It is "just you" original poster. I have to disagree. After listening multiple times in my cars and with earphones, I thinks Ed's voice sounds really strong. During the 3 solo shows I saw, he sounded phenomenal. Sorry you are so disappointed, I cannot be happier with this album start to finish.
And I'm not living this life without you, I'm selfish and clear
And you're not leaving here without me, I don't wanna be without
My best... friend. Wake up, to see you could have it all
I've seen eddie in philly at the tla and he was incredible. My topic was poorly written.... Kinda harsh actually. I think out of all of the albums from ten to backspacer , backspacer has the weakest vocals. A few songs sound great and damn near god like but as a whole it doesn't stand up to the previous albums. My opinion.
can everybody stop posting in this thread please? Seeing "Worst singing on any Pearl Jam album" at the top of the forum just pisses me off...what a bunch of bullshit
“May you live to be 100 and may the last voice you hear be mine.” - Frank Sinatra
I don't know what he has been doing differently, but the 2006 tour, in my opinion, his voice was just shot and I thought it was all over for him....S/T was just terrible vocally speaking. But Backspacer is incredible vocally and I'm glad his voice is seemingly back on track again.

Have you listened to Riot Act. Imagine Ed brining his Cropduster vocal to Amongst the Waves. As much as I love All or None, that vocal delivery is no where near what he pulls off on the End. Music is subjective but... It's not like Ed just did a great job on Backspacer. He blew it out of the fucking water! Maybe you got the wrong version of the ablum.
There was maybe about a 15-minute window on Saturday afternoon, like from 3:34 to 3:49 in the afternoon, when we got to revel in the release of Backspacer.
Then these nancies showed up bitching about silly things, and this place sucks again.[/quote]
ha ha, i like it, so backspacer did get its 15minuets of fame then..

I agree with the posting. Sure Riot Act had more "mumbly" style singing. But Backspacer has some points where it just sounds BAD. Like they weren't even trying to get a good vocal take. I think maybe Ed was doing it on purpose on some parts of the album. Kind of like Conor Oberst now sings a bit better than he used to in Bright Eyes, where he used to make himself sound like he was about to cry on every line. I feel like Ed makes that same kind of sound on purpose quite a few times on this album (throughout Just Breathe for example, not a screamy heavy song, but it sounds like he's out of breath or has a cold on the vocal take). The highest part on The End for example. That does not sound good (around 1:00 and 2:14). There's also a couple parts on Got Some (the studio version made me like instantly compared to the Conan version this summer), where it sounds like he chokes on the high "Need it" (1:02 for example). Some of the other screams, he will not be able to hit live after 20 songs. Watch the "Gems and Rhinestones" choke from Seattle 1 the other night. Gonna See My Friend, as rocking a tune as it is, is really just a bunch of screaming noise on the vocals (ex: 1:46-1:47...not a good scream take). Those are not the same caliber of guttural screams of Ed's past. Sorry, but it's just not.
And it's OK, everyone gets old. But give up the smoking already or there's gonna be nothing left in a couple of tours, and the whole set will be comprised of Small Town easy-to-sing type tunes.
Oh, and they already had to change The Fixer's key to play it tuned down to hit the high notes. Not a good sign. And that was before the album had even come out!
