SolarWorld - I have a couple of questions for you. First of all - what have you done for yourself or for anyone else by making the statements you've made? You have failed to better yourself, or right the wrongs that you seem to believe are around here, but have succeeded at putting people down.. I'd call that purposeless, and if you have no purpose in what you say or what you do, what's the point?
Second, you seem to be living by a set of double-standards.. you call people infantile, and you also call them moronic and dirt bags. Huh?
Finally - I personally (and I would imagine many others on here have as well) pre-ordered the album on vinyl and on CD, and if I see it on a torrent site, I will download it. Frankly, I see no reason to pass judgment on people as 'awful people' when they have full intentions of supporting the band. I am not taking any profit (or even potential profit) away from the band from my downloading of their album before-hand... and that's even if it WERE leaked, which it's not.

but... if you DL it from a torrent, and then leave it up, someone could DL it and not buy the album.

it goes in circles. i think it sucks myself, but also know that the industry brought it on its self.

p.s. i have DL albums myself, some i buy and some i dont. so i'm not judging anyone here, but i see solars argument, i just dont agree with the name calling.

I see the point also, but if someone sees the torrent the day of the album release they could still DL it and not buy the album. There's no way to prevent that. Most of us who really want to hear it early are the hardcore fans that have already preordered.

I'm not exactly the most positive and well liked poster around here but virtually all of your posts are negative, cocky bullshit. And you very obviously do care what people think about you if you take the time to respond and defend yourself. In honor of you, i'm going to go steal some music right now and since I pre-ordered the CD from the Ten Club, I fully plan on downloading the album when it leaks. I will be sure to let you and your "friends in the business" know how it is.

Benj - to your last comment, I think Solar already answered that for you. He said you become part of the distributorship of the illegally uploaded music. As soon as your torrent finishes, you become a seeder and thus a partial provider of the album to anyone on the web with a torrent program. Unless you are going to claim you close your torrent program the second your torrents finish downloading...which I doubt. You may have ordered the album, but most people on a torrent site are there to obtain the music for free right?

i guess this is what i was trying to say.

being in a band myself and seeing how things have changed maybe makes me think about it different.

realistically it does not matter. people that dont want to pay for it will get it for for free weather not not any of us download it and seed it.

Personally, I do close the torrent as soon as it's downloaded.

At the end of the day, the people who don't like to pay for records, will be able to get it for free in a couple of weeks when it's released anyway - they're no more likely to pay for it then than they would now.

Actually, I do, believe it or not, but I can't claim they're for good reasons, just that I live in a house with six other people with mediocre internet.. while downloading torrents, I leave it uploading at about 10kb/s, and when the cue's done, I have my torrent program set to close. I hadn't even thought of that, but I see where you and SolarWorld are coming from on that.

I agree they will get it for free if they want, but why would you want to be an enabler? It just seems like a cop-out excuse for those people who can't wait for the album to come out to justify their actions.

As soon as you have a large enough "piece" downloaded, you will seed it as soon as someone connects to you. You are seeding as you download.

ah...the worst kind of torrent downloader. Willing to receive but not to share the goods. How nice. ;)

that's actually kind of a good point. People downloading before the release date are most likely to be the ones who would pay for it (possibly more than once over the years after their first copy gets worn and scratched to shit). It's the casual listeners who'll be jackin' it when it's readily available in october and november. So therefore, it's only okay to download an album before its release date. I can't see anything ethically wrong there, except that it is a little bit weak in terms of will power, to which I will reply: guilty!

  • i should have went to a real board for an actual discussion about the new record, instead of this board thats filled with a bunch of tools trying to act like bigger and better fans of the band, its really pathetic, going back to red mosquito, where cool pj fans exist, peace.

First off, the Red Mosquito board is full of douchebags. They won't even share mp3s with ya unless you have enough posts...which is the lamest thing I've ever seen.

But anyway, of course there's going to be a backlash to your "review". None of us have heard the album yet. And while we wait for it, we don't exactly want to hear a negative review from someone who has it three weeks early.

it's not an excuse it's a reality. i don't have to justify my actions to anyone because i am a realistic person and in reality me downloading an album that i have already paid for and will pay for again affects no one. if it makes you (not you specifically) feel morally superior and thats how you need to feel then dont download it....just dont come here and crusade against downloading when the vast majority of the people on this site have already bought it.

Like someone else said, the people who tend to download leaks are the hardcore fans - you would have to be searching all the time. Therefore if you make that much effort, you are more then likely to have pre-ordered anyway.

It's not a cop out - for a lot of people, enjoyment of music comes from the gut, call it a weakness in my personality, but I'd like to think I have other redeeming qualities   . And like I said before, most people are guilty of speeding in their cars, which is equally illegal, and has possibly lethal consequences unlike downloading a record.

Actually, it doesn't. Maybe the OP could update his first post, as he has explained that he has a source in the biz who gave him the ability to listen to it a few times, and he no longer has the album. I like this thread quite a bit, personally, as I feel like, more than anything, it's promoting a good, open discussion about a relevant topic.

(ill preface this with knowledge of my exrtemely high standards for pj)meh, thats my original feeling right after ive listened to it three times now, starts off strong real strong with gonna see... got some(my favorite song so far)andthe fixer but then seems to lose direction after that, still a decent album but like s/t doesnt have great flow or purpose, johnny guitar is a song that will probably grow on me as i listen to it more, just breathe is a beautiful song, amongst the waves was the one song besides got some and the end that i was really excited for and its just ok, maybe im just sick of water and ocean references in almost all of their songs lately, unthought known, meh ok tune, supersonic most of us had already heard andi like it fun fast song, speed of sound is another ok track along with force of nature just pretty forgettable and maybe im noticing as much as i love matt cameron maybe hes too much of a good thing it seems with matt pj tries to cram too much music into their songs and it crowds up the flow of their mojo, maybe its just me, but the final take, the end is another cool ed song as always pj has always had great bookends with their albums and the end leaves you wanting more, again no terrible political songs here, the worst backspacer tracks are still quality tracks, just not much ooo and aaahhhs here i think got some and just breathe will be the follow up singles,i give it 3.5 outta 5 stars, peace.
It was the longest sequence I've read in my life...

  • The "illegal" downloading (sharing) of music has helped more bands than it has hurt. It has hurt more record companies than it has helped. Spread the music, and support them when they come to town.
  • having read all of this and thought through it and discussed it with many people before, I'd like to say that while I must admit that I do download albums from bands that I love before the release dates (because of impatience), I personally would like to see some sort of system that puts creative control of how an album is released go back into the hands of the bands (not record companies).

I really do remember the thrill of getting no code and going down into my room and saying to my parents 'see you in a week'.

This lack of leak has shown that maybe it's possible again. I dunno.

Can anyone envision a foolproof system where we'd actually see albums see the light of day on a specific date?

edit: also, I remember reading in an interview with Eddie probably 12 years ago that he'd love it if one day they could just release an album and have it show up on the shelves of stores without any hype and without people really knowing about it. I wonder if that is possible. Probably not, but that would be cool.
