So, I have been a fan ever since I watched the Jeremy video on my BA flight from Durban to Los Angeles in December 1991. It was my first trip to the US, grunge was massive, and that now legendary "10" cover was in every record store. I fell in love with their music immediately, and have been in love ever since. But living in a country and on a continent where they just never tour meant that I had never been priviledged to see them live ... until Tuesday 11 August 2009! I had been dreaming of the day for 17 years, and I was not disappointed. I have read some of the comments here about people being disappointed with the gig. Granted I have not been to as many gigs as some of the people on here. And I know how much effort so many of you put into following this amazing band. But, no matter how many gigs I see (and I hope it's many ... bring on the o2 next week!!!), or how much effort I put into getting to a gig, I can honestly say that after experiencing what I experienced on Tuesday I can't imagine ever walking away from a PJ gig saying I felt disappointed.

I have not stopped grinning since Tuesday. Elderly Woman, Given to Fly, Alive, Yellow Ledbetter, State of Love and Trust ... with each song my grin just got wider and wider. I am so excited for the o2 that I can hardly concentrate on anything else. And, I am now more in love with this band and their music than I have ever been at any point in the last 17 years ...

I just feel the sense of occasion surrounding the Astoria gig was more intense and I feel the band's performance that night reflected that. It is a pity that many here feel that if we don't pay total homage or if we dare to voice our opinions that somehow makes us lesser fans. I think the opposite is true. Once you lose your objectivity it just becomes blind acceptance (as someone once sang! lol). If anyone wants to debate the pro's and cons over a few beers in Berlin on Friday or Saturday come say hello!

With respect, I think it's a pity that some people are arrogant enough to believe that their personal experience is somehow fact. I'm not blindly accepting anything. The Astoria gig was great for a number of reasons, not least because they hadn't played here in six years. But, it was a short show, probably a bit too much new material for my liking too. That's not to say I didn't enjoy it, but last night's show had a better set list in my opinion. I think the band and audience seemed really into it, there were some truly incredible moments, the sound was great from where I was standing, what's not to like?

I think it's odd that you would talk about blind acceptance and losing objectivity when you are putting forth nothing other than your own experience and opinion.

Er, it's a discussion forum. It is all about everyone's experience and opinion, surely? Of course I am putting forward my own experience and opinion. Aren't you doing exactly the same? So you preferred last night to the Astoria. Does that make you arrogant for asserting that 'fact'? No it doesn't and I don't appreciate that 'criticism' being levelled at me for my opinion that the Astoria was better. Constructive discussion is healthy. Why not join in?

because you are clearly wrong :)

    still buzzing about this now.

Given to fly was euphoric...but isnt it always??

You said it Yeehare; we backed a winner. Today it seems I am 'working from home' on the pearl jam message board. Think I better at least have a wash. Clearly the real world doesn't obey SBE time! hehe.

Review in from The Londonist (can't see that it's been posted anywhere else...)

    http://londonist.com/2009/08/live_music ... hepher.php

We'll save you the suspense on this one. As the intense competition for tickets suggested, general expectations for this week's Pearl Jam gig at the Shepherd's Bush Empire were sky high. Or possibly a bit higher.

Yet despite this, the American grunge-rockers somehow managed to exceed our hopes in emphatic style, producing a performance of such quality and emotion that it's sending shivers down this Londonista's spine just thinking about it.

From the moment front man Eddie Vedder strode on stage, it was clear this was going be very special. They opened with Sometimes to huge applause, surfing through the first three tracks on a wave of pure joy before introducing Ronnie Wood for a frankly awe-inspiring cover of All Along the Watchtower.

It says something when you've got one of the Stones playing a supporting role, and the reaction to that moment cemented the sort of connection between audience and band that we've never seen before.

Perhaps it was the tension that builds after two-and-a-half hours without even the distraction of a support act. Maybe it was the collective feeling of good fortune at being there at all (if you were the guy with the rueful smile and the massive "please please please I need one ticket" sign, we really hope you got in).

But more than anything, we think the euphoric atmosphere was down to the simple fact that so many people in that little venue cared so much about this huge band.

The mass singalongs were enough to drown out Vedder's vocals at points, and with the crowd acting as one it seemed like the whole of the standing section was the mosh pit. In fact, the building did well to take the strain.

As for the set? They played big hitters like Even Flow, Alive and Given to Fly, new material from their forthcoming album and, during the second encore, a cover of The Who's The Real Me. Another special guest joined the band for that one: Simon Townshend (Pete's brother) who recovered well after a brief problem with an out-of-tune guitar.

The most-overhead word as people spilled out onto Shepherd's Bush Green at the end? "Unbelievable." Because it was.

Pearl Jam play the O2 next week. Tickets apparently sold out in twenty minutes, but if you persevere you might be able to find one somehow.
  • This may have already been posted but what was the cover they played before betterman as itas not listed on the setlist..

Having had my shower at 11am, I decided the best use of my time during this morning's home working period would be to recreate the SBE set on my itunes library, which I often do after a show (mainly studio versions). For the common good of humanity of course.

I know it's terribly rock and roll behaviour isn't it? You know on Tuesday night we were even allowed to dance in the aisles for a few seconds. I discovered that if you only allowed 25% of your body to exceed the allocated space, then you were actually allowed to remain there, flagrantly breaching fire safety regulations.

Anyway, it is clear to me from listening to this set a few times now, that there is a definite thematic link between every song. If you recognise (as I do), some of PJ's major lyrical themes being love, sex, abuse, mental health, family, war, relationships, society (you can insert a few of your own here). This was definitely a set on the 'mental health' theme. In fact SBE is clearly to me the 'Inside Job' show. Even the songs which cross into some of the other themes retain a strong 'inner' component. I didn't notice this at the time, but the impact on me was there anyway.

Consider the big 2 covers. The lyrics to all along the watchtower are a pretty early statement of intent aren't they? Let's not talk falsely now. It's getting late. We've been through this. (the dylan, hendrix, stones,pj, thread running through this bit was pretty damned powerful in my view. They are nailing this one down with a bit of northwest / south london rock and roll connection)

So lyrically, every word going on record here is connected I think, and it unfolds from one to another. This is why I think it was so powerful for me in particular. It is words that always underpin my music, and the words here were very cohesive. There are certain songs which I think would have totally thrown this theory out, and a lot of them are missing! (I'm not sure about DTE, but pretty much everything else)

I wasn't planning to start a piece of literary crit here, although anyone who wants to go through every or any lyric in this set with me, or dispute this interpretation I'd be interested in exploring it in another thread.

No, what I really wanted to do, seeing as we're amongst trusted friends here is just to go out on a limb a bit further, and make my own dedication of this song to my mother, angel, forever frozen driving me in a car in 1996, not knowing which side to fall, or which decision to make. She made the hardest one, since we know escape is never the safest path....we're still alive. it was right to fold.

Still on a high from SBE gig. Loved every minute. How's Eddie thanking the crowd all the time? I'm like 'no, thank YOU Pearl Jam'. And Ten Club too! Agree, The Fixer goes off live. Had it in my head on a run last night and it kept my speed up! Would have loved to hear my fave Rearview Mirror but hey, if they played every hit, plus more obscure, the new ones, just Eddie and his guitar, AND some covers with rock legends we'd still be there...ahhh if only.

One of the best gigs I have ever heard. Couldn't see a damn thing like, being on the ground floor, but enjoyed it all the same. Even cried through 'Elderly Woman'!

Met all the band after wainting 3 hours outside, well worth it. Thanks Pearl Jam, see you next week!

  • I for one thought it was f***ing immense. I had the time of my life. Lots of jumping around, singing and smiley faces everywhere I looked (altough the VIP's sat in the reserved seats on the first balcony looked a truely misserable bunch). We met loads of lovely people before the gig and altough the 2 hour wait was a bit of a bummer we met loads of great people and the time actually went really quickly when we got chatting to the blonde haired guy stood outside with the HUGE sign wanting a ticket and the very kind soul who sold him his spare at face value.

I'm actually dreading Manchester now because I know it can't be as good as SBE.

Thank you Pearl Jam for an epic night never to be forgotten.

It's good isn't it? I must remember to thank the photographer again! She does a good job. I am gaining some face! At the moment I feel like I'm hoovering up and acquiring lots of positive energy that seems have been dug out of london. We're like the gulls, london is the field, pearl jam are the farmer, and ed is the fucking combine harvester! I don't know how he can turn over and recycle such negative energy. The guy is seriously connected to the source. Was pleased to hear Yusuf was in the room actually.

    Truly awesome gig :D:D:D

The band looked like they were really enjoying themselves, especially the crowd singalongs, I loved hearing Sometimes, The Real Me and SOLDIER OF LOVE  :D , Present Tense was just brilliant

I haven't read anywhere in this thread about Eddie's semi moonwalk off the stage at the end of the main set. The band went to leave via Stone's side but couldn't for some reason so turned and went off Mike's way instead, but Ed kind of moonwalked backwards towards Mike's side :D

Agree some of those VIPs looked so disinterested - or at least more interested in looking cool than enjoying the gig of the year. It's a pity that bands still have to pander to some of these industry types. But I suppose it's not entirely a bad thing - the place was set to explode with energy as is. If they'd booted out the posers and replaced them with true fans it might just have been too much for SBE to withstand!
