying where they are.

Leave the personal media at home. Also, jebus, act like you enjoy music.

there are 2 things people have forgotten how to do.....

1....listen to music....(without doing anything else) Seriously, when was the last time you invited friends over to *just* listen to music? People dont do it anymore. they have to be driving somewhere, playing video games, or doing housework. nobody just listens to music anymore.

2....dance....people have forgotten how to DANCE. Dance, motherfucker. let loose, nobody cares if you look like an idiot....

The energy at the SD show on Friday was the best crowd I've ever experienced in the 13 shows I've been to. And the guys seemed really into it, too...which made it even more fun!! :D

Great post. This is what I try to do at every show I attend. I guess a lot of Americans kind of take it for granted and are more concerned with having a lot of YouTube hits then with actually making the most of the show experience... but when you travel half way across the world, you make damn sure you are enjoying every second of it.
Also, I have it on pretty good authority that rock & roll is free, if you want it.

philly will put them to shame though.

Yes I think so, and I'm looking forward to being part of it!!!! We should raise the roof just with our noise since the building's going down anyway.

I think the lottery helps with the energy in the front though. I got lottery last tour once and it was so much fun - you get to watch the band from up close and if you give them energy they give it back to you. I don't think I could ever be jaded to seeing Pearl Jam up close.

I think that for album releases, it's not uncommon to invite people over to listen to the new album. I have done this several times (mind you it has been a few years) however, drinks are assumed to accompany these listening sessions so it technically wasn't "just" listening to music. If there isn't a new Pearl Jam or I Mother Earth album being released and one of my friends invited me over to "just" listen to music, I would immediately know that something was up because nobody really does that. Ever.

All those medical marijuana clinics in LA are taking their toll!

I'm a little late to this party but the mere suggestion that the shitty reactions from Los Angeles crowds has *anything* to do with weed is beyond ignorant and insulting. I've smoked for 16 years and you won't find a single soul at any Pearl Jam show as enthusiastic as I am. And before anyone throws on their Johnny Law blinders and digs into the "horrible treachery of pot," please know that I a)take care of my business and have two wonderful, healthy and intelligent kids, b)have a goddamn dream job, and c)trust myself as an adult to moderate my intake and properly indulge in the right settings/situations. I couldn't pass for an extra in Pineapple Express. Oh and d)could give a shit what your opinions are on a plant that's legal (w/prescrip) in my state.

That said, the problem with Los Angeles crowds is exactly what the problem has *always* been with Los Angeles crowds: tons of jaded, cynical douches, both hipster and non, who wouldn't be caught dead freaking out over *anything* - be it winning the lottery, curing cancer or being on-hand for an amazing concert. Cool is currency in Los Angeles. It's a glittery cesspool of soulless priests and obsession with image/status. There is absolutely zero true soul to this area, everything is disposable and it's entirely uncool to appear affected or excited about anything except a new Apple product. If my job didn't require me to be here, I'd be long gone - but where else can you go to five shows a week, interview movie/rock stars, go to advance film screenings all the time and get *paid* for it?

I would rather have a crowd full of potheads *any day of the week* than one full of drunk fuckers screaming and repeatedly demanding the band play "Freebird" because they think it'll be hilarious to be that guy at the show. Spilling beer, fighting, bro-hamming it up, flashing their tits (nobody in shape ever seems to flash... hm. ), you don't need it laid out for you.

The *real* problem with dead PJ crowds, as I see it, is that the super-seniority TenClub members have been there too long. They're desensitized and unfazed by their own sense of self-entitlement. I'd happily give up my number (a low one - joined in '95) to see the slate wiped clean and get some fresh blood in the pit. Some actual kids who would die to be up there, not disaffected 35+ year-olds who think they deserve something.

Sorry to go off like that, but the complete dismissal of pot as an idiot's recreation is insulting. I don't drink because of alcoholism in the family and the fact that it makes it far too easy for people completely destroy their lives, so I enjoy smoking from time to time. Weed doesn't need your help in giving it an undeserved bad name. LA crowds just plain suck, through and through. It's depressing to see a show in this town, most of the time.

So not all pot smokers are the same but ALL Angelos are? It's okay to stereotype one group of people but not another? I grew up in Los Angeles. It's a city filled with 3 million people. Feel free to not assume that ALL people are the same. People who complain about the "fakeness" in LA are usually the type of people who are too afraid to venture into regions like South LA or East LA. Venture outside your comfort zone for once & maybe you'll get a broader perspective on life. I'm so sick of the incensant, childlish, close minded bashing on this board of all things Los Angeles.

I love my city & wish all the babies who complain about it 24/7 would just move the hell out already. Who needs them anyway.

What is the obsession with critiquing crowds on this board? Seriously stay in your own movie. If you enjoyed a show and don't project it in a way the is "acceptable" to others too f*ckin bad. Anyone who was at the Gibson shows know the band played amazing shows regardless how fenzied the crowd was. Eddie just likes to harrass the previous nites audience to make the current nites audience feel better.

    i disagree.

I think it's not only good to criticize but... apparently necessary.

I always thought that Canadian crowds at sporting events and concerts were too mellow... but apparently I had it backwards.

Everyone is entitled to their own unique way to enjoy a show... true. But it's Pearl Jam. It's a rock show. Show some involvement. Show you're actually having a good time. Show the band that the music is doing something... anything!

but I'm WAY MORE amped to hear new stuff than Even Flow and Betterman. When they played Gonna See My Friend in Seattle.... to me, WAY more fun than hearing Even Flow for the 18th time.

And.... while it's not CONCRETE proof.... it's still proof. Video evidence to support his accusation. As opposed to the guy's word. I'll take it.

i guess everyone gets something different out of a show. for my experience, the crowd makes a big difference. usually because i like to rock the fuck out and if i'm the only one doing it in my section, i feel like i'm intruding on those who are just chilling and enjoying it, since they have a right to do that too. i've been to plenty of shows where i start rocking and the people next to me leave, which is fine. but there's also something to be sad about bonding with a complete stranger over seeing who can rock harder during the show. so if the whole crowd is going off, it maximizes the whole experience. not to mention that for sure the band feeds off the crowd. if you don't believe that, then you haven't seen an east coast, european or south american show. listen to any boot from the 2005 south american tour and listen to the crowd. the band definitely gets as much as they give and any live performer says the same. go to a philly or boston show and then go to an LA show, it is two different universes. i'm not saying it's good or bad, just saying there is a difference, the band does give a shit, and for some people who want to rock, people standing around just diminishes the experiences. why do you think the band plays on the east coast so much, because they like the weather? i was shocked to see them announce 4 shows in LA. historically, west coast crowds are snoozers. it makes a difference

    i'm with ya man.

good for you, now piss off!!

I don't think anyone "Needs" a reaction from the crowd to enjoy the show. I believe that those of us who are totally against boring crowds will agree that although a Pearl Jam show is good no matter what...

a GREAT crowd will raise the concert from good to great and in some cases... legendary.

OK, I'm done reading everyone else's posts on this thread. I will say one thing that I can really only say for myself.

I, me, myself... truly believe that Pearl Jam play better when the crowd is more responsive. I also believe that they play more songs when the crowd is responding better. I believe they play longer solos when the crowd is responding better.

If that's not enough reason to leave your seat, sing along, raise your arms in the air... ANYTHING to show the band that yes, you are there and yes you appreciate the band.... then I don't know what more reason you need.

For any Buffalo 2003, Kitchener 2005, Hamilton 2005, or Vancouver 2009 people reading this... I THANK YOU. You made those concerts better.

No one was going to steal my shine in L.A. or S.D. Every time the concert ends I can't wait until I see the concert again.... Chills and Thrills!

Wow- you guys are awesome!! Make all the people in California feel like complete shit! Of course we can't possibly like PJ as much as you East Coasters- how dumb of me to even call myself a fan!
  • The bottom line is it was an extraordinary show. I was there that night & I can tell you for a fact that PJ seemed to be having a FANTASTIC time on stage. So everyone here can bitch & moan about some video or those of us who were there can remember what a great time we had & what a great time the band seemed to have. I think I'll do the latter.

    Why, thank you!

Honestly, though, I was at LA 2 (10C seats) and San Diego, and they were two of the best nights of my life. To come on here and have fellow fans (1) bashing the CA crowds and (2) insinuating how the band must really hate playing here because we suck so much, feels a little like a personal assault. Really? Is this what the PJ community does to each other? Is this the spirit of PJ? People from the East Coast and Europe telling me that I suck as a fan? Fuck you guys. I had no idea that random comments could feel so shitty. Time for a break from the "I'm the biggest PJ fan competition Board."

Okay...now I KNOW I'm in love with you. Thank you for beautifully expressing why LA bashing of this or any nature really bugs me.

There are cities I don't care for obviously but it's never b/c "the people there are so such & such." It's just so childish. So simplistic. It's so ridiculous to group thousands or millions of people into one group. Not only do I hate coming on here & hearing how I'm "such a lame PJ fan", I hate coming on here & continually reading about how apparently "fake, plastic & phoney" I am just b/c I'm from Los Angeles. Don't people realize how ridiculously simplistic they sound??? I guess not. I guess that's why people continue to spout such ridiculous stereotypes.

I couldn't agree more. The Seattle crowds got hammered on this board and by Ed. And yeah, it kind of made me feel like shit.

The whole new fad of people critiquing a crowd that they were not apart of only because they see a narrow view of a show through a fan recording from some dude's cell phone, is just fucking stupid. More stupid than a person shitting on a crowd that they were at least apart of.

But yeah, I am personally not a fan of the whole 'our cities crowds are better than your cities crowds' style of pissing match.

Sydney will welcome u with open arms Pearl Jam,and believe me,WE LOVE BACKSPACER N WE WILL ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Haha, you're from Sydney?? You mean, the city that had one of the worst PJ crowds of all time on Nov 8, 2006 (Sydney 2)? :D

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MrocNADN52k <-- apt that the song is Indifference. Man that night killed me.

Australian crowds are a bit notorious, from my experience, for being lacklustre at PJ shows, and I used to rant about this a lot. (Although Sydney 3 in 2006 was a welcome relief!) I think I've stopped worrying as much now. It could've been more intense I guess for such an intimate venue, but LA2 had a great vibe.

One can only hope the band cares about that and decide to come to Europe a little more often ;)

... and the will to show I will always be better than before.
  • I don't think Europeans are spreading 'hate' or trying necessary to piss on the shows in the US. It's just pretty clear from videos that crowds in the US are different to in Europe and seem to be pretty lame for us compared to our shows where people are... moving, clapping, jumping about and stuff like that.

It's not necessarily 'grading' the audience, it's a simple open conversation about cultural differences in which we can clearly see from the evidence presented that:
    (a) American crowds suffer from having to sit, like it is a Royal Variety performance, and
    (b) European crowds kick ass.
we're all going to the same place...

    8-)

I think US crowds can rock out but not in stadions like this when you have seatplaces. :(
Maybe that made it a bummer and not as energenic as the last European shows. (for now)

I think when we need to sit down and watch PJ the same shit will happen.
But i'm sure the seats will be flying through the Arena

Can't imagine gettin a seat to a rockconcert. That's what we European think is so damn lame about the US shows.

    .
