After I got slagged in the forum for stating Seattle crowds suck Ed Vedder made a point of confirming it in Vancouver. He made a few statements saying that Seattle's crowds sucked and Vancouver was the start of the tour. I hate to say I told you so...

Here's the thing though guys. He does that alot. In Portland he said the Vancouver crowd sucked. Often time he'll say the night two crowd is better than night one.

He said that too in Portland? Mama mia!!! Ed does repeat alot sometimes; he's been saying he will pass curfew to the crowd's the past 2 year's now. It ain't happening! :ugeek:

When did he say that in Portland?

  • what i remember eddie saying in regard to vancouver was he was taunting us to sing as loud as canada did, urging us to do a better job due to canada doing so well. i think portland crowd came through on that. eddie seemed pretty happy with the results.

portland clark county amphitheater ... what was with the ONE big bathroom that had a 50+ person line out of both women and men's doors??? wow. that was overwhelming to see that ONE long line. we gave up and went back into the concert and held it all night. thank god we didn't drink non stop like so many others ... that's all i could hear folks talking about in the crowd, that long bathroom line to the ONE bathroom building. sheesh. at least until the show started. :)

the show was one of the best i've ever seen. eddie was ON, baby. like not in a long time.
  • I have mixed feelings about this thread and what Eddie said in Vancouver. Unfortunately, in general he's right about Seattle crowds at concerts. It's not just for Pearl Jam. At least the crowd was on their feet the whole time, which isn't the case for all shows. Seattle crowds tend not to dance and will often just sit there. Maybe we're just a city of introverts. I'm sure some of them are just soaking it in and really enjoying it like Gibson. I have a friend like that, too, who can tell me the most amazing things she observed after the show (and I'm always relieved really to find really enjoyed it). Others are probably like me. I kind of go with the general energy of the crowd and sometimes do sit there myself at concerts (though not Pearl Jam) or won't dance as much.

That being said, I'm afraid maybe Eddie is taking it personally and thinks the band is being dissed, and maybe that's the reason they haven't played here in years (and Eddie didn't play here for his solo tour). Seattle crowds can be won over and gotten out of their shells and dancing; and I think Eddie could do it.

    I've seen it happen including:

Mudhoney in July at the West Seattle Festival: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abFGn13UXzE

Flight to Mars (Mike McCready's UFO tribute band): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WugOyvg9_KY

That being said, I think it's a shame the hometown crowd isn't giving them the welcome and the love shown in the clip of the Argentinan and Eugopean crowds Dimitris posted.

How can the band not respond? A couple clips I've found of the Argentina show:

Black (I love Eddie's smile at the end of this when the crowd is still singing):

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHz68GUHy3I

Yellow Ledbetter (the crowd doesn't want them to leave, and they don't want to leave the crowds adoration):

Seattle crowds should be like that. It should be like Springsteen playing Jersey!

Maybe the answer is in the Mudhoney video. More free gigs in West Seattle!

    Oh, well, I can try!

As good as that sounds, free Pearl Jam show would be chaotic :P It annoys me when local people ask "Wait, they're still together?" though lol.

Just got back from the show in Seattle. Great performance - the boys rocked it

The crowd was dismal. We had awesome seats right beside the stage, lower level - and we were surrounded by a sea of people with their arms crossed or their hands in their pockets.

Now I know we're in hard financial times and that at 8 bucks a beer its hard to have fun at the Key - but seriously folks, after a 5 year drought the welcome PJ got was shit. Boring and pathetic. The energy was gone. Not the first time I have seen Seattle shit the bed when it comes to a rock show.

Disappointing - you should know better.

Oh and BTW if you are going to participate, don't fucking sing soprano to a baritone and dont sing songs you dont know the words to, in fact just dont sing at all- you drunk fuck.

    Bullshit

Someone actually had the nerve to tell me to calm down! I suggested they go fuck themselves and do it in the privacy of their home.

I have mixed feelings about this thread and what Eddie said in Vancouver.

What he says at concerts about the crowd the night before should not be taken so seriously. Last night in Portland, before Present Tense, he told the crowd to sing along and then added that in fact they should sing louder than "those Canadian fuckers" north of the border. I think he just finds it funny to badmouth the crowd from the night before. Although I have to admit, I was kind of taken aback when I heard him commenting about Vancouver feeling like the first night of the tour. And I actually teased my Seattleite friends and told them that Vedder cheated on them with the Vancouver crowd :D

I take 'those Canadian fuckers' to mean that he liked the Vancouver crowd, so come on Americans, show them what you're really made of.

was it cold inside the key arena? why didn't the owner's of the arena have the heat on? how do you go to a rock show & have your hand's in your pocket's, and look like a zombie stoned to death, during the show? it's like those day's when you used to go to church every sunday. where your parent's used to tell you when you were kids to get your hand's out of your pocket's, "you're in god's house!"
