I just feel the sense of occasion surrounding the Astoria gig was more intense and I feel the band's performance that night reflected that. It is a pity that many here feel that if we don't pay total homage or if we dare to voice our opinions that somehow makes us lesser fans. I think the opposite is true. Once you lose your objectivity it just becomes blind acceptance (as someone once sang! lol). If anyone wants to debate the pro's and cons over a few beers in Berlin on Friday or Saturday come say hello!
With respect, I think it's a pity that some people are arrogant enough to believe that their personal experience is somehow fact. I'm not blindly accepting anything. The Astoria gig was great for a number of reasons, not least because they hadn't played here in six years. But, it was a short show, probably a bit too much new material for my liking too. That's not to say I didn't enjoy it, but last night's show had a better set list in my opinion. I think the band and audience seemed really into it, there were some truly incredible moments, the sound was great from where I was standing, what's not to like?
I think it's odd that you would talk about blind acceptance and losing objectivity when you are putting forth nothing other than your own experience and opinion.
Sometimes I start doubting my opinion....so THANK YOU...I think last night was better than the Astoria aswell. The Astoria setlist was weird. Can't put my finger on it. Last night was a proper show setlist. Present Tense floored me...lost my breath on trying to keep up with singing along to got some (impossible to sing all the way through!).
Last night was immense. Beats Astoria definitely.

Of course it's all opinion, but when you start getting people saying "I've seen them all over the world, blah blah blah" my instant thought is "fucking spare me!". All it really means is you have a frame of reference and comparison for your OWN experiences. And when people say stuff like 'the sound was bad' - well yeah, if you were standing front-row on Mike's side, you probably weren't getting the best sound balance! Present Tense was a definite highlight for me too!

Er, it's a discussion forum. It is all about everyone's experience and opinion, surely? Of course I am putting forward my own experience and opinion. Aren't you doing exactly the same? So you preferred last night to the Astoria. Does that make you arrogant for asserting that 'fact'? No it doesn't and I don't appreciate that 'criticism' being levelled at me for my opinion that the Astoria was better. Constructive discussion is healthy. Why not join in?

You basically implied that because you've seen them loads of times at various places, you some how have a better understanding or appreciation for the finer points of a Pearl Jam show. It's fine if you want to believe that, but I don't appreciate being told that I'm "blindly accepting" and "losing objectivity" just because I don't agree with you. That is why I singled you out, not because you were chosing to express your opinion.
Agreed. The only thing that I can perceive as a negative, and I was there at 11.30AM waiting outside to get a decent spot on the floor. I've never arrived to a show that early before and I probably won't now for a while without a good reason. It was the first time I've seen the band live and learned one lesson, if you don't have a 10C ticket (with early entry) don't bother showing up early. I'm going to see the Pixies at Brixton later in the year and I won't arrive until later in the day so it will be interesting to compare the experience.
I probably sound like I'm going on a whinge so I'll stop now. If I wasn't carrying my poster tube I would have been jumping around in the pit and I might have even done a bit of crowd surfing
Chris here-I guess it's you we were standing next to in the queue. I lost you as soon as it started. The pit was full on.
Don't be despondant about 10club tickets and getting in early. Darren and I are both in the fan club and we had to settle for normal tickets because there weren't enough to go around. 10club is only £15 a year and is well worth it. Darren and I should be up the front for Manchester.
Hope you enjoyed it in the end.

I only got to Page 5 of the thread, then felt I had to post something. We all have our opinion, and I respect all those opinions but, here goes...
I was on the floor by the back bar, with my brother in law who has never seen them before, a neutral if you like, he happens to be a drummer and sound tech, he was blown away by the whole show.
I'll agree the atmosphere before they came on lacked, but once they hit the stage, it was awesome.
Sound quality? Amazing
Ronnie Wood? Who did you want, Hendrix himself? Jimmy Page? Wood was excellent, his free form towards the end was mind blowing.
2 neck guitars? Shows exactly how good, technically and musically Mike is. I've another mate who's a guitarist and doesn't like Pearl Jam one bit. Showed him a few DVDs in the past and he was awe struck at how good Mike is.
Not enough B-sides? Stop being so damn precious.
Upset personally at not hearing Black, but the set-list was awesome, and I can live with it.
Bands evolve over time and mature, Pearl Jam have done just that.
This was a once in a lifetime experience for a lot of people.
Rant over, Peace, see you at The O2.
The fact that I have seen them many times and in many locations gives me my own personal perspective, not better or finer, merely my own. Thanks for singling me out. I'll remember to check the party line before expressing myself in future.
Personally I think it's useful to have some firmer 'reality checks' from people who have a completely different assessment, and I thought your posts made a lot of sense and were well argued Ron, so thanks. I agree, the worst thing is if anyone felt they have to be positive about the band. It becomes dishonest, and a cult, and not credible. The fact that my experience at Shepherd's Bush last night was more on the 'near mystical experience' / 'sublime religious revelation' side of the rock concert spectrum shouldn't detract from your ability to remind us that Ron Wood is probably a complete wanker
(which I thought you put forward a good case for by the way)
[edit, for the casual reader, this last sentence was me trying to crack a poor joke & insert a bit of good old British tongue in cheek, which a, doesn't work well in print, b, often upsets non-brits, and c, caused me quite a lot of trouble in my previous stint here. I can't bring myself to use a 'lol' I'm sorry. I live in the land of Shakespeare and Shelley, they are surely turning in their graves at the sight of this phrase!)]
For me it was the symbolic part of his input, almost like an induction of the seattle boys into our more venerated and mature Great British rock and roll traditions. I thought PJ looked the part jamming with him, in fact the sound coming out of all those fucking guitars at that point was seriously exciting, and I thought 'this ain't grunge, it's just fckin rock and roll'. Whatever.
Anyway, I also thought the guy you were arguing with (facepollution) was pretty eloquent, so it's unfortunate you were at odds!
To be honest the most shocking part of last night was being able to stand up and go to the bar at a major rock gig and not face one single other person in the queue. It was strangely surreal, especially compared to how hectic it all was outside the venue. Like being at the eye of the hurricance. Everything slowed. We were in a little bubble in the middle of london. For me it was all special.
Anyway, no doubt there will be many killer shows this year. If any of us are lucky enough to attend more than one PJ show a tour, at least one of them is quite likely to be worth telling the grandchildren about!

Hey! Yeah I couldn't see you after they started. I tried to stay where I was but managed to get dragged a bit nearer to the front and almost knocked over, all good fun though.
Last night I popped my Pearl Jam cherry! I have nothing to compare it with, so for me, it was the best Pearl Jam gig ever!!!
I managed to get loads of pics but this is one of my favs. I'm gonna get a poster made of it.
Nice godammn photo! That is the spirit of pearl jam right there. I'm so loved up currently though, I'm probably not the best judge!
Think I'm gonna put that as my wallpaper now. Can I make a mousemat?
You look like you know what you are doing with that lens!
Thats an awesome first gig, it was my 4th and i swear they just get better and better.
love the photo as well, great seeing them in such a small venue with the crowd so close. wonder how the band feels after playing massive arenas, and then getting to do something special like this.
Wow! what an amazing show. Didnt know i was going until Sunday night (thanks for the ticket Paul) and was well worth it. Great setlist, crowd were squeezing me into the front barriers all night, lost abit of weight and nearly all the water in my body but was superb! Even met Stone, Boom and Mr Vedder after the show which made it even more amazing and got them to sign a picture. Great guys. Other than that the only complaint was the Wimpy burger with 15 chips i ate on the way to London which cost £6, and a stupid ozzie bird who kept elbowing me all night (its okay, she fainted during the 1st encore and was ejected).

Holy good bejaysus, last night was one of the best nights of my life. I was up front at the barrier with my girlfriend on Mike's side and we both had a ball! I loved the setlist as it was a bit different from what I had seen before and they played Present Tense and Inside Job so I was very happy!
At the end when Mike threw all his picks into the crowd I and the guy to my left missed out but Mike went and found a couple more and handed them to us! It was just an awesome way to end the night and it was just so cool to get a pick handed to me by my the guitarist who has influenced my playing so much over the last few years.
It was also cool to meet some fellow 10C folk, although i didn't talk much because I'm a shy bastard when meeting new people!
I got loads of good photos, so I'm going to try and get them uploaded.

Ok, so don't accuse people of "blindly accepting" and "losing objectivity". By using those terms, you are impying that you have objectivity and a more 'realistic' appreciation of the show - based purely on your prior experience of shows. I'm merely pointing out that unless one show goes drastically wrong, there is no real 'objective' way of saying one is better than another.
By the way, you're welcome, I'll always point out when someone is being a complete hypocrite.
Eddie Vedders shirt last night was the old LA hardcore punk band FEAR from the 80's. As a guy that grew up on hardcore and punk, the fact that he was wearing a shirt of a great and yet very obscure band outside of hardcore circles put a massive smile on my face.
I love PJ more and more every single day. My poster from the show is already framed and on the wall haha

Apologies, I'll hush up now.......and maybe try and work out how the hell to post my EV pic in a size where people can actually tell who it is......

what sort of time did the guys come out then?
Well, we hung around till about 1.30am i think, missed Mike, Matt and Jeff as we were standing at the wrong end of the alley where the stage door was so were made a quick run round the back of the building and lo and behold Mr Gossard makes an appearance, then boom and finally the Eddie. Some pics of them below, got Stone and Booms autograph and shook Eddie's hand and said 'hi Ed' in a trembling voice. Great guys.
eddie was the only one who came up to the barrier at the far end. very cool of him. Boom gave us a wave when we called him. we stayed at that end purely out of stubborness, hoping that eddie would come over if he knew there were people there, and sure enough he did.....legend.
Just saw that Tenclub got my video of The End taken down from Youtube, didn't occur to me that they wouldn't want it out there, I guess it's because it's new? :?

Apologies, I'll hush up now.......and maybe try and work out how the hell to post my EV pic in a size where people can actually tell who it is......
Great guys.
Wow, I am in the bad books with 10c today
Who is wrong and who’s right
