well, I was front row, and I'm 26, not 40. was I grateful? hell yeah! (my # sucks, I've never been even close to the front) I'm in the video on the far left, bouncing around. I don't think I stopped moving the entire time, and there were plenty of people around me excited. alot of them were just as shocked as I was to be up front, so they were kind of taking it all in, not moving around as much. to each his own, I guess.
well, seems to me the OP and this thread in general ARE discussing the seats upfront, since that is what you can see in the video...so i am comparing upfront to upfront. so if i am upfront at a pj GA show, i can barely move. yes, it is fun....but i am merely pointing out why it may appear they are 'rockin' out' more. people moving in unison, crushed together, look a lot more rockin' than the very same indiividuals rockin' out, even in the same way...with space between em. that is all.
as to 'adding to a show'...i think that is personal perspective. i personally think looking out at the crowd say at an MSG show is just as fantastic as looking out at the crowd at a milan GA show. and every time the whole GA vs. seating comes up, i never actually make a choice. i like BOTH, for different reasons. i don't think one is 100% better than the other, they both have pros/cons. all i was focusing on is people can have just as great a time, and rock out as they wish at a seated gig. nothing more, nothing less.
to THIS particular show, again, sure...the crowd looks rather subdued overall, and i ask....so what? there ARe people pogoing, there are people obviously *into* the music w/o being nuts about it. the band put on KILLER shows for all 4 LA gigs, so maybe, just maybe....they too can appreciate fans getting into their shows/feeling the energy...in different ways. it's just too bad that for whatever reason HERE, there are some who feel the need to *rate* how people choose to enjoy themselves.
i havent seen the video, dont watch vids at work. but im 100% pro-GA. i HATE being on the floor at an arena. i'd vastly prefer even being on the side or in the rafters. i'm letting my membership expire for that reason actually. there is nothing less comfortable than being on the floor in those shitty seats they cram together.

given my 10c # i have rarely experienced floor seats at a seated gig, i am usually in the wings. most of my pj floor experience IS for GA shows. and the few times i was VERY close at a pj seated gig (row 10 or better), it was at amphitheatres, so obviously a different experience. tho once i probably got 20th? row on the floor, and it was utterly AWESOME and my friend and i had PLENTY of space to jump around and have a blast, as did everyone around us....and it was a fantastic experience and i managed a great view simply b/c i was in the 2nd row of the section with a big walk walkway in front.
and hey, makes no difference to me if you or anyone is 100% GA, 100% seating....i was merely commenting on the TOPIC. and i say, having experienced a great variety of pj shows in a great variety of states and countries, while sure there ARE differences, the crazy Us shows are on par to me as the crazy europe and/or any GA shows. verona was no more wild than any MSG show, and honestly, nijmegen was as 'subdued' as the some of the canadian gigs i've been to. just sayin' that GA...or age of fans....or how many low 10clubbers are there....or whatever else arbitrary BS people want to assign as to why a crowd 'sucks'...just ain't always necessarily so, besides which, quite subjective and you bet, looking at one video of one song at one show...in no way *proves* that the crowd overall sucked, or that one type of seating is superior, etc, etc.

I really need to stop spending so much time in this forum.
After tonights show i'll try to take a long break
this thread = ridiculous
“I know this song so well, I can smoke a cigarette, have a drink, brush my teeth, take a shit, and mow the lawn while singing it. But I'll only be doing a couple of those things during this version.”
this thread is reefer madness. Its a new freakin song.......and its not pjs best. I haven't read this thread and it may bite me n the ass.....but thinking these same folks rocked out a bit more on other songs....right? THC doesn't necessarily kill ones want to rock out....so I'm told.
As to ga or not....been to few of each and no ga benefits outweight having drunk sweaty humans rubbing and excreting their bodily fluids (sweat etc) on me for four freakin hours.
Chairs don't inhibit rocking out. Exhibit A. Last two MSG shows......and yea East Coast owns the West coast! .................but not Toronto.

i get what you're saying and agree...to a certain extent. i agree they feed off the crowd, etc....and sure, from my personal experience west coast is more chill. however, WHy do pj play the east coast so damn much? you think it's for the crow'ds energy? sorry, to be blunt about it...it's for the crowd's MONEY, pure and simple. sure, they enjoy the energy, and they enjoy that definitely too in europe, SA and i am sure even on the west coast, the south...wherever they find it. however, while sure they do a LOT to reward fans they are going where the $$$ is. i think it's pretty clear that the east coast more than likely has the highest concentration of pj fans, a rabid fanbase lives here, in close proximity. makes it a money-making goldmine for band's with a strong fanbase here. that's it. honestly, i have oftentimes gotten the impression that ed doesn't care for us NYers all that much. sure, some of it is humor/stereotypes, but yes, i really don't think the east coast is where ANY of their hearts lie. however, their livelihood is based greatly here, and you bet....who wouldn't enjoy that energy? so the west coast may be more chill (and maybe not)...but i think the fact that they played 4 shows in LA shows that 1. thy knew they could make the $$$ there (especially in a smaller venue - you lucky fuckers) 2. they want to reward ALL their fans, even the chill ones...or even those who live in some areas not so chock-full of fans as the east coast...but still enough to balance making $$$/rewarding fans. also maybe why they headed south for a few not too long ago. just sayin'.
I don't know.....ed talks a lot sh*t up there (luv ya Ed) but when he describes the stage moving up and down.....he's jazzed. No doubt.....and they have to get few more endorphin drips when the crowd sings every frakin song, no matter the popularity.....and doesn't need help singing betterman.
Wow. I was there on the end of the 5th row and didn't realize how unenthusiastic the crowd was. It was a great show and the people directly around me were pretty into it, thank goodness. I do know a lot of people were smoking weed but I doubt that has anything to do with it. Although I will admit beer mixes much better with pj music than marijuana does...at least in my opinion.

great movie people watch there......wasnt??,,was a Rock concert???was a pearl jam show???mmmmmm..
Intresting........
"...Dimitri...He talks to me...'.."The Ghost of Greece..".
"..That's One Happy Fuckin Ghost.."
“..That came up on the Pillow Case...This is for the Greek, With Our Apologies.....”
its a reason and its becouse its for safety..as all is in USA
"...Dimitri...He talks to me...'.."The Ghost of Greece..".
"..That's One Happy Fuckin Ghost.."
“..That came up on the Pillow Case...This is for the Greek, With Our Apologies.....”
It has to do with the fact that those people have been upfront before and will be there again.
Most likely they were in roughly the same seats for the past three nights.
Also, I guarantee 90% of those people are over the age of 35 (nothing wrong with that but people tend to rock less the older the get, not all obviously).
Great strategy to sell tickets, bad for crowd energy.
and bad for the band energy..they give less on stage..

That's what happens when the ten club keeps giving the same great seats to the same 400 assholes every show!
how do you figure that?
rows 1, 2, 9 and 10 are random lottery...so should be LOTs of new faces in there....and even amongst the other upclose seats, do you really believe the SAME people travel to all shows? cmon, i know a lot of people do....but it certainly isn't everyone, there are always a mix of people. cmon people....little perspective.
btw - then you could say the same for euro shows....b/c they all travel too, and many of the 'same' people queue to be upfront, etc.
The majority of the people down in those seats are people who have been to a shit load of pearl jam shows. You don't need to travel to shows outside your state to go to a lot.

Also, you could only buy fan club tix to one show in LA so the people upfront for the most part had to be different every night.
All the ten clubbers I know here in Illinois get the same seats evey time here in Chicago.
All those medical marijuana clinics in LA are taking their toll!
I'm a little late to this party but the mere suggestion that the shitty reactions from Los Angeles crowds has *anything* to do with weed is beyond ignorant and insulting. I've smoked for 16 years and you won't find a single soul at any Pearl Jam show as enthusiastic as I am. And before anyone throws on their Johnny Law blinders and digs into the "horrible treachery of pot," please know that I a)take care of my business and have two wonderful, healthy and intelligent kids, b)have a goddamn dream job, and c)trust myself as an adult to moderate my intake and properly indulge in the right settings/situations. I couldn't pass for an extra in Pineapple Express. Oh and d)could give a shit what your opinions are on a plant that's legal (w/prescrip) in my state.
That said, the problem with Los Angeles crowds is exactly what the problem has *always* been with Los Angeles crowds: tons of jaded, cynical douches, both hipster and non, who wouldn't be caught dead freaking out over *anything* - be it winning the lottery, curing cancer or being on-hand for an amazing concert. Cool is currency in Los Angeles. It's a glittery cesspool of soulless priests and obsession with image/status. There is absolutely zero true soul to this area, everything is disposable and it's entirely uncool to appear affected or excited about anything except a new Apple product. If my job didn't require me to be here, I'd be long gone - but where else can you go to five shows a week, interview movie/rock stars, go to advance film screenings all the time and get *paid* for it?
I would rather have a crowd full of potheads *any day of the week* than one full of drunk fuckers screaming and repeatedly demanding the band play "Freebird" because they think it'll be hilarious to be that guy at the show. Spilling beer, fighting, bro-hamming it up, flashing their tits (nobody in shape ever seems to flash... hm. ), you don't need it laid out for you.
The *real* problem with dead PJ crowds, as I see it, is that the super-seniority TenClub members have been there too long. They're desensitized and unfazed by their own sense of self-entitlement. I'd happily give up my number (a low one - joined in '95) to see the slate wiped clean and get some fresh blood in the pit. Some actual kids who would die to be up there, not disaffected 35+ year-olds who think they deserve something.
Sorry to go off like that, but the complete dismissal of pot as an idiot's recreation is insulting. I don't drink because of alcoholism in the family and the fact that it makes it far too easy for people completely destroy their lives, so I enjoy smoking from time to time. Weed doesn't need your help in giving it an undeserved bad name. LA crowds just plain suck, through and through. It's depressing to see a show in this town, most of the time.
Sorry for that but one thing is clear: the energy of the crowd in Europe is completely different to a PJ gig in the US! Sometimes i have been really shocked to look at videos of PJ US gigs and see the first 20 rows like they were watching a PJ video!   Maybe its because of the chairs, maybe not! But its a fact that the crowd is way more enthusiastic, energetic and completely into it in Europe!!! Don't understand me wrong, i would love to see PJ live in the US...i would love to see them anywhere!!!
