All Concerts Should Be Lottery

After watching a number of bootlegs of shows in which seating was based upon seniority in the 10Club, I have come to the conclusion that all shows should be lottery based. I have seen too many songs where the front row just stands there. Must be a huge buzzkill. Look at me. I've been a fan since 94. This song sucks. Let me stand here. Fuck you. Give everybody a chance to be there. Let me sell it on Craigslist. If you're a real fan, you don't need to be right there. You just need to be there. If you get to be in the front that rocks.

Pearl Jam is about the energy they create. Giving those people who might never dream of being in front creates even more energy than those who are so used to being there. A lottery would mix it up. Instead of saying, "Hey man I've sat next to you at the past 10 concerts because of our number." It would be, "Hey, how did you get into Pearl Jam?" Call it the rantings of someone who would never get close to the front. Call it the ramblings of someone who doesn't care when you became a fan of Pearl Jam, just that you're a fan.

The lottery of the first two rows and the 8th and 9th doesn't cut it. Maybe if some people know they won't be sitting in the first five rows, they might open up some more tickets to those who just want to be there. To feel the energy. Not to be with those who take a piss when they hear a song they've already heard. To be with those who want to see the band. Who want to make their own connection with them and their fans.

I'll be sitting in the back, because that's where you feel the rush of the crowd. Not standing idly by at the barricade when they play songs that have meant so much to so many people.

Thanks for giving me a lesson on how to enjoy the band since you have been in the fan club since 2008 according to your profile. Good job but I've been in this thing for 11 years and I've paid my dues every year I deserve to sit closer than you. And people just don't stand there that are on the first row either, no one just stands there in the fan club. I have no idea what show you went to that was like that but I've seen them for years and never seen anyone just standing there watching the band.

The join date on the board doesn't really mean when you joined the 10C though, mine shows 2005, though I joined 1993 and when i lapsed I rejoined on 2000. The 2005 on my profile comes from when I created a second board name on the old board. :D

I agree it doesn't matter when you got in the 10c it doesn't mean your any less of a fan lottery is best for all. I mean think of the younger fans too they get shit seats because when pearl jam's first album dropped they were wiping placenta off of their face.

Seniority has nothing to do with who is the bigger fan... that's the way life rolls why should senior members get worse seats because someone else was born in 1992?

There is a lottery and newer members have a shot at sitting there, I think that's more than fair.

Agreed and I've had 2 shitty 10c numbers now. had I known what that 10c address on the last page of the cd booklets was all about after all these years I woulda had a good 10c#. That wouldn't have been bad for a 23 year old.

I'm in the fan club, and I stand there watching the band. That's just how I am. On the inside, I'm rocking hard out. So, it does happen. Doesn't mean we aren't enjoying it as much as the next guy. My front row centre experience is something I wouldn't trade for anything.

Great outlook on the whole thing... I seriously hope you hit it big on the Lottery.
    ...
Also... I have been in the Fan club since 1994 or 1995 and didn't get the front row til 2006... at a General Admission show. And I was standing next to people with fan club numbers in the 200,000 and 300,000 range. Of course, there was some sacrifice involved.
    So, anything is possible.

nobody is foaming at the mouth hun, there is a chance for people to get a good seat there are 4 rows available, its just that you want more and some of us disagree that seniority should be tossed aside because some think that it's unfair, as you pointed out earlier, it's a difference in opinion.

Agreed, I'm an older guy with a family now (46 years old now). I have seen about 26 shows over 18 years in 4 countries. I was there for one of their first shows (Woodsmen's Hall, Eugene, OR 1991). Been a fan since. Have gotten lucky getting tickets over the years, however, since I have only recently joined the 10C (sad, I know), I have found it difficult to score tickets to the upcoming shows -- again all this based on seniority. Lottery or some other way is neccessary. But what would this be??
    ...
Even so... you were still able to see them 26 times (i don't know how many without the assistance of the Fan Club), but you still got tickets, right? And people can STILL get tickets without being in the Fan Club.
What the Fan Club provides is an alternative to the traditional (TicketMonster) method of attaining tickets. It is a GREAT service that the Fan Club is not obligated to provide. Yet, look at the amount of grief they get... for providing a service they really don't need to provide.
Yeah... i know, people would drop out of the club if the ticket deal was gone and revenues would drop... i know that. But, what does that tell you about the fans that would do that? I mean, i would still pay... just because i love the band. I admit to originally joining the Club just so i could get tickets without the hassles of ChargeLine or TicketMaster outlets at the MusicPlus. But, if they were to drop the ticket thing today... I'd still pay. I like getting the singles and the newsletters and think they are worth the price.

I think more people would join if it goes to a full lottery system. People don't really want to join now because they have a very small chance of getting a good seat (myself included who forgot to renew, then wasn't going to join again but ended up doing it for the extra opportunity to score tickets).

10c has already stated EVERY show from now on WILL be lottery...for the 1, 2, 9 and 10th rows. i am MORE than satisfied with that. i have a mediocre # at best, and in large cities - such as NY, my hometown shows - i am always up on the sides.....and i am still more than satisfied with the current lottery system. i think it is the BESt balance of rewarding old and new fans alike.

also, the 'old' arguement is, well,....old. i know quite a lot of 10clubbers with pretty damn fine #s, and most are not 'old'...in fact, i am older than a lot of em. also, even amongst some of us 'older' fans, i don't think anyone would doubt what a GREAt time, and lots of energy....i.....and many, many others of my age group, have at a show. old or young, people express their enjoyment differently. so enough with that. i really think 10c/ph hit a home-run with this compromise within the seniority seating. win-win!

Much like freshman congressmen/women, people without much seniority shouldn't be allowed to question 10C seating policies or suggest changes.

i really wish you added a ;) to that post.

while i disagree with the OP, i have to say that suggestions made here, by newbie and senior fanclub members alike is how we've gotten a LOT of excellent changes to our membership perks....from the random row seating lottery, wristbands for posters, now presales for posters, etc. suggestions are GREAt things, no matter who they come from.

    :D

the current system is pretty cool and a nice compromise... first 2 rows is lottery and what else - rows 8-10?

you do anything more than that and youre gonna upset alot of people who have paid their dues for a long time... im not justifying it cause i have a great number or anything (311xxx) but it makes sense how it is right now... the band clearly wanted some kind of change in the first place to introduce the new lottery system for certain rows... that alone is enough to put my mind at ease... maybe its kindof a warning to those people with a sense of entitlement who dont rock the fuck out at every show... a few more rows might be added to the lottery pool if they dont have a little more fun :P

my fingers are crossed that i hit the jackpot for chicago 1 but if i dont i know ill still have pretty cool seats... and thats enough for me

the real key is networking and making friends with single 10C members with good numbers... then the system works to your advantage

Cause I'm sure none of the newbies will be standing there "idle". Do the lotto, just don't do it every time. Award the seniority peep their dues, though.

not only are the lottery rows affected, everyone is bumped a little bit. Rows 1 and 2 are moving back to 3 and 4 so the people that should be in 3 and 4 are moving back to 5 and 6... and so on. It affects a lot of people when you do the math.

-which is why I think it's fine the way it is. If your broaden the spectrum, you will displace more people. If you do that, you might as well get rid of the whole system.

The band doesn't have a problem with the ticketing, it's been the same way for a LONG time. Ed has commented on seeing the same people up front... their being RIGHT WHERE THEY BELONG.

Seniority is great for those who paid their dues. It's stated when you join the club that seniority is a factor. We all saw when we signed up. The lotto system is nice, I just don't believe it should be every show. Let those who have been in the fan club for ages get their seats. Tough shit, if you weren't born early enough. Life happens...
