    Incredible gig.

Queued up from 12pm to get to the barrier, managed to get right in front of Stone - sounded incredible.
Vedder also gave me a bottle of wine in Yellow Ledbetter, but it got jacked lol.
Here are some sweet photos I managed to get:

  • NME's write-up of the show...
Pearl Jam were joined onstage by The Rolling Stones' Ronnie Wood as they made their UK live comeback at London's O2 Shepherds Bush Empire last night (August 11).

Playing in front of fanclub members who packed the venue, the Seattle band saw early tracks like 'Why Go' and 'Diffident' rapturously received by the crowd, while poppy new single 'The Fixer', from their forthcoming album, 'Backspacer', also drew loud applause.

Frontman Eddie Vedder was in humorous form throughout the show, asking the crowd about the episode of reality TV show 'Big Brother' he'd watched in his hotel the night before.

"It was just some people sleeping," he puzzled. "Do you know that show? I couldn't bear the tension."

Early in the set, Vedder introduced Wood onstage, who then led the band through a bluesy version of Bob Dylan's 'All Along the Watchtower', during which he traded licks with guitarists Mike McCready and Stone Gossard.

Pearl Jam later played a lengthy version of 'Even Flow' and their 1991 debut single 'Alive', which provoked a mass sing-a-long from the capacity crowd.

The band returned for two encores, which included fan favourite 'Last Exit' and solo spot from Vedder for new song 'The End'. And the band also played another classic cover - The Who's 'The Real Me' - with help on guitar from Pete Townshend's brother Simon, who is also a member of The Who's touring band.

At the end of their two-and-a-half hour set the band then took a collective bow as a humbled Vedder thanked the crowd for their support throughout the years.

Last night was the first time I've seen the band live, really enjoyed it. The only thing that irked me was having people push past me to get nearer. I thought there was going to be a fight between two men after one of them pushed in front of the other :?

Does that mean i can't wear my Down On The Upside 1996 Tour T-shirt on Monday? :o

  • Personally I think Astoria was better. Only by a small amount. Must have been the anticipation back then. And it was a better setlist (slightly).

I thought they should have given mike more space on his side of the stage-he seemed awfully cramped!! Move Eddie and Jeff over a bit.
I made a mistake of turning up at 9am without tenclub tickets, just regular standing. It was bloody annoying to have waited all day only to see 400 people walk in right past me after being one of the first 10 there. I could have arrived at 1pm and got the same place in the venue.
Mark my words I will be front row manchester.

Some people are never satisfied and it's a bit of a shame really. just be thankful you were one of the 3,000 who got in there, and even better for you if you payed £40 rather than £140 or whatever ridiculous price they were going for.

Fans queue outside sold-out Pearl Jam gig

12.08.09 Two fans desperate to see grunge veterans Pearl Jam had smiles on their faces after being handed free tickets to their gig.

Hundreds of music lovers queued for hours outside the O2 Empire in Shepherd's Bush in an attempt to see the sell-out, one-off concert at the venue last night.

The band's publicist Barbara Charone took pity on two of the crowd at the last minute and presented them with the tickets.
So are we strangers now? Like rock and roll and the radio?

Pearl Jam, Shepherd's Bush Empire - review
A vintage Pearl Jam set (with a surprise appearance from Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood) shows off fan favourites and highlights from 26 years and nine studio albums

    by: James Gill
    12 August 2009

    Rating: 4/5

THEIR upcoming album points to a sunnier tomorrow, but this was vintage Pearl Jam last night: passion, pain, and a thoroughly polished set, packed with fan favourites.

And this was all about the fans; a gig for fan club members ahead of a mini European tour and the new LP, Backspacer, out next month.
There has always been something visceral about the bond between Pearl Jam and their fans, borne of lyrics that actually mean something, blistering live sets, and the intensity of Eddie Vedder, the charismatic and, at times, troubled, front man.

And that energy was in full effect last night as, over 26 songs and two hours 20 minutes, the Seattle five-piece rattled out stone-cold classics (Alive, Corduroy, Yellow Ledbetter), covers (Ronnie Wood joining them on stage for All Along the Watchtower), and three from Backspacer.

The End is heartbreaking stuff ("I just want to hold on and know I’m worth your love, and I don’t think there’s such a thing") but Got Some and the pop-tastic The Fixer, in particular, suggest a more optimistic outlook. After nine studio albums and 18 years as a band, that can be no bad thing.

it wasn't a gig for fan club members at all!! if it was then we wouldn't have had to enter in to a lottery and i wouldn't have disappointed and not got tix!!! not that i'm bitter or anything! ;)

Nice show, the band were meant to come on at 8:30pm, but seemed to drag on till 8:45pm, ed was rather chatty.

People will kill me for saying this but i do feel a bit let down, i was hoping for some real nice rare songs but still seemed mainstreamy, roll on The Ahoy! Maybe seem rare to some people but heard all these songs many a time :P

Nothing from binaural yet on this tour :(

Even flow wasn't original studio but it did feel slower.

There were 2 mics both sides of the each poking out into the crowd, then again this could be them just recording every show that they do. I know Sandra and Randell taped it, think someone else too.

Yep, you've totally lost me. Im struggling with this obsession with rare songs on here. They are rare for a reason, and thats usually because they are not that good.

I was over the moon with the show, though it was fucking wonderful. Awesome, spellbinding etc etc, Pearl jam looked very up for it, Jeff was throwing the moves, eddie was charged up and Mike was on fire. Stone was even giving it some, and faced the crowd for the majority of the show for once!!!

Man it was stunning. I dont go to these places with a setlist already in my head. I go to see what they throw at me and enjoy it for what it is. and they played some seriously good stuff last night.

For the record Light years was on the set last night but got struck off for watchtower, what would you rather have? Binaural is hardly a well loved record aty the best of times.

That venue was superb also, Pearl jam just raised the bar once again. They have a lot to do in berlin and manchester and london after this one.

Mert eddie outside too, and gotta say hes a very down to earth, warming, welcoming, friendly and above all approachable guy, man that blew me away. he was so cool. Took time to make sure he shook everyones hand, however had to keep the promise he made to the security not to sign things before they let him go out. Still he chatted for a while and took my request for comeback at berlin, so lets see about that.

Also met stone, and Boom, who were both great, and I quote Stone
'This record is fucking amazing, really it blows me away' when asked what he thought of the record. maybe the expected answer from someone in the band, but still great to hyear the enthusiam he answered with.

I msised mike, jeff and Matt, got the wrong place with them, but thats life.

My reeenk roink is now embossed with Stones signature...whooo hooooo

seriously anyone, who puts a dampener on this show, for me has lost the plot. and for me thats a typical reminder of why pearl jam now have the impossible task on their hands, they cannot please people no matter what they do. They could have played a bunch of rare songs, and then people would have whinged they didnt get alive and betterman.

To be fair though from where i was (front barrier) the crowd looked to be having a great time.

    Roll on berlin...

a big shout out to Niko - legend...good to meet you man
Karon - a rare diamond of a lady
    Gary...for a great day....
and Ice man Andy - delighted you got in.....

First and last time I ever get called a lady  I agree with everything else you said though :D It's like a "Who's the biggest Pearl Jam Fan" competition sometimes; you can't enjoy the show unless they play songs only ever released to the ten club, on vinyl only in Japan. Was great to hear Brother, but the crowd didn't seem as fired up for that as they did for Alive/Even Flow et al.

For the guy who was complaining about guest spots ruining shows... how do you feel about Ed guesting for other bands? I have a recording of him doing "Man on the Moon" with REM, and a buttload of recordings of him playing with Crowded House/Neil Finn - are you saying that if you were at a Crowded House gig you'd be in the crowd saying "Piss off, Ed, I came here to see Neil sing, not you!" It just ads to the fun of a live show - they don't do it often, and I doubt bringing a mate up on stage to do a Bob Dylan cover is going to ruin Even Flow for you...

As for the comment about the Stones not releasing anything good in the last 30 years, that's just your opinion - there may have been Stones fans there who love the stuff they've released in the last 30 years (songs like Gimme Shelter, Brown Sugar, Wild Horses, Angie, and Start Me Up have all come out in the last 30 years)... sure their more recent stuff hasn't exactly topped the charts, but they're still legends. I'm sure there were people at the REM gig thinking when Ed walked out on stage "Piss off, Ed, you haven't released anything good since Vitalogy!"

If you didn't like the guest spot that's cool, not everyone does, but don't let it ruin your impression of a show that seemed like it would've been awesome to attend - one flat note in a 2 hour, 20 minute set isn't bad... and remember, a good 75% of fans at any given concert aren't hardcore fans like the people on the boards here are, so they probably feel the same way when the band busts out something they've never heard of before ("Wait, fuck WHO in the brain? Huh?") You can't please everyone all the time... give the hardcore fans a few rarities and new songs, give the casual fans Even Flow, Alive, and Better Man, and hope that after 2 1/2 hours everyone goes home happy 8-)
And I listen for the voice inside my head... nothing. I'll do this one myself.

Sweet mother of God, that was the best show ill see. Sound - Incredible. View - Incredible. Performance - Incredible. All the people i met - incredible.

2nd row, in front of Stone for the night. The sound mix was absolutely perfect where i was. The singalongs for some songs were spinetingling.

I brought my little brother (his first PJ gig), was queuing from about 2pm, but unfortunately wasnt mingling or that chatty cos i was knackered after the flight over!!

Then after hanging around for 2 hours after the show we met Ed at the barrier by the front of the venue, shake hands with him and tell him what we'd wanted to tell him: "that was fucking brilliant, thank you".

There were only a few of us at the barrier, me & brother, 2 scottish fellas...and then some "celeb hunter types" (who were pretty rude to Ed)...so it was really sound of him to make the effort to say hi and be so cool about it.

Now on to Berlin, safe in the knowledge that theres no way possible it will match that gig.

They did also say Aug 11th underneath the stick man. So a unique t-shirt like the Astoria one that had the date on the back at the bottom.

I got to the venue at 2.30pm with a ticket for the third tier. About 20 people in front of me and my friend. Saw Eddie when he came out to say hi to the fans, got a couple of photos over peoples heads but didnt get to shake his hand :)

Got inside and ran upstairs - got a seat right at the front of the balcony with a railing to lean on for the duration. We had 4 or 8 large speakers hung from cables in front of us, raised and about 10 metres away so we had the full effect of the sound.

Gig was awesome. I saw them at Cardiff in 2000 but I was so far away I enjoyed it but it was just a case of ticking them off the list of bands rather than really experiencing anything better or on a parralel with the way the music has affected me since the first time I listend to Ten in 1991.

The sound, the attitude of the band, the guests (im also a who fan and love the quadrophenia film the real me is featured in) and the song list. Just brilliant.
Was it the best gig I have ever been to? I saw the stones at twickernham, nin at brixton for the fragile tour.. but this was something else. Standing on the balcony with so many people singing the chorus to evenflow and alive to the point that eddie stopped singing and just listened to us.. thats special.

Happy customer :) Now I find myself wondering about getting to the o2 just for the hell of it
