maybe its me but Eddies singing on backspacer hit an all time low. sounds out of breath, tired and out of it.
Album is fair but nowhere near as good as any of the previous albums...Give me Binaural over this.
Oh well i guess it had to happen eventually...even the Beatles had their low point.
Heres hoping for a better effort on the next one.
I agree. Riot Act is . . . oh, wait you mean Backspacer???

You think he didn't put out enough effort?! You're upset because you prefer the sound of a younger Ed's voice and you think the only reason it sounds different is the amount of effort you think he's NOT putting in?
You don't think maybe he was trying to use his voice to express emotions in these songs? You don't think that maybe nearly twenty years of smoking and touring might have changed his voice?
You think out of all the reasons his voice might sound different that your best guess as to why it does sound different is that his effort wasn't good enough?!

You know I'm not a huge fan of Backspacer, but to me is voice is still pretty solid. His voice sounds damn good. You can tell that the Into the Wild CD really helped get his voice back onto par.

Every song changes. You want the worst singing on any PJ album? Mankind. Stone has no voice. And even the band knows it.

But that son of a bitch sure can write a song on the guitar! Without Stone who knows where my life would be right now..
The low point there was McCartney letting MJ buy the catalog...for what? 40 mil
He sure didn't LET Michael Jackson buy the catalog. Pop stars in the 80's made a lot more than pop stars in the 60's and 70's. Jackson outbid both Paul and Yoko Ono's combined assets to buy the catalog.

You are absolutely, positively nuts. That's all I can say. He sounds so fucking good on this album. So fucking good. Spine-tingling good.
Maybe invest in better speakers. Or better Prozac.
obviously this guy didn't see any of EV's solo shows...voice has never been better

I'm digging Backspacer, but I agree with the op in that i believe some of the songs contain his "worst" (if you want to call it that) singing. some tracks could have done better with more polished singing. a great example is Unthought Known. Love the song - my favorite on the lp. in fact the only song from the lp that gives me goose bumps it's that good. however the singing that starts the song (the verses really) are a bit shakey, and therefore take away from the song. more polished singing would have made it a flawless song in my opinion. I think the same could be said of the ballads. now of course someone might say that it's more "real" leaving the shakey singing as is. but if their aim was to make a commercial lp, it might have been a good idea to work on the vocal kinks a bit more.
Ed's really got to stop smoking. if not for us then for his wife and kids.
Geez, his voice isn't always going to be that of the mid-twenties, early thirties Eddie Vedder (Ten - Yield). I do hear a slight strain/scratchiness in his singing too, but that doesn't take away from the album altogether.

Seriously? He sounds pretty fucking spot on in Unthought Known. I'm not really sure what you were expecting.

the same bullshit thread is posted EVERY time a PJ album is released, it's been happening since Binaural came out...the OP would have had to been around long enough to know that though  Ed's voice sounds amazing on Backspacer. End of discussion

the chorus is spot on perfection. but the the verses are like a creaky train moving along, where I'd prefer it if they were a smooth bullet maglev! you know? bad analogy here. like someone said up there though he's not 20-something anymore. and I'm no producer, I just wish the verses were a little smoothed out, that's all.
I AM FUCKING SICK OF THIS. WORST SINGING IS STONE ON 'MANKIND'. THIS ISN'T EVEN UP FOR DEBATE. THIS IS ACCEPTED AS TRUE. WATER IS WET, OBAMA IS BLACK, THE SKY IS BLUE, OJ IS GUILTY, AND STONE SUCKS ON MANKIND.

I think maybe what you're hearing as "shaky" or "creaky" is an artistic choice made to serve the song. It's really the only thing I can think of. Because I'm really not hearing what you're hearing. Just sounds like Ed to me.

As much as I love Riot Act and Avocado, he sounds ten times better on this album. He finally stopped mumbling and doesn't sound like he's in pain. You are insane.
I love Backspacer, but definitely hear what you hear about Ed's "shaky" voice. Its especially noticeable when listening to the album with headphones. The first time I listened with headphones I also wished that it could be a bit "clearer" but that just isn't his style. Still think his voice is light years better than it was on Self-Titled, which truly has the worst singing on any PJ album.

Stone talks about Ed pushing his voice to a breaking point on purpose on this album ... I think it is absolutely an artistic choice he's making.
