    turn it down, huh...?

lets say he did...I'd be willing to bet anything that we would have heard:

"oh the arrogance, how dare he turn down something like this"

"turning it down was a slap in the face to Nobel Peace Prize Committee and the world"

"you see, I know Obama hated peace"

    "he's antichrist"

    did you read cate's post?
it was not an arrogant statement at all. if anything, it would point to intelligence and humility. the fact that the nominations for this award had to be submitted, what....2 weeks after he was elected, i am sorry but....wtf? TWO WEEKS as president, and he's changing the world? he may well, and his election did indeed send a message to the world that america does want change, etc.....but even as a supporter, i too most heartily agree it is too much, too soon. it certainly wouldn't be a slap in the face, if anything, i think he would be even more lauded for it. he does NOT deserve it.....at least not yet. i read all the 'whys' of his nomination and winning....and yet....he has not truly 'done' anything yet. being elected alone, full of great ideas, just not enough. i think it's ridiculous he even got nominated in the first place. i think obama may well do great things for this country, but i think he most definitely is being over-hyped.
    Stay with me...

it's funny to hear the members of the committee speaking now ... apparently 3 of the 5 members did not want to give it to him but they supported the will of 2 of the members ... hearing that this committee is appointed by the norweigian gov't and that they are representative of political parties makes it even less relevant ...

yeah, I read it the post...

and yeah, all you're points have been raised over and over and over...

my point is that if he did turn it down, just as many would be second guessing, dissecting, and complaining...

to be honest, the response to his being awarded the prize is quite amusing...

I think it's incredibly naive to think the right wouldn't crucify him if he turned this down. He wouldn't be lauded for it, they'd have his head on a platter. He's damned if he does, damned if he doesn't. They're just bitter that he was ever elected and nothing he says or does in office is going to change it. It's like Clinton times ten. He handled it the only way he could have.

Are you serious ? Do you really want to go down this road again? Ok fine... Yes you are right there were some isolated cases where some interrogators went to far. But no one was ever raped or executed. and Castro, Chevez, kim jung ill have been doing this shit for decades to people just for speaking out against there government.

You said you opposed the Iraq War and Saddam was just as bad as these guys. What do you suggest be done about these leaders and countries? Invade, kill them, remove them, and install someone else? What could Obama be doing right now about these places that he hasn't?

Also, no one raped in American prisons? We rape our OWN citizens in these places, and then tell them to keep quiet about it:

For me at least the criticism isn't being hurled at Obama, but the idiots that awarded him the awards after 10 days in office.

I do agree that if he turned it down the right would find a way to criticize him for it, even though I think it would have been a great message for him to send. But that's a tough position to be in.

Which is why I don't envy him. It put him in a very awkward position and he handled it the best he could have. It was a bonehead call by the Nobel committee, but there isn't a damn thing he can do about it. Has anyone ever declined a Nobel prize? What would they have done to Obama if he had? I can just see the cries from Fox about him thinking he's too good for the Nobel...

This award was clearly based on wishful thinking.

True he might have been criticized for it but isn't Fox already criticizing him day in day out? So it wouldn't have changed much with regards to Fox or all the other right-wingers. What it would have changed was that the majority of the world would have respected him. I'd say his support around the globe would have gone crazy if he declined the award. And you don't have to come out saying "oh I dont deserve it". There are better ways of dealing with it. Like for example "At this point in time I do not believe I have done enough to warrant a Nobel peace prize but I do hope in the future after my actions around the globe have taken effect, people may feel once again that I am deserving of such an honour, therefore I respectfully decline". and I'm sure Obama has speech writers that can do much better than what I have done in 1 minute.

Personally, I don't like Obama as I see him to be more dangerous than Bush in the sense that we knew Bush was a crazy motherfucker while Obama gives people some hope only to snatch it away. Support against the wars was huge when Bush was around because everyone hated him. Now that Obama sugarcoats it people stomach it better.

what you see as whining(and perhaps there was) and overreaction i see as indignation and flat out disbelief. any aimed at obama is ill placed.. but any aimed squarely at the nobel committee is absolutely very deserved. they fucked up. they now know it(if they didnt know it before) and now they cant take it back. perhaps next time theyll actually think before they blurt out something of equal absurdity in the future.

i was watching the trials of henry kissinger and it said when kissigner got the peace prize others were awarded it with him but they declined to accept it becase they were getting it for peace in vietnam and since the war was still going on they felt it wasn't deserved......

  • If it’s too early in his leadership to congratulate him , then it’s too early to criticise him right?

that's assuming you're still talking about how the decision to award the prize to him, was made after he had only been in office for a small number of days. i'm pretty sure you are all aware the prize was awared in early january, months before the announcement. i don't understand what process/criteria the awards panel used here to determine a winner. even so, the credibility of the awards panel leaves a bit to be desired in my opinion.

if at the end of his term he is still leading the occupation of two countries AND arming, protecting and financing the occupation of another, he can give the prize back then. i've seen some of the other comments saying he should give the prize back now and then everyone will have more respect for him. i don't see it like that. giving the prize back won't change my opinions on anything. stopping the occupations is a much more powerful message to send and the only acceptable one for me.

he can't stop the occupations now. the right will crucify him as a coward and the next gerald ford. and once palin starts flapping her uneducated mouth it will embolden the right and it would make him vulnerable in 2012. if he does not pull out now he risks his own party abandoning him... he is in quite a pinch right now, nobel lauriat, maintaining in iraq and escalating in afghanistan...talk about a conflicting set of circumstances...
