I agree. I think The White Album is their best album, but I don't think it's a class above everything else they did. Quite a few of their other albums give it a run for its money.

The White Album isn't as good as Revolver, Abbey Road, or Sgt Pepper. It has the most great songs, but as an album it just has too much filler.

I have to say I'm really disappointed they limited the number of mono sets being produced. I wish the would have just had one box set, not limited in production, with the stereo and mono releases. Then for those not interested in the whole set could buy the individual stereo releases. It's just a real shame so many people will go without hearing the mono releases, as (from the albums I've heard so far) they're fantastic.

Don't get me wrong, the stereo releases are superb as well, but people should really have a chance to get their hands on the mono set.

For me, I got the stereo set for economical reasons. I couldn't justify spending $50 more for the mono set and it is missing 3 albums. Even though hardcores say the mono is better, I just want all the albums remastered. I am happy with my choice.

I disagree. And I'm not trying to say it's better than this or not as good as that. But I don't think The White Album has filler. Songs like Bungalo Bill, Honey Pie, Revolution 9 and Piggies have been damned by some as being "filler" but at the end of the day, I wouldn't want to drop any of them from the album.

As for Revolver, I always thought that And Your Bird Can Sing was total filler.

I'm not talkin about those tunes.

    Back In the USSR
both Revolutions suck and they left the good one off
    Wild Honey Pie
    Glass Onion
    Martha My Dear
    Don't Pass Me By
Why Don't We Do It In the Road
    Yer Blues
    Honey Pie.....

are all pretty weak, imo. They could have made a great single album out of it

Back in the USSR is my favorite song of all-time by any artist. A work that I not only find to be a perfectly constructed rock n roll song, but a work of true genius in both homage and parody....be it the ridiculously sarcastic verses, the title, or the Beach Boys-parodying chorus (to go on top of bad ass singing and piano playing by Paul). In light of this, I can no longer converse with you here on the Tenclub message board, DewieCox. Nothing personal. But referring to Back in the USSR as filler......you're dead to me.

Sorry about your taste in music. :D Your fave song of all time? Interesting.

I wouldn't call it filler, it's just a boring song to me. I admit I did have trouble including it on my list, though.

I kind've agree with you except to call Back in the USSR filler is a sin! I'm not a big fan of disc 2 so I think the album would be much stronger if it was just disc 1. That's not to say I don't like any of the songs on disc 2, however they are just weaker for me.

As it stands now, I would easily put the three albums you listed above the White Album.

alright you're not dead to me. but yes, it's my favorite song of all time. I don't know how you can find it boring but to each their own I guess.

I guess this is a good time to relate the story of the first time I ever listened to the White Album since it concerns Back in the USSR. When I was in elementary school, my exposure to the Beatles were the three records my father owned (Sgt. Peppers, Abbey Road, Let It Be). I played them all the time and loved them and obsessed over them like everyone else ind the world did. When I was around 10 or so, I started asking for Beatles CDs for birthdays/christmas to gain as much as I could. I amassed the above mentioned albums along with Magical Mystery Tour, Revolver, Rubber Soul, and A Hard Day's Night. This was my Beatles collection until I was about 16 and I came across the White Album in a store. I knew it existed of course...but I just never got around to getting it or researching it or anything like that. I was FLOORED when I read the back cover and noticed over 25 BEATLES SONGS that I've never heard before. The only titles that were familiar to me from talking to my dad were Helter Skelter, Rocky Raccoon, and Revolution 9. It was overwhelming.

16 was about the time I started smoking pot. And this is back when if you smoked pot, you got REALLY high. And my first listen of the White Album in my bedroom was probably the greatest musical moment of my life...better than even the many PJ concerts I've attended. And it of course all starts with Back in the USSR. Again, I was floored when I heard this. I was thinking to myself "Well I've never heard him sing like THIS." It was trip man. Every song. I mean....we've all listened to it a thousand times. But again, the variety of music is just astounding. You can play Piggies for someone and say it's The Beatles and they'd be like "really??" and then you can play Helter Skelter to them and say it's the same band and they'd be like "REALLY??"

Maybe "filler" is a weak term to use (especially since I just got all bent out of shape for DewieCox saying USSR is filler). Let's just say it's my least favorite song on Revolver.

The 4 remasters I bought all sound amazing to me. I'm planning to get more, but they were almost sold out the other night. Best to break it up anyway.

    1. Abbey Road... sounds even more mind-blowing than ever before.
    2. White Album... I used to think there was a ton of filler on this, and there is some, but it's still an incredible album and sounds edgier than ever.
    3. Revolver... didn't sound dramatically different to me like some of the others, but Tomorrow Never Knows... holy shit...
    4. Sgt. Pepper's... huge improvement here, everything is warmer and fuller and it sounds so much livelier on this remaster than it ever did on cd.

I respect your opinion...Buuuutt....I disagree about the filler. IMO the White Album has no filler. There are no songs on it that I skip. As you know It's a long album - double album - and personally I can play it from start to finish with no skipping of tracks - something I find I can do with only a handful of albums out there.
This is one of the albums - along with Electric Ladyland - that got me through a 12 hour night shift in a plastics factory for a couple of years. I'm indebted to it. :P

Oh, and for the record, I still don't like Paul McCartney.

For the fact that it's probably the 1st double album in rock, alone, I can't argue against it's greatness. Has some of my absolute favorite Beatles tunes and a couple of really great "odd" tracks. I just think the more looked over the basics a little, I guess, though it doesn't get much better than Helter Skelter for straight up ass kickin rock and roll.

None of these woulda been possible without it.
    Electric Ladyland
    Physical Graffiti
    The Wall

Just an instinctive thing. He rubs me the wrong way.

Is your username the Ramones name for Mr Burns on that Simpsons episode? I was humming the "happy birthday byrnzie" song to myself this morning and it clicked.

Nah, my surname's Byrne. My nickname's Byrnzie.

After listening to the catalog over a few days, here is my ranking. Like my PJ album ranking, I'm sure this will change over time.

    1. Abbey Road
    2. Revolver
    3. Sgt Pepper
    4. White Album (close call between 3 and 4)
    5. Rubber Soul
    6. MMT
    7. Hard Day's Night
    8. Let it Be
    9. With the Beatles
    9. Help! (Tied)
    11. Please Please Me
    12. Beatles for Sale (This is the only one I couldn't get all the way through  )

Wow I have a very similar list to this one. I would put Revolver above Abbey Road, move Help! up 3 spots, and of course throw Yellow Submarine on the end of the list just to include it.

You guys are killing me. I can't wait till I find another job so I can look into buying some of these. I'll probably have to go with Let It Be and Abbey Road since those are two of the only Beatles albums I don't already have on CD.
Oh, and the White Album is THE album. If they had made it into a single disc and gotten rid of all the "filler", it wouldn't have been the same album at all, and in my opinion it would have been kind of bland. The strange short songs are what make it amazing.
