You're talking about ticket prices right? Then I agree. :)

Actually, I agree with you anyhow.

I think it's really sad what they have become. For a comparison:

    2003
Pearl jam - MSG lower level seat - $39.50
Pearl jam - Spectrum lower level seat - $37
    Radiohead - MSG Pit - $49.50

    2008/2009
    Radiohead - Camden Pit - $59
    Pearl Jam - Camden 100 level seat - $68
    Pearl jam - Spectrum - $77
    Eddie Vedder - Tower theater - $68

So in 5 years, Radiohead has managed to only raise ticket prices only $10 and in the same span, Pearl jam has raised tickets almost $35 - $40? For those who make the argument that small tours = higher costs of lugging a stage and tour around... Radiohead are bringing their gear all the way from the UK plus they too play small, sporadic tours as well.

I don't like the ticket prices nor do I agree with them but they are able to sell out charging those prices so why wouldn't they charge them? They just have no business playing the sing Green Disease.

I know. Post 97 RH has become the filet if you are going to look at them like that.

Thats what I heard too, then I found out the hard way at Bonnaroo. Maybe they just had an off night, i dont know. But what I do know is that a good portion of the crowd left before the show was over. Thats how bad it was.

some people don't like them live because they don't sit and chat it up all night with the crowd. They do however put on an amazing show, they are all very talented and each play several different instruments during the show. They play some of the most complicated songs in rock perfectly live. Pearl Jam is a good live band too, but for different reasons. I never leave a PJ show thinking that I could never learn to play like Mike or Stone- Radiohead puts on a show where I'm amazed as to how those 5 guys can put out all of that sound with all of it's complexities
  • A couple different points of view:

    1. I have seen Bruce 20 times, and 2 more coming in October. With Ticketbastard charges his tickets come to $130. So I consider the $90 I just spent to see PJ ... to be cheap.

    2. Supply and Demand. And consider this, PJ does sell out their shows, but they sell for much more than face on Stub Hub, eBay, etc. So they are actually leaving money on the table. Some people are willing to pay far more for PJ tickets than what they charge for face value. So in some fashion they are actually charging less for the tickets than what Supply and Demand commands for them. Am I explaining this right?

Radiohead has outsold Pearl Jam since 2000, they are much more relevant and accepted than Pearl Jam. Pearl Jam is my favorite band, but let's not knock probably a top 5 band in today's current environment. Radiohead has sold more copies of In Rainbows and Hail to the Thief than Pearl Jam has of their last 2 without ever being on the radio and giving In Rainbows away for 6 months on their website.

This is completely off-topic, but I've never gotten Radiohead. I mean, I understand they are all amazing talents, and incredibly innovative and musical f'n geniuses .... their music just isn't what I'd call enjoyable. Somebody gave me OK Computer once, and listening to it was like homework.

I understand why people like them I guess (particularly pretentious people ;) ) ... I just don't get it.

I hated Radiohead for the longest time. I never understood it. I liked songs that had a clear chorus and all of that, but then I hear Airbag a couple of years ago, and started listening to other stuff and really liked it. There are some stuff that I can't get in to, but their good stuff is amazing and trumps anyone elses "good stuff" they have stuff that doesn't appeal to me at all, but their good stuff is why I listen
  • okay, i've just all of this thread and let me say i'm depressed now. i just find it all sad, really. i haven't appreciated the steep rise in PJ tix prices in the past few years, and to see it spelled out in front of me in cold hard numbers - one ticket practically doubling since 2003 - is just kinda disheartening. i guess what's so hard for so many of us is that when we got into PJ back in 92 or so and then the whole ticketmaster fight in the mid 90s became SO intertwined with how we as fans saw the band - hey, these guys are awesome and keep their prices low and fight for US! - then to have that all just go away in the past decade, it's just sad. as a realist, i know it's along time ago and i need to let it go. so on most days, i can do that, and i don't care much at all. there are more important aspects to life than what my favorite band charges for tix. but then on other days it's just hard, it's just b/c of the emotional investment i've made in the band for for the past 17 or so years. it's just hard, that's all. i just WISH they didn't charge so much now, i really do. but, they do, and that's life. i still love 'em and look forward to new music and tours from them. the ed shows were expensive, i thought, but i justified as a birthday present to myself (or, from my wife, even better!). we had a blast and now i don't even care what we paid. it was worth it. so i guess it's easier after you've seen the shows to not care so much about the cost.

Bruce's Tix for the Spectrum that go onsale Monday are $19.67 for nose bleeds, $68 and $101.

PJ's are $77 for every seat.

So unless you get great seats, you're paying less to see Bruce at the same venue.

They sell out shows in places like Philly and Seattle. They did not sell out Virginia Beach and Columbia last year. I don't know about DC, but there were definitely plenty of tickets to be had for that show as well. I didn't keep tabs on the other shows since I couldn't make it up north to see them. But yeah, not all PJ shows are just guaranteed sell-outs at these pricing levels for tickets.

It might just be wishful thinking, but it would be great to hear the band's perspective on this issue. I presume they'll be doing some press when Backspacer comes out, so I hope that there's somebody who at least brings it up.

While I personally don't have a problem with paying $70-$80 to see them, I can certainly appreciate the frustration amongst their longtime fans. Sure, they have every right to charge what the market will bear, but I as fans we have the same right to question the relative hypocrisy of such decisions. No matter which way you slice it, Pearl Jam used to position themselves as band band for whom fan accessibility was of paramount importance. Now, they still do lots of things for us that most bands don't, but they are definitely pricing some people out - especially many of their most loyal fans who now have other responsibilities (kids, mortgages, etc.) that they didn't have to worry about in the early to mid-nineties.

I know they don't owe me anything - but I would love to hear them at least address the issue.
