The low point there was McCartney letting MJ buy the catalog...for what? 40 mil
He sure didn't LET Michael Jackson buy the catalog. Pop stars in the 80's made a lot more than pop stars in the 60's and 70's. Jackson outbid both Paul and Yoko Ono's combined assets to buy the catalog.
Not true, either one of them could have secured financing, especially McCartney, with the Kodak fortune next to him. Besides, McCartney's fortune is far greater than Jackson's estate.
maybe its me but Eddies singing on backspacer hit an all time low. sounds out of breath, tired and out of it.
Album is fair but nowhere near as good as any of the previous albums...Give me Binaural over this.
Oh well i guess it had to happen eventually...even the Beatles had their low point.
Heres hoping for a better effort on the next one.
I don't hear what you hear...sounds great to me. I've said it before - Ed's voice is in excellent shape - not a complaint one here.
what the fuck, his voice is good. years add up, no one carries a yong mans voice into their old age, not even the great. who sits around bitching about this shit, did you expect the voice of a 27 year old?
I disagree. Ed hasn't sounded this good in 10 years (he sounded far more tired on Riot Act). He may have sounded better on Binaural but that was recorded and mixed so weirdly I can't tell.
He definitely sounds older (particulary on Just Breathe) but that's to be expected as he's not a young man anymore. He seems to be using his voice in different ways now.
So this life is sacrifice...

I've said this before when people complained on other albums of Ed's singing.... Ed sounds great! I think he sounds great on every album. I honestly have no complaints. People age, and sure everyone knows that smoking doesn't help. I am a singer myself. I am 29 and smoke. I don't sound as young as I did at 23, but I can do things with my voice that I couldn't at 23. I like to compare as I have said before Ed to Frank Sinatra.. in the sense that when Frank got older, his voice wasn't quite as good. Happens to every singer as you get older, regardless if you smoke and both Ed and Frank smoked, but what I hear Ed doing is what Frank did. As they got older they made up for the aging voice with better delivery, better annunciation, more passion etc. Ed has always sounded great to me, but the Ed of today is doing things with his voice that I don't think he could do in the Ten days.

Couldn't agree more. Ed's voice is older now... and he's actually a better singer than he was. Singing is about more than how high a note you can hit.
All the rusted signs, we ignore throughout our lives, choosing the shiny ones instead...
And he who forgets, will be destined to remember...
I like this album but the singing is an issue with me. I loved his voice on ITW and I don't think it just disappeared over night.
Nevertheless the conan performance, the 08 Boots, and now Backspacer are cause for concern. I don't like how it seems he can't go 10 words without his voice cracking. Is that on purpose? certainly it could be fixed in studio even if it was a problem... so it must be choice.
Still, I think his voice was rich until S/T. He still sounded great on RA. Since then his vocals prob have lost 1/2 a step and that combined with a new delivery style is what people are noticing.
I'm not a fan of the vocals Tour 06 - Current (Except ITW i loved, and solo tour i loved). But I think he's just trying new things within the PJ sound.
Yeah, what's with all these low-post count peeps coming out of the woodwork to bash Pearl Jam on their fan board?
If you haven't had anything to say up until now, how about you just keep it that way?!
Excactly. The OP referenced ED's Backspacer vocals being the worst since Ten. The low post count, combined with only one or two posts in this entire thread, makes me think the OP recently heard Ten and bought Backspacer hoping it would be similar. I could be way wrong here, but I really think this poster doesn't have a whole of familiarity with PJ's catalog and Ed's vocals if he/she is claiming these are the worst.

I just think it's plain silly to call one of my lifetime's very best singer's vocals shitty..Ed's worst day is better than just about everyones best day.....when I saw PJ is San Diego in 2000, Ed was sick as a mother and sang flawlessly...blowing his nose into a towel and drinking tea between songs...he then debuted his version of Don't Be Shy SOLO and just killed all of us.......so..........whatever

Ed sounds like he has the flu to me on this one.
Anyways, he is not getting any younger and your voice will not get better with age (especially for a smoker/drinker) so it is what it is. Not his best, but I am sure he gave it his best which works for me.
Can everybody chill out. Not every thread on this board has to be about how much you love Pearl Jam or whatever. People can bring up things they dislike for gods saker if they like.
Eddie is straining and grunting to hit notes so much in self titled it's terrible.
Yes. Been saying this since the album came out, it's the worst thing about that abum. It takes away energy from the songs instead of adding imo. It was such a contrast from RIotAct which to me had great vocals, I liked the softer and thoughtful Eddie (I understand people saying his voice sounds tired, but I don't agree). it really fitted the songs. Even though HELP HELP and SAVE YOU could have used more aggresive vocals.
S/T had the worst singing. Really rugged, and it spilled over into the following tours. People write that you have to accept his voice changing with age, drinking, smoking etc. Ofcourse we accept that. But you can also utilize(Spelling?) your voice in different way. The way Eddie used his voice on Riot Act was perfect, in my opinion of course, and that record makes his voice sound so good.
But Backspacer was a step up from S/T, not "the best vocals ever" as some people high on a new PJ realese believes but they work. Better on the rockers though than on The End and the other slow songs (Just Breathe had great vocals though, they worked really well).
Maybe they work better though because BoB worked with them more than what they did on S/T. Who knows. Or maybe the songs are less word-y (except for Johnny Guitar) than the ones on S/T. Who knows. But yeah, not the best vocals but works better than I thought beforehand.

The BEST thing about BACKSPACER and Eddie's current voice...You can always just eject the cd!!!!!! Or remove it from your playlist. Or, not buy it at all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You don't have to listen! We are free to do any of the above, or, if we want, we can just listen to this album and say it fucking kicks ass! And if you really really think Eddie sounds like shit these days the you probably wouldn't really enjoy a live show so you could even just stop buying concert tickets and leave them for others who will take Pearl Jam, Eddie's time-and-lifestyle-choice-worn voice, and all!

I noticed some autotuning on some of the lower registers and personally Ed's always been a pitchy singer which is why I love him. So raw. He sounds great even when he is pitchy. let him sing pitchy. I hate technology in music.
Still better than 99% of the lead singers out there, but his voice has been falling off the table pretty quickly the last 4-5 years.
Jeez. The best vocal performance I've heard from anyone ... anywhere ... at any time ... was on Ed's solo tour in 2008. The guy could just bring you to your knees.
If that's "falling off the table" ... well then fuck me. I don't know what you people want ... the heavens could open up with angels singing in pitch perfect harmony, and you people would be like, "Eh, pretty rough."
As someone else mentioned, Ed's vocals, every facet of them, are THE BEST thing about Backspacer.

Man slightofjeff you have said exactly what I have wanted to say on a bunch of these threads that I had to quote you... and add..If people think Ed sounds like shit they are fucking mad! He sounds strong as hell! Worse I have heard recently was comatose from S/T. That just isn't his voice anymore..if it ever was.
When you sing for 20 years or so you can change delivery. I am so sick of the fucking smoking shit all the time. He sounds awesome as far as I am concerned. On almost all of these tracks he gives it up a different way. I swear to god people on here want this album and this band to fail and be shitty for whatever reason and it's a drag! YES SMOKING IS BAD but so is screaming your ass off for how many years. Yet people seem to want that type of singing??
Ed has progressivly changed his singing over the years..it's called getting better not worse. I think maybe some of the limitations he has he always has had but just said fucki it and screamed through it. I read something long ago that he admitted to not actually learning how to sing (coaching) until 98. Everyone wants that super loud bombastic style from back in the day..but loud and strong like that doesn't mean he is singing correctly. Shit I got into a long argument back on the old boards with people about the famed Soldier Field 95' set. I said he sounded terrible, and others thought it was the greatest thing that he had ever done? So I am not afraid to make a critical remark about Ed's voice. I felt I needed to justify becasue it seems not so cool to like this band, or this record on this board anymore becasue you are labeled a sheep or whatever other bullshit is being said. Sorry for the rant...
Sorry for the rant and to the OP you are nuts! Sorry you don't like the album I fucking love it! I will love it even more after my three nights in Philly!!!!!

My two cents....I think his voice is certainly different now and sounds somewhat strained at times but you have to factor the following.....
-Constant touring (band and solo)
-Smoking
-Drinking
-Dude is just older
I don't care, he is passionate about what his singing and that more then compensates for any change to his vocals as far as I am concerned.
